Well, taking one of the few female characters in gaming and making her male is much worse than making a male female. Though, I don't think many people actually want actual characters, with personalities, to be gender bent. Just make a new character or new game in that case. Link is special, though. He's just a blank slate for the player to project on to. His gender doesn't matter. Which is part of the reason why it matters, I guess. I'm sure most people that want a Linkle would be more than satisfied with a playable Zelda, though.
I've never viewed him as a blank slate.
If they were to make link a female I would expect a lot more of the nonsensical "sexism" rants because of what Link goes through. Especially with talks about toxic masculinity. Since there's a lot of objectivity that revolves around male oriented labor than there is anything that can be tied much to femininity. Link doesn't travel and takes the nuns path to end conflict.
Fishing, lifting, killing, gathering, taming, espionage, and exploration. We can probably give instruments playing and horseback riding a pass but outside of that I don't see much that's gonna really make a crowd-pleaser here. Since just making a female link isn't an end all solution here.
Since if we take the places that require water and wetness physics are applied we would here nothing but how fem Link is sexualized.
The many monsters that tend to grab, grope, and choke. We would nothing but bs about rape and fantasy. Even though no one really makes a fuss about Gerudo Valley. Which if we had an entirely gender swapped game...I expect the media to be up in arms about a "rape" city of women that is Gerudo Valley.
If anything Hyrule Warrior was the benchmark that help set this in motion. We get 14 playable female characters and not a single praise. While the game has 12 males and 1 animal. As well where other games have caved to such "desires" and have been demonized more over them than been given gratitude for capitulating.
