Why does (seemingly) everyone hate this game and especially this guy?

I'm kinda new to the franchise (I'm playing FFX, FFXIII, and KH all at once because I need to cram). He doesn't really bother me. So, what's up?

Edit: This is Hope Estheim from Final Fantasy XIII. And yes, he is male.

Edit II: I didn't realize all of the hate for this game as a whole either. O_O

Anyway, judging by his appearance and the fact that he's in a Final Fantasy game, I'm going to go ahead and assume he's a whiny kid emo character. If that's the case (and I could be wrong), then what's not to hate?

His name is Hope, he's the whiny kid in ff13, except this one has 13% more whiny, he's not consistent at all, crying for almost the entire game and still throwing a fucking boomerang around. He's also a ridiculously weak character for the first 25% of the game, having almost no health at all.

That is Hope, from Final Fantasy 13. He's a whiny little mama's boy who is completely unlikable if you ask me. And he's a useless a character a Final Fantasy has gotten since Edward from 4. At least Edward had a redeeming character, this sprat is just annoying. But, he's not as bad as Vanille at least. AND WHO NAMES A BOY "HOPE"?

I know why he complains all the time. Had the writing been better, he would even be a sympathetic character. Unfortunately, it isn't. He just comes off as a whiny, selfish dick.

Think of Luke Skywalker from New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. Combine that with Anakin Skywalker from all 3 of the prequels. Now multiply that by 2, and that's how whiney and annoying Hope is. He's just a complete waste of breath. Fuck that guy.

Less a problem with him, more a overall problem with FF 13's characters. They have the problem of they don't actually to to each other they talk at each other using loosely relevant dramatic statements. Plus they are all very badly characterized and unrelateable

Hope is a whiner but he probably gets over being a whiner further in the story. (I'm guessing most people didn't play FF XIII long enough to know this because IT WAS TOO LINEAR AND REPETATIVE!)
