I was waiting on a moment. But the moment never came.
All the billion other moments. Were just slipping all away.

Then I finally got Vincent in my party.

:D

The reason is simple.

Toss boobs, AUWSUM ANIME CHARUCTERS, and flimsy story about "The Man" and his dickish nature and people will eat it up.

I guess it all comes down to taste. In this thread some people say they love the characters, some say they are one dimensional... some say the story is flimsy, some say it's epic... some like the gameplay, some say it's just a turn based borefest. I do realize that everything really comes down to taste, and expected no less from this... guess I was just hoping something would strike me as the real reason people love it. Guess I won't find out until they do a remake.

The 1st smart answer: All the people who took the polls were nostalgia addicted Jrpg fans and this was the first game they remember playing when they got the PS1

the second smart answer: this

The same reason people love half life 2 or halo or any other game. Some just find it fun, some like the story ect. Simply nostalgia or just personal taste.
my answer: It was a good game when it came out and still is for the turn based/jrpg fans (like my self)

I personally think that Final Fantasy bought jrpg's to the masses. I had never EVER played an rpg until Final fantasy vii, and no matter how much hate it gets, it did so many things right. The ATB's, the Summons, the plethora of weapons and upgrades. Kinda similar to why WoW did so well, bringing mmo's to the masses - easy, simple, and not easy to put down.

Personally, I like the pre-rendered backgrounds from an artistic perspective, although their Popeye arms have always struck me as kind of weird. Anyway, in terms of music, character development, environment, and humor, FFVII has won my spot of favorite game. However, to place an example, my old assistant manager loved FFVIII, and when we would discuss any kind of game, I would always be talking in terms of story and character development (I'm a slave to good writing), and he would always talk about gameplay (which I admit FFVII doesn't have the most innovative, but I did like the materia system), and it was a lot like we were having separate conversations.

As to the haters, well, they're entitled to their opinion, but only so long as they've actually played it. A lot of people hate Naruto because it's popular, but have only watched maybe an episode. It's cool to hate the mainstream, you know?

....Oh, and by the way, I hate Naruto. But I did try reading the manga and even tried watching the first season in Japanese. And I also hate FFX, and played the whole thing. If you're going to hate, at least try BEFORE you've made your decision.

So of course, it will always be a matter of opinion, and FFVII, personally, excelled in an RPG where many others had failed. Dissidia: Final Fantasy, anyone? :p

For females - Him [http://media.adventchildren.net/wallpapers/site/ac_sephiroth_1024.jpg]
Oh, I hate to double-post, but somehow, I'd neglected this entry. I dunno guys, I'm a lady, and I think Tifa is a hella lot sexier than Sephiroth. Biggest polygons I've ever seen.

FFVII is a very good game, was incredibly well done, and the story was rather engaging. By today's standards it's not that good, but it was made something like 10 years ago, so that's to be expected.

I think the biggest reason it's as popular as it is is that the "current generation" of gamers had it as their first "Best. Game. Evar." and due to nostalgia and the rose-tint effect, it's become something of a holy grail to them. Same thing with OoT and the like.

Sort of the point I was going for: Okay, by today's standards, they're primitive looking, but when they first came out this had never been done before.
Yup. I remember playing FFVII the first time through, and I couldn't imagine graphics better than the cinematics in that game.

It was also the first RPG I ever played, which gives it a huge gold star in my book.

I for one think that a game is better if it is more fun to play. Plain and simple. I loved Metal Gear Solid 4, but not as much as Metal Gear Solid 3. 4 had its moments, sure, and it was a good game over all, but 3 was definitely better. Same goes for GTA: San Andreas compared to GTA4. San Andreas was a much better game.
100% agee. I beat MGS3 over 20 times at least and enjoyed it everytime. I beat GTA:SA only twice, but I quit playing GTA4 before beating it once.

I played FF8 before 7, liked 8 a bit, but hated 7. Then all things anime and JRPGish started making me sick, just like the samey FPS genre of today is starting to.

I played Final Fantasy 9 before i picked up 7. And guess which one I prefer...

Maybe it had something to do with the first true RPG you pick up being your favourite?

But as a kid when i first played FF VII i must admit the story was hard to follow,
but at the time, the in game graphics and cinematics were second to none, the music score was brilliant although, when I listen to it now, I feel it is out dated.

Nothing wrong with some remixed/remade songs to fix that though.

The ongoing conflict between cloud and sephiroth was always a hook for me, got me engaged in the story.

One thing that does put me off RPG's in general, not just FF VII is that all the characters in battle are almost the same. I mean attacks they can learn/use other than their limit breaks or special moves.

I suppose FF VII isn't the worse offender, allowing you to asign different materia to different characters.

put it this way, any PS1 owners.

what games do you remember from PS1? i remember FF7, FF8 and that's about it... sport games get replaced and forgotten every couple of years, games without a story don't stick in your mind.

the only PS1 game i'd ever consider playing again, is FF7.

the story is epic, the gameplay is epic (although way too easy if you've played it before), the size/scale is epic. the story vs game progression makes a hell of a lot more sense than other games.

most story driven games have a story which could be effectively summarized into a few words, however FF7 has one of the most complex stories ever seen in a game (only the other FF games come close from my experience).

FF7 is memorable. nothing of current generation is memorable for me, for example bioshock and GTA4 are as memorable as a good action flick, but i'll forget about them in a few years.

Nostalgia. Everyone is just hooked on nostalgia so if anyone that doesn't have the nostalgia from playing it when it was passable plays, they can't stand it. Meanwhile everyone with the nostalgia can't get over it and vote it the best game EVAH! dspite it being dated.

I liked it, still like it and still can play it from time to time. It was the first game I played of that style and was pretty much a gateway title for me into JRPGS. Granted I played FFVI after that and thought it a far superior game, in terms of story, characters etc, but FFVII was the game that started it all for me.

Graphics doesn't make a game good, it's the complex and twisted story, the combat and the eventual mini-games, the great soundtrack (if you're into that stuff, and the characters are cool (if you like those kind of characters). I think most people are spoiled by current day graphics, and focus on gameplay more than hearing a good story. And while the latter is certainly acceptable sometimes, you should respect games that puts the story first.

Final Fantasy 8 was better in my opinion, but 7 was still pretty good.

What annoys me though is that Legend of Dragoon was shunned by the general public because it was apparently 'a FF7 knock-off', but the truth is that it was far better.
