Why does (seemingly) everyone hate this game and especially this guy?

Oh God, that little prick. Out of all the terrible characters in Final Fantasy 13 (and there were a lot) he was probably the most annoying. Maybe Vanille, too, but only because her voice acting annoyed the hell out of me. The kid is just a whiny little bastard, and he is one of the several reasons I never bothered to finish the game.

I'm kinda new to the franchise (I'm playing FFX, FFXIII, and KH all at once because I need to cram). He doesn't really bother me. So, what's up?

Edit: This is Hope Estheim from Final Fantasy XIII. And yes, he is male.

Edit II: I didn't realize all of the hate for this game as a whole either. O_O
Number 1 reason FFXIII is one of the worst in the series: It is a tutorial for 90% of the game. It holds your hand and forces you down a specific linear path. Other FF games allowed a bit more freedom of movement via a World Map (with the exception of FFX). More annoying than anything I can think of is a tutorial that lasts 15+ hours (depending on the speed at which you progress).

Number 2 reason: Hope and Vanille. Both very annoying characters, also in the case of Hope useless as hell.

Number 3 reason: armor/weapon/synthesis system was overly complicated and generally stupid. Previous games were at least more intuitive and had a better range of weaponry to choose from/buy.

Number 4 reason: NPC's and the world itself were more or less lifeless as hell. In other Final Fantasy's you felt as if you were a part of a living world. This one seemed to be (aside from cutscenes) devoid of life outside of monsters to fight.

Other things: no real option for grinding characters up. Pretty much every character in the game is personality deficient in some respect. The only saving grace is the battle system, which is quite fun until you summon something. The summons more or less are such a deviation from the previous series that it feels almost forced and too much like a mini-game rather than a battle-system feature.

Back to Hope, he's the epitome of the tween angst that a lot of older FF fans seem to dislike VERY much and love to hate on.

Overall for the fans of the series, 12 and 13 both have been massive disappointments.

Because he is a depressive, whiny little brat... I hate him...

In almost every cut scene he falls to his knees and cries, it's irritating. At the start of the game his mother was killed because she volunteered to fight in a battle, the leader (Snow) who was well 'leading' the group couldn't save her in time.

So this little douche spends around half the game complaining that it was Snow's fault, even though he tried everything he could do to save her and it was her idea to volunteer in the first place...

Hope (the little douche) probably could of saved her himself in the battle, but instead of volunteering alongside his mother he sits on his knees crying (something he does hundreds of times in the game) whilst she goes into battle...

So all in all, he's an irritating character who if I was given the choice to throw into a pool of sharks I would do so with absolutely no hesitation, I actually ended skipping some scenes with him in it because he just starts whining...

GOD I HATE HOPE...

Rant over...

Remember rainbow road from mario kart? Well imagine driving down rainbow road, but it is completely straight, and slow, and its a never ending race, and there are two annoying kids in your ear constantly sucking, and the worst story ever makes you hate every character. I mean yeah its pretty but sooner or later all that prettyness fades and you want to just beat yourself over the head with a meat tenderizer.

TLDR
This game is equivalent through putting your head through a very linear, but pretty, woodchipper with two annoying kids crying in the background.

I love this game and all the characters.

Yeah. I said it. People are going to hate me for saying it but I do. I love this game.

Hope was designed to be a whiny *****. It emphasizes his coming of age during the story.

Vanille was designed peppy and kind of annoying. She's hiding a lot of regret and emotions behind her facade.

And people can shut up about the combat system. it works and allows a lot of strategy. And it's better than fucking 12's.

Because he starts as a whiny little ***** who needs a good backhand. He then grows up a bit and becomes...a whiny little ***** who needs a good backhand. Aside from him I like the game.

Me too.
OT: Hope. Hope is.....well lemme put it like this. He's a whiny little ***** who is unsure in everything he does(very rarely does he show resolve). That all being said, he was just a normal kid up until he watched his mother die(fall to her death) before his eyes and had to travel with the man he thought responsible for it. I really don't blame his character for being that way. What you you be like if suddenly all the stuff that happens in a FF game was forced upon you? Probably rather similar. So I didn't hate hope. No, it was Vanille that ruined it for me.

thats actually pretty simple. he just isnt an attractive character. hope is just a character that doesn't make you care. he is a big ball of nothing and when they put his mother's death as his motivation, it leaves most people wishing that hope died and not the mother. i mean i liked her i wouldnt mind if they stuck with the name hope and made her son the throw away character

I don't hate this game or Hope. I think the game has an original story and unique combat system. To be fair too, I feel that Hope is kind of whiny at times but he's not an adult and is suffering from trauma so I can't expect much from him. His behavior seems the most realistic to out of all the characters.

The main issue with FF13 is the stupidly heavy handed linearity and lack of actual strategy to the fights, though I did quite enjoy the battle system still, despite this.

The main problem with Hope is he's poorly written. I can understand why he's whiny and upset a lot, but unlike a real person he neither gets over it or has any kind of proper breakdown. He just gets whinier and whinier until like 30 hours into the game when he finally cheers up a touch. And even then, it ain't much.

So yeah. Personally, I would have had Hope have a good old fashioned psychotic break 2 hours into the game, then had him recover a bit later.

EDIT: Also the ridiculously complicated and grindy upgrade system for weapons and armour can fuck off :/

Well, people hate the game because its not what they were expecting from it. A lot of people didn't exactly like the changes; mainly the battle system and the world being pretty linear.

As for Hope, I have no idea. I thought that out of all the characters, he was the best one. Had excellent character development, was good in the medic/ravenger roles, the only negative point would be that even in some CGI scenes, he looks like a girl. Seriously, I think people only hate Hope because he whines a lot. But that made logical sense to me. He is the youngest member of the party at only 14 or so. Plus, he isn't exactly the most expressive teen to begin with. I think people just forget that he's a kid. Not some older teen going into an adult, a kid. Again, I feel like he just had the best character development. NEVER understood the hate.

Course, maybe people just project the hate for the game onto the most easily hated character they could see first, which was Hope. Sad, because he does get better later on.

Still, good game and very good character in my opinion.

Well, it was a terrible game with terrible writing, which also explains the hatred for him.

I don't know who the hell he is, but that face looks like it needs a good, hard punch.

Its just one of those faces, square would fare better if they stopped using that template for every single damn character they make.
