Why does (seemingly) everyone hate this game and especially this guy?

I havent played a Final Fantasy game since FFX, and yes, that means i also didnt play FFX-2. Anyhow, i havent played that game, nor watched footage of it or anything but one thing that strikes me directly as why People could hate him, or several Characters..their Names. Vanille? Hope? Lightning? Ehrm, is this Final Fantasy or "lets name all the characters after objects, feelings, natural phenomena and food!"?

That alone would cause me to actually hate that Game, i dont even need to know the Gameplay, or the Story or anything, just the names prove to me that Square Enix is at best running out of names, at worst running out of Ideas to begin with. And lets be honest, they have started running out of Ideas when they actually made a Sequel to another FF.

That and i got tired of the Emo-Bullshit. Ironically the only character to not be emo is from the only Final Fantasy game that i hated, FF9 >_>

Hope is the most whiny, selfish, unlikable character I have ever seen in a video game. He almost completely ruined the game for me.

They probably get annoyed when she tries to persuade everyone she's a man. There is no way that's a guy. And her name is Hope? That's a girl's name!

He is hope and he is freaking annoying. He complains all the time that his parents were killed, or something like that. Never bothered with the series. And I never will.

It's kinda funny how people believe the characters started to suck/be annoying around FFX, which is the first in the series where they have voice actors. XD

I understand the Hope hate, because (although somewhat justified) all he does the entire game is whine and try and build up the courage to actually say something to Snow, but it takes him many, many hours before he finally confronts Snow about his mother. Yes, he has his reasons to be depressed, but it's still not fun to see some kid be a whiny, spineless, badly written ***** for ten hours straight. Also his sudden 180 turn of character was just stupid.

What I personally don't understand is why SNOW is so hated. Yes, the guy is flawed and has gotten himself into trouble because of his excessive optimism, but he is still by far the kindest person in the group. While characters like Lightning and Hope were wallowing in their own despair, being full of teen angst and whatnot, Snow was the only character that had faith in their abilities.

People hate Snow because he's responsible for killing Hope's mother...Even though he had nothing to do with it. They were facing certain destruction, asked for volunteers on a dangerous mission and Hope's mother willingly joined the group. People die during war and while I understand Hope's hatred for Snow, since he's just a kid and doesn't understand this, I don't get why other gamers blame Snow as well. Even though Snow had nothing to do with this, he still blamed himself for it.

People hate Snow because he's the kind of "Bro"-person. You know, the kind of people many gamers hate for some weird reason. I can't even get into this because I have no idea why this phenomenon exists.

People hate Snow because of the excessive optimism, even though we eventually see there was a reason for this. The game went out of the way to show that snow had always been on the verge of breaking down (after he 'realized the truth') and his optimism was the only thing that kept him AND THE OTHERS going. Even Lightning said this in the end. And SO WHAT?! Why is excessive optimism worse than the constant emo, darkness consumes my soul, teen angst ridden bullshit FF characters we constantly get to see? Optimism is always better than pessimism in nearly every way possible, so I was absolutely glad that Snow was usually there to keep the team's hopes up.

I mean fuck, the guy is as selfless as you can get. He wasn't responsible for what happened to Serah, but he takes the blame when Lightning blames it on him for no reason and doesn't even fight back when that stupid **** punches him for unjust reasons. I mean, Lightning comes up with a stupid reason as for why he's responsible, even after having rejected her little sister when she confronted her with her problem. Snow takes the blame. Hope's mother dies, Snow takes the blame. Whenever people were in danger, Snow tried his best to help as many people as possible, even if it meant endangering himself.

Seriously, Snow is without a doubt the kindest person in the group. All he does, he does for others. Only his decision of staying with Serah at the beginning of the game was a bit less selfless. He does have an ego, but who doesn't. And he somewhat deserves it. He was a hero, just like the rest of the group.

Yes, he has his flaws and yes he makes mistakes (like everyone else in the game constantly do), but I never found those reasons enough to hate a guy like that. Don't get me wrong now, I'm not saying "I'M RIGHT AND YOU'RE WRONG! YOU'RE STUPID FOR HATING HIM" or anything. You don't have to like the guy, but I just personally never understood the reason for the hate he's getting. He's IMO the most underrated FF character ever, along with Zack.

I really like the game, but Hope is just a whiny little wierdo.

When he and Snow team up, double annoying.

Also, that one scene on Gran Pulse where there is implied feelings between him and Vanille, double annoyinig, with annoying babies.
Oh dear

The part where Snow wanted to Stay and try to free Serah, I understand what you mean by him being a bit Selfish, but I took it as his burning love moved him to the point where at that moment Serah his loved one was in danger and he wasn't just going to leave her there, and when Lightening punch him *TWICE&* for him wanting to save her sister, I was like starting to doubt my ability to go on playing the game, but I did and loved it.
That's why I said it was a bit less selfless, not selfish. You said it yourself, his fiancé was right there and was still alive in a way (At least to Snow she was. Lightning simply kept saying "MY SISTER IS DEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAD"). And yeah, Lightning really was an excruciatingly annoying character for the first few hours.

I did finish the game, but I can't say I enjoyed it very much, but if you did, more power to you =).

All of the men in that game look like women.
Snow and Sazh look pretty manly actually.

Stuff it, I'm going to nail my colours to the mast over this; I like FFXIII, and Hope is possibly my favourite character from it.

*waits to get shredded*

Anyone noticed that he looks like the protagonist from Silent Hill 3...or rather the little sister of the protagonist from Silent Hill 3?

I've not played Final Fantasy, but the point probably is that I dislike the current ideal for male characters in Japanese culture. He looks like somebody just stole his teddy bear and called him a poopy head and is about to bawl his eyes out for his mother. Totally unappealing to me.
