Why does everyone love FFVII?

I played it when I was younger, before it was mega popular. Didn't like it.
Played it now, like it even less.
I can't really understand how people say the battle system is deep, since after watching videos of the hardest bosses, I find it's just spamming Omni Slash and Knights of the Round over and over. Once you figure out how to make a move spamable, you're fucking done.

Story wise, it's not so bad, but the characters are iffy. Cloud and Sephiroth are boring as hell. Cid, Barret and Red 13 are the only party members I could stand.
Nappa and VegetaRude and Reno are cool at least.

Maybe I don't know exactly what you mean by this. I played FFXII and found the game to be completely enjoyable. Story, customization, battle system... what was broken?

I... did not enjoy it. I was able to ignore graphics enough to play it through all the way even though I was hating every moment of it (I was borrowing it and I have to finish it). The story was dull, the characters one dimensional, the combat was standard for the age so can't knock it for that, cutscenes were too long, materia system was broken, needed a strategy guide for some of it, sidequests were either pointless, not worth the effort, or barely alluded to which also required said strategy guide, the final boss fights were underwhelming, longer than it needed to be, you only used like 3 people the entire game, and extremely cliche.

The same reason people love half life 2 or halo or any other game. Some just find it fun, some like the story ect. Simply nostalgia or just personal taste, hell I tend to see more haters than fans really.
Haters have a tendency of being more vocal.
Well I have yet to find many of these rabid fans that people speak of. I know they are out there somewhere but they elude me. The fans i have met with are all moderate about it expressing enthusiasm without sounding like a fantard and making you to punch them. The haters on the other hand are more insufferable than the fans with their almost offensive banter over it and the ones that spout false claims. It disgusts me the most, hell that goes for haters of any game really for me.

I personally was late to the whole FF7 thing not playing it till years after it came out. While hearing much praise for it, I was never really phased about it as it did nothing more than intrigue me. So after playing it a good couple years after it's release with little expectations set by fans, I ended up enjoying it without the cloud of nostalgia and what not. I don;t see why one needs "nostalgia" to enjoy an old game or praise/appreciate it. Is it really hard to judge a game on it's own merits and come out enjoying something that while overhyped, is still good for a reason.

I meant the battle system of FFVII is totally customized without being broken. FFX and FFXII are totally customizable but get very broken (FFXII more quickly than FFX). That's all that that statement meant.

Just to take a random example;

World of Warcraft, try to find one soul in the wretched pool of haters who actually plays and enjoys the game. Mind you, there's over 11 million people that play the game on a fuck-if-I-know basis - And there's still more people bitching and whining about the game.

Lots love it, lots hate it, both balance eachother out in the end.

I know exactly what you mean. The only rabid fans I know of are the otakus that I knew going to high school.

I didn't play FF7 until 2001 when I finally bought a PlayStation. I remember going to Target w/ my mom after school and I saw the PSone w/ an LCD screen, so I bought it along w/ a memory card and copies FF7, ThunderForce V, MGS and Silhouette Mirage. As bitter as I was about Sony killing SEGA, it was not a purchase I regretted.

Later that year I bought an Xbox and eventually got JSRF and Panzer Dragoon Orta so I wasn't as bitter anymore.

This is exactly what I am talking about. I want to know if someone who had never known anything about it could still love the game. I for one think that a game is better if it is more fun to play. Plain and simple. I loved Metal Gear Solid 4, but not as much as Metal Gear Solid 3. 4 had its moments, sure, and it was a good game over all, but 3 was definitely better. Same goes for GTA: San Andreas compared to GTA4. San Andreas was a much better game.

Well, the only thing I didn't like was the graphics. The extraordinarily shoddy polygons were almost a step down from the Golden-Axe-era 3D. So that leaves the story, the characters, and the various gameplay systems.

The story is intensely loaded with bullshit and terrifyingly complex, with horrendous patches and plotholes. Most of the characters are a mix of stereotype, incredible anime unrealism, and just plain brooding unlikeability, and the combat system was as slow as ever, throwing frustratingly unintuitive magic out the window in favor of unimaginative, overly-specific abilities. Explainations were usually lacking, and official information was often erroneous.

The part I can praise is the materia system. It's fairly simple, and the lacking explainations and such mostly go here, but it has a rather nice feel to it, making customization possible again...with the option to break the system included.

This is coming from someone who liked it, too. I don't know why, but somewhere in this mess is a redeeming factor so great as to overpower all of these, which I just can't explain. Perhaps I liked the story, whatever it's flaws. Maybe the materia made up for the rest.

Or that, but the fact remains: I am a Final Fantasy 7 fan. You may just have to play the game to get it. Which is a shame, since even I can hardly look at it without my eyes bleeding.

This thread seems familiar...as if i've already seen it somewhere else...

Deja vu? Maybe?
If it was anywhere else, I am sorry. I figured someone might have posted it, so I looked in the search bar for combination of FFVII, Final Fantasy 7, and Final Fantasy VII looking for a previous post so I wouldn't repeat it... if it is a repeat though, I again apologize.

Actually, it's becoming more popular to hate Final Fantasy 7. Kinda ironic.
Yeah, I got a much more negative response then I expected... though it still doesn't explain why it still wins almost every "best game ever" contest.

Nowadays if I had a choice to play Halo/Killzone or FF7, I would take 7 just because I remember it being my first true JRPG (first RPG for me was Pokemon). I spent years with that game

The reason I like final fantasy 7 is because:

A. The storyline is interesting, and like any other good story/book/movie/game, I like to go back and go through it again.
B. The game has a lot of things to keep me busy, and the materia aspect is fun to level.
C. There are very difficult bosses called "weapons" that are optional, and more powerful than the final boss, and worth playing through a second time to try and kill them.
D. Since there is so much content and secret items to get, you won't get anything the first time through, so you'll want to play it again to get everything.

Now, I don't think its the GREATEST game of all time, but it is really fun to play more than once. And I don't mind the graphics. A good game is a good game despite whatever graphics it may have.

well it's a good game with a good conecting story, and memorable characters. I liked it because it took everything I loved about FF (an easy to learn lvling system, an easy way too upgrade characters, a deep story though admitbaly sometimes confusing, a large world that could be expanded later after the game, the basics of the battle system) and gave it a nice steam punk look and feel to it. so to sum it all up they took everything I loved about FF and refined it to give it a new style and feel that alot of games even today can't match up to besides it has the nostalgia factor to it... oh and it probably would have been better if it had voice acting even though the ps1 probably couldn't handle it if it had been the first FF game with voice acting I fear it would be worse than FFX voice acting which is pretty hard to pull off...
