Why does (seemingly) everyone hate this game and especially this guy?

BLASPHEMER!

I agree with Norris IV, none of the characters seemed to have actual conversations with each other. It was more like they were taking turns spouting expository dialogues on war and freedom. Hope just stands out as the worst of all of them because his weapon sucks, he spends a great deal of time whining and dragging the team down and generally throwing hissy fits over Snow.

Vanille could be mai waifu. I liked the maternal role she seemed to take with the group, as cliche as it may have been.

Well, not having played the game, from looking at him, one guess of mine would be that he's a character who was mainly designed to appeal to the Japanese audience. He's got all the characteristics of the view of an "attractive" Japanese male today: light-colored swooshy hair, baby face, serious yet innocent expression, gazing eyes, thin as a twig. It goes without saying that what will appeal to one culture may be completely unappealing to another, and it is no surprise to me at all that this character, from that alone, bombed in the West. Just like every similarly designed character from FF after Cloud Strife in 7. Cloud's design was new to Western gamers, and interesting in that regard. After Cloud, though, the standard for male characters who are obviously male in Asia but androgynous-looking in the West was set, and male JRPG protagonists have had to try to recover from that view ever since.

I'm not gonna comment on his personality, as I need to play the game to do that. But yeah, he doesn't look to me like the kind of character I would enjoy playing.

EDIT: As for the game, my first hypothesis is one word: Yahtzee. It seems that lately people are starting to take ZP seriously as a game review. And it was panned by a lot of other critics too, so there's that. But I have not played the game, nor will I ever probably play it, so I'm just spouting off uninformed opinion here. Move along.

I hate him because he becoming extremely annoying later in the game.

At first I kinda liked him, he had a good reason to be all moppy and sad, I mean, his mother died and he blames Snow for it, and all he wants is to kill the guy. I can totally get that, the dude wants revenge. AND THEN, when that whole deal gets resolved he becomes a whole other kind of annoying.

He's whiny and complains far too much, I know he's now wanted, but there comes a point where you just deal with it and stop bitching about it. Then when he finally gets his own Eidolon he somehow gets just down right more obnoxious. Everything that comes out of his mouth has to deal with hope and cheerleading, and it's just weird hearing it from him, it's like he has schizophrenia and can't pick a damn emotion and stick with it.

That's why I hate him anyways, just my two cents.

I didnt realise that he was a male... is this person the same person that's on the box art?
because if thats the case, im afraid our definitions of what a male is are probably different

Anyyyyway... ive never played a FF game, so i cant say i personally say the franchise is bad, but ive never really like JRPGs or turn based combat (except for pokemon).... so thats pretty much why i've never given it a go

If a friend were to lend me a copy then sure i'd give it a go.. i might even be surprised and end up liking it.. but i wouldnt actually want to pay for it

How do you get maternal out of Vanille? Either Fang or Sazh was holding her hand the time before the whole group merged. She was kind of only involved in the whole thing by chance and her bubbly voice and personality pissed me off the most. As for Hope, his sucky weapon didnt mean much cuz he was a decent spell caster and probably my best medic.

Hope doesn't really bother me. Low HP but whatever. Actually, Vanille's constant high pitched sex noises are the most bothersome.

Minor early XIII spoilers.

He's an idiot. His justification for trying to kill Snow is one of the most stupid things I have come across. "Soldiers killed my mum, LETS KILLS SNOW INSTEAD OF THE SOLDIERS RESPONSIBLE FOR HER DEATH." If it wasn't for Snow and his friends then they both would be dead. The only one that is at fault is the soldiers that tried to kill them in the first place. Hope just should have been happy that he was alive and that Snow actually bothered to save his stupid ass and unfortunately was unable to save his mum. NOT HIS FAULT THOUGH, SHE'D BE DEAD ANYWAY.

10 hours in XIII spoilers.

Fortunately he gets a developing brain that he probably stole from a baby about 10 hours into the game and in doing so he got a bit of common sense and stopped going after Snow after realizing how stupid he is.

That about sums it up.

EDIT: I agree, Vanille is worse (which maybe hard to believe reading the above paragraphs but it's true. She doesn't start developing a brain until about 50 hours in.

EDIT: I don't get how it's that hard to tell that he's a guy. I mean, it's pretty obvious, he's no where near feminine enough to be a girl. Unless it was a more (MUCH MORE) masculine girl. His face really gives it away.

Wait, we're talking about the game now too? 'Cause I'm okay with the game. Not too fond of the plot or writing (been spoiled by all the good JRPG studios), but the paradigm shift combat is very solid.

I actually liked Lightning, Vanille and Fang much, much more than Sazh, Hope or Snow. Sazh is boring (I get why that appeals to boring people), Hope is (as noted) whiny and Snow is such an annoying fucking bastard that my heart soared every time Lightning punched him in his stupid fucking face.

Anyway. Hope was the set-up to a joke (or just fanservice) that never arrived. What joke? Well, if this game had a sense of humor he would've crossdressed at some point to infiltrate a castle or trick a guard. You disappoint me, Square.

Hope bothered me because he never ponied up when the situation called for it. Not until the very end, anyway. Now, I understand why he's upset, and why he blames Snow, but his character is so whiny (the entire world is falling apart around you kid, pull it together) that he is simply tainted too much in my view by the time he grows up. I understand that every Final Fantasy game needs to have an immature/whiny character (Yuffie, Zell, Vivi, Wakka, Vaan), but Hope is abusing the role.

I know. He never came across as feminine to me. He may be kind of a "pretty boy" but I would never think he was a girl.

Because of all the bloody whining. He's the character you meant to emotionally attach to the most, but that doesn't work if you just want to twat him every time he opens his mouth.

I would've said Eiko was the whiny character of FF IX, but maybe that's because I love Vivi so much.
OT Hope... hope my boy you were the first warning light that FF XIII might not be great. Vanille, you were the second. But Hope, seriously Hope, for the sparse 10 or so hours I played of FF XIII was filled with nothing but your moping and generally dragging my team down. I let you away with your stupid boomerang because Vanille outclasses you in the spaztastic weapon design, seriously it's like some sort of fold-away yo-yo staff.

Deary me it does seem like you've started playing Final Fantasy at the worst point (well in my opinion anyway) after FF10, or more specifically after the company ceased to be squaresoft and became square enix, Final fantasy as a series didn't just start going downhill it rolled downhill so fast you'd have though it was the last day at the january sales at a shop that was at the bottom.

But yes back on topic, this kid is hated widely because of his whiney-ness, pretty much everyone else has said this, ontop of it pretty much all the main characters are quite frankly horribly characterised, there is no point in the game where I actually cared at all about any of them, other than sazh, but he just oozes cool and has a baby chocobo in his hair :D

Honestly go back to the slightly older games, FF7, FF9, they're two of the defining games people remember final fantasy for and are in my opinion much better in every respect than FF10-2 onwards

FFXIII breaks a lot of good things seen in the previous games.
simply said. Turn Based combat works when you have control of a group as you can control tactics and strategy. (... Every Final Fantasy up until X)

Real Time combat works when you have control over an individual so you can do combos and time based hits (Radiance of Radiata/kingdom hearts)

FFXIII is a turn based individual combat system with real time consquencies... in other words it takes the worst of both worlds and combines it into one.

Hope...
He is just Annoying as sin.
some of the lines that he spouts just makes you want to punch him in the face... repeatably... until he stops breathing.

even the reasons for him holding his grudge and hatred towards other individuals doesn't make sense, and he never really is ever to grasp the gravity of many of the situations he is in...
