Why does (seemingly) everyone hate this game and especially this guy?

Because Square Enix makes likable characters like my washing machine makes ice sculptures.

Because he is a depressive, whiny little brat... I hate him...

In almost every cut scene he falls to his knees and cries, it's irritating. At the start of the game his mother was killed because she volunteered to fight in a battle, the leader (Snow) who was well 'leading' the group couldn't save her in time.

So this little douche spends around half the game complaining that it was Snow's fault, even though he tried everything he could do to save her and it was her idea to volunteer in the first place...

Hope (the little douche) probably could of saved her himself in the battle, but instead of volunteering alongside his mother he sits on his knees crying (something he does hundreds of times in the game) whilst she goes into battle...

So all in all, he's an irritating character who if I was given the choice to throw into a pool of sharks I would do so with absolutely no hesitation, I actually ended skipping some scenes with him in it because he just starts whining...

GOD I HATE HOPE...

Rant over...
Isn't he 14 years old? When you were 14 were you ready to pick up an assualt rifle and head into a warzone. Sure he whines a lot but he's still a kid. To be honest I think the mother was kind of an idiot, her priority should have been taking care of her son, not heading into battle.

I liked him quite a bit when I thought he was going to kill Snow. But then he didn't. I will never forgive him.

Really, I have no big issue with him. The kid is like, what, 14? He just saw his mother killed in a war and was just told he has to destroy the world or else he'll become a monster trapped in his own mutilated body for who-knows-how-long. I'd be pretty damn whiny and scared too. Hell, at least he has the balls to man up and try to follow Lightning, a soldier, and try to learn how to fight so he can get revenge. That's a hell of a lot braver than I'd expect most people to be outside of a game setting.

Really, I think a lot of people, at 14 years old, would have just sat and cried and whined if they saw their mother die. At least he gets off his ass to at least try to fight. He mans up a lot more than I think most people would. People seem to forget things like realistic reactions when viewing some characters.

Still, his lack of HP sucks.

You Killed my Mommy wah wah...I hate him because he is a whiny tool. I hate the game because it isn't one. Just an over-bloated cutscene with a turn based minigame in between (Yeah I only like JRPG's if they have good combat).

P.S I've played FF-XIII to 100% achievement completion so I think I'm entitled to say I tried it. Also I swear the translator must have died laughing when he found out the characters name was "Hope".

Because he is easily the whinest character I've ever encountered in a video game. A little whining would be understandable in his situation, you know his mom dies, most of the planet wants to kill him, he has to keep his boomerang stored up his ass (Seriously, he doesn't have any sort of pouch or anything, it literally looks like he's pulling it out of his ASS), I'd probably whine to. But he just, never, stops, and after a while is gets more then a little grating.

its been said, but he is so fucking whiney, and not even about something that makes sense, since snow wasnt at all to blame. i get that he was trying to place blame on someone else so he wouldnt have to deal with the pain, but he just never shuts up about it

I especially despise Hope due to the way he speaks. He constantly mumbles, gasps, wheezes and makes little nonsense noises for no reason. Half his lines are nothing but "em" or "aaah" or nothing but a wheezing, gasping, spluttering sound. I'm noticing this more and more in Japanese games - the characters will often make little gasping/spluttering/sighing noises for no reason. Vanille does this a lot too. You know what I mean - it's the "oohs", "uhhhs?" "ah" and the hems and haws and the short noises they make whenever anyone says anything or whenever they see anything. They don't ACTUALLY say anything, they just open their mouth and make a little noise then shut it promptly. Watch any FFXIII cinematic of hope and you'll know what I mean.

Hope also whines a lot. He gets better later on, but too little, too late.

I like Hope. I can always get behind the attempted face stabbing of the obnoxious frat dude character. I was screaming yes when Hope was about to do it.

My word. I happen to like the game but don't EVER see that happening for me.

Now, I've never been a fan of Final Fantasy because I've always lacked the right system to play the series on. I did manage to play FF9 for about 2 hours and I quite liked it. That's my only prior experience to the series.

About a year ago, my friend got FF13 when it came out. One day, I asked him if it was any good. He handed me the controller to his PS3 and said I could try it out myself.

The result? I have NEVER felt less involved with a video game than I have with FF13. I'm serious: I felt like each combat encounter played itself, like the game really didn't care what I thought should happen in battle.

Also, I really disliked the gameplay to cutscene ratio. This is coming from someone who played through Metal Gear Solid 4 TWICE (without skipping cutscenes).

As for the characters, Lightning was...OK. Snow was loud, obnoxious, but overall, still likeable. Didn't care for Hope, but I didn't dislike him either. Sazh was frickin' AWESOME for how well straight he played the 'down-to-earth' guy.
But then there's Vanille...
She's annoying, naive, WAAY too sexualized, panders to the lolicons, and has the single dumbest weapon I've ever seen anyone use in a Final Fantasy game (Yes, I'm including Wakka's Blitzball!)

All in all, I don't enjoy disliking Final Fantasy 13; it just failed to draw me in to what a lot of people have been calling one of the greatest RPG series of all time.

I thought the game was great, don't listen to the trolls. Everyone has their own opinions and if you like the game, more power to ya. I for one can take my DA:0 and TF2 and enjoy them right alongside my CoD and FFXIII.

Games are considered an art form for a reason, there's aesthetics involved. What one person may find stirring/pleasurable/immersion, another may find to be total trash. Look at the criticism that the works of Jackson Pollack has received for example

I know why he complains all the time. Had the writing been better, he would even be a sympathetic character. Unfortunately, it isn't. He just comes off as a whiny, selfish dick.

[sub]Still better than Snow, of course.[/sub]
HEY! *mumbles* Snow's my favorite character...

OT: I find him annoying, but bearable, his story is interesting...ish and he's a great healer.

I may be spewing a blasphemy here, but Lightning really bothers me more than anyone. She's really...abusive. Especially towards Snow (who can be a dope) but geesh. My mom was watching me play for a little while and it got to the point where she said Snow should retaliate. And why on Earth did she hit Fang?

Well I would say it's because both make terrible first impressions that the game does nothing about improving for the first 8 hours or so. After you finally get to Pulse, everything in the game improves greatly, but i can see why many wouldn't put up with it for that long.

Pretty much this. And a little bit of this:

I used this quote in a thread not unlike this one earlier because it essentially sums up my feelings on the "gameplay" of FFXIII (From one of the Metal Gear Solid 4 Unskippable's):
"Wow, [Hideo Kojima] is really afraid that giving you some gameplay would ruin his movie."
