(No fancy format because this contains my personal opinions as well as reports)

I understand some of you have respective consoles that you sympathise with. However I request that you leave heavy bias at the door for this one if we are going to discuss. Yes, your console is awesome, but who wins and who 'loses' this generation doesn't affect your console per se. Let's just look at the state of the generation and talk about it.

I agree with what he says. Sony has a far stronger catalog of games coming for it. I think the race will be much closer in a years time.

Nintendo though have said quite often that they dont plan on releasing a HD Wii.

But any claim will seem crazy if you say it now. Look back a few years when the PS3 lineup was quite pathetic, most analysts said the console is dead.. Now that they have a few good titles under their belt everyone making new opinions and the people with the old fashioned thinking are making out they are idiots.

Japans market has a lot of potential because once you break that market MS will get a lot more popular releases on their console which will help their sales across the globe. European and American developers have no problems with multiplatform games. Japanese developers are very loyal to Japanese companies as are Japanese consumers.

I dunno the 360 is actually fairly succesful in Japan but naturally sony and nintendo are going to better in that region.

Personally I see the console war as not who sells the most games/systems but the company who makes the most profit from that system it would not supprise me to see the Wii making more money than their competitors combined considering half of the top ten selling games every month seem to be on the Wii, plus selling more systems without ever having to subsidies the price and certainly didn't spend the sames ammounts in R&D

Pachter is absolutely, positively, out of touch with 'core' gamers. All I have to bring up to back that statement up is his announcement that Twitter and Last.FM were the two biggest reveals at E3.

The absurdity of it. Twitter is an absolute bomb with people my generation (18-25), the generation it is SUPPOSED to be targetting and is only really used by little girls, some celebrities, and organizations/companies (news, gaming, etc). It's such a redundant and useless thing. Nobody wants it, nobody really uses it, yet, it's being casually forced upon people.

He's also wrong about Wii-HD. It won't happen soon. It will happen at the end of this generation (3-5 years) as a way to improve the life span of the Wii a bit so they can come in next-gen with a full blown 1080p, 1:1 motion detection controller with a 1:1 motion detection camera and flawless voice recognition and wipe up the competitors without a problem while Sony and Microsoft play catch up with what happened last-gen.

For this prediction I feel he's right, but for the wrong reasons. Natal, when used for console, is designed to give the 360 legs. It's also designed to cut some of Nintendo's market share. While it'll cut a small amount, it won't be significant enough. This lack of legs will be the down fall.

Sony will place second simply because of the merits of Bluray. That's all there really is to that. There's nothing particularly special or outstanding about the PS3 other than that. It's your average system, just like the 360 is.

You also have to remember that even if Sony loses this gen, and by a large margin, they still WON this 'gen' due to bluray. Massive royalties being rolled in from that. Massive.

Exactly. The more bluray players they get out there the better it is for them. Sony has become far more aggressive in the last year and are making a real push on their console.

I dont think Natal or Sonys Motion will take much of the Wii base at all. I dont imagine many people will rush out and invest in a 360/PS3 to play a few minigames. Nintendo has a huge lead in games and variety.. Although the tech is impressive I cant see it catching on at all.

Twitter and Last.fm wernt great updates for the 360. Maybe its just me but I dont see how Twitter would be effective on the 360 at all. Youd still need your PC to get your pictures and upload them and the 360 doesnt have a good keyboard. 99% of Twitter users will stick to the PC im afraid. If you can listen to Last.fm while ingame that will be a welcome update.

You have to think to yourself if you really will see a HD version of the Wii to extend shelf life. Like I said before, HD compatible Wii to me doesn't look like it will serve much purpose. If developers half ass titles visually they will look worse in a higher output, people seem to believe that 'HD' means 'everything instantly looks better, which isn't true. Titles like Rogue Leader on the Cube, and a few titles would look better, but not everything. The devs would have to put more effort in if a higher output is demanded, which I guess is a good thing.

Also next generation I don't believe there will be an update, I think they will bring out new tech altogether. I mean for the last decade apparently Miyamoto and Iwata were harping on about this tech where you would move a robot with your mind. It makes me think that they have more interesting things in store for the next generation.

For this prediction I feel he's right, but for the wrong reasons. Natal, when used for console, is designed to give the 360 legs. It's also designed to cut some of Nintendo's market share. While it'll cut a small amount, it won't be significant enough. This lack of legs will be the down fall.
True, but it seems it's also to give the 360 a ten year lifespan like the PS3 is aiming for. Natal can probably do this, because the tech is completely different. I think it seems to be a case of undercutting Nintendo and lasting ten years, because I don't see the 360 coming second either, market saturation has to hit that thing eventually.

Sony will place second simply because of the merits of Bluray. That's all there really is to that. There's nothing particularly special or outstanding about the PS3 other than that. It's your average system, just like the 360 is.
Exactly. Once it becomes a bigger factor in the industry, it will gain significant market share. But that's the part where I read it and thought 'no shit'.

You also have to remember that even if Sony loses this gen, and by a large margin, they still WON this 'gen' due to bluray. Massive royalties being rolled in from that. Massive.
True in a sense. As for the next generation, it's a case of if competitors want to create new formats or not. Nintendo did last generation, but I don't think it paid off so well in a sense.
