Why does (seemingly) everyone hate this game and especially this guy?

He's annoying.

I know why he complains all the time. Had the writing been better, he would even be a sympathetic character. Unfortunately, it isn't. He just comes off as a whiny, selfish dick.

[sub]Still better than Snow, of course.[/sub]
Pretty much, this. Although I didn't mind Snow. In fact, I loved the entire cast, except Hope. He whined, but never did anything. I understand his reasons, but he never did anything, just sat back.

I thought the game was great, don't listen to the trolls. Everyone has their own opinions and if you like the game, more power to ya. I for one can take my DA:0 and TF2 and enjoy them right alongside my CoD and FFXIII.

Games are considered an art form for a reason, there's aesthetics involved. What one person may find stirring/pleasurable/immersion, another may find to be total trash. Look at the criticism that the works of Jackson Pollack has received for example

I completely agree with this statement. However, I also think that many of the people posting here are just plain, you know, WRONG. The story for this game was solid, the atb system was updated so as to not feel quite as laggy, and the characterization is, quite frankly, the best in the series. I could really use any of the main cast here as an example, but I'll go with Hope because he is in dire need of defense.

Hope starts out the game as a rather troubled individual. Believing Snow to be responsible for his mother's death due to Snow's uneccessary showmanship and cavalier attitude toward danger (Something which, I might add, Snow ADMITS IN GAME), he has some understandable hate towards him. By the end of the game, he has not only resolved this and become friends with Snow, but has accepted all of the others as his friends as well. This is something I like to call CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. From the posts I've read, not many of you have heard of it. These characters have depth and I for one felt emotionally attached to them.

And for those who say that the dialogue is a bunch of philosophical bull, I have this to say: HAVE YOU PLAYED FF 12?

Good Night.

P.S. Captcha: level lystakin. Make of that what will.

I used this quote in a thread not unlike this one earlier because it essentially sums up my feelings on the "gameplay" of FFXIII (From one of the Metal Gear Solid 4 Unskippable's):
"Wow, [Hideo Kojima] is really afraid that giving you some gameplay would ruin his movie."
Really? You may find this a little strange but I don't there are enough cutscenes. However, I'm really into cutscene galleries when they're available. It's probably all based on how pretty I think the game is. That quote made me laugh. I haven't played MGS4, but I heard it's over nine hours of non-gameplay. That's pretty extreme.

I have no idea who she is. Then again, I've never played a Final Fantasy game. I've heard people dislike it because it's extremely linear, and simplified quite a bit from earlier ones.

Here's what you're doing wrong, you aren't playing FFIX. It's pretty hard to find now, because it was severely unappreciated and didn't sell as well. But from what I've seen it's probably the best of the Final Fantisies, with strong characterization, beautiful graphics (for a PS1 game, at least) and a great story.

Now, I honestly don't like FFXIII, but not because of it's strange plot, the parts that I got through had some rather interesting character development, no, my real complaint was in the combat.

in FFXII the gambit system allowed you to customize the A.I so as to be in complete control without actually having to press a long series of buttons

XIII however, had you having to go through a long sequence of menus to get one character to attack while the other two characters went and followed one of five preset A.I's resulting in pretty much the opposite effect of what twelve did.

but as for the hope hate? well he's just kinda annoying, but then, find a JRPG without one annoying character. Though i will have to say his weapon of choice is kinda cool.

PS. For anyone who owns and completed this game, I'm about to get Vanille's Eidolon. How much longer is this game? That sounds sorta mean, but I've never completed an RPG before.

I wasn't really put off by the cutscenes in FFXIII as much as the lack of real gameplay. Admittedly, I only survived 10 hours into the game before I couldn't stomach it any further and I know all of those die-hard fans like to say "Well, it gets better 15-20 hours in." but my only thought is that it shouldn't take that long for a game to be appealing to me.

Don't get me wrong, I tried to enjoy the game. I've enjoyed every Final Fantasy I've played before it (A list including I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, Crystal Chronicles, and even the Dissidia games for the PSP) and I did want to enjoy XIII, but to me it just lacked something that the other games had. And I can't even exactly pin down what it is; The convoluted story, the fact that for all of the 10 hours I experienced all I got to do was run down several extremely linear corridors, combat only allowed me control over one character and even then it was easiest to let the AI decide everything to do, the characters were in no-way relate-able (save for Sazh), and even the most harrowing of battles was reduced to "Find out its weakness, switch paradigms every so often to heal, and spam the Auto-Battle button until it's dead."

Do not misunderstand me: I'm not saying that the game is bad. I'm not even saying that the other Final Fantasy games had more relate-able characters or better written stories. But in the end, I felt like Final Fantasy XIII was a game that hated me for wishing that I could play it.[footnote]Obviously this is all my personal opinion and in no way reflects what other people may have experienced. To be fair, the scenery was extraordinarily beautiful, the sound design was done very well, and the Paradigm system was actually the one part about the battle system that I liked.[/footnote]

I can understand that. Especially pretaining to the beginning of the game.

I'm glad that I could effectively articulate my point to you. If I were to be perfectly frank, then I would say that had Final Fantasy XIII been a movie instead of a game, I probably would have enjoyed it very much.

Because he's a one dimensional, whiny little twerp? Yeah, that's probably about right.

I disliked most aspects of FFXIII, but there's a special circle of hell devoted to Hope.

I've never played FFIIX, so I can't really say I have anything against it.

That is Hope, from Final Fantasy 13. He's a whiny little mama's boy who is completely unlikable if you ask me. And he's a useless a character a Final Fantasy has gotten since Edward from 4. At least Edward had a redeeming character, this sprat is just annoying. But, he's not as bad as Vanille at least. AND WHO NAMES A BOY "HOPE"?
Fix'

Also, I looked at Hope on TV Tropes and now I'm wondering why everyone hates him.

1. Because it felt less like a J-RPG and more like a J-Turn based linear action game...Still better then 12 though

2. Ah! My Favorite meat-shield! One problem with Hope is this: who the FUCK brings a kid along into deadly situations when he has practically no combat experience!? That and the fact he's a whiny little ***** is basically why people hate him...although most hate vanille WAAY more then Hope.

In short, the games have been going downhill since the tenth installment, to the point the developers need to be sat down, have a good long talking too and basically be required to get there shit together...it's just not evolving anymore character wise, we need some new character personalities and types then just the party from FF10's personality copy-pasted over and over again. (ok, so lightning wasn't anything like Tidus, again something i can commend 13 on, but...yeah, they just need to try out different character types. That's why I'm liking versus 13 more and more, cause they have a different kind of protagonist)

For all the steps it took forward and improved on from 12 (Combat and setting mainly) it took a dozen steps back (Characters, plot and outright removal of ANY rpg elements and freedom/customisation).

I have heard about him before, never saw him, never played that part of FF.

But honestly, I took one look at him and the answer popped into my head straight away. Take a look at the picture. Thats why everyone hates that guy. Really, no disrespect to anyone but frankly... He looks a bit gay.

So... it's not that's he's whiny and bitchy, but that people who hate him are homophobic?
