As in, as opposed to a barter system, wherein if two men farm two different livestock, have a similar weight of each, but the value of one plummets, the owner has no option but to sell for less, whereas the individual currency unit is worth the same to everyone.Shivarage said:

All the people who have been arguing things like "because we wouldn't do anything if we weren't given it in return" etc. Well if we never invented any type of currency we wouldn't know any different would we. I expect people would get 'paid' with food and other items for work instead of money. Just cutting out the middle man as it were.
Money is a means to an end. People needed something to trade with and so they invented something that would simplify that process. Allowing for trade to be conducted easily and quickly. Without the invention of money we wouldn't be able to advance as we did. (as a race that is)
Ofcource there are other ways we could have evolved that didn't call for money but history has taken its turn. Nowadays we are so attached to the system that we can nolonger do without. It has become an integral piece of our society much like electricity or even clothing.

Money is more efficient than bartering.
If everything was done by charity workers? Only a very few amount of people in the World would do everything for charity.
Besides, money is only money if you believe in it. In reality, it is nothing more than pieces of paper with symbols on it. Currency isn't a thing. It's more of a belief system that humans use.

Truth being said, those bank notes you carry in your pocket is't really worth shit.

Probably already said before, but I really can't care, so I'm gonna say it anyway.
The situation here is called Communism. It sounds nice and pretty, but it doesn't really hold up in real life. The simple reason is that people like to be rewarded for what they do - if everything was free and nothing had any cost, then nobody would do s***. Think of it this way: If someone told you that you never had to do any work for the rest of your life, would you finally get that masters degree in quantum mechanics/theoretical physics, or would you sit on your arse playing video games 18 hours a day?

The simple reason is that people like to be rewarded for what they do - if everything was free and nothing had any cost, then nobody would do s***. Because it took so long to research it, it'd feel like a waste if we didn't. Plus it gives some commerce benefits.

The current monetary system. which has been the same for thousands of years is the biggest weapon anyone can weld. It works in a way which keeps a very select few groups of people in the world on top and controlling everything from their civilians their land ect. It allows for people to starve and men to bathe in gold. a simple creditary system would allow for people to finally be happy, to finally have food and not worry about any bills. but everyone would and still work an equal share to allow economics to flow, we could all afford to have cleaner and more nutritious foods, safer cars, faster computers. But no.. we arnt allowed to be happy and live better, becuz that would cost our governments and corporate giants money...I guess only having 99.92% of the world's money "small pieces of cotton paper with shitty pictures" on them isn't enough.
I do understand where the OP is coming from, however, for communism to work, society would need a huge paradigm shift toward global humanitarianism, new sociological standards. Essentially, this would mean that you would have to bring an end to the 7 deadly sins:
Lust
Gluttony
Greed
Sloth
Wrath
Envy
Pride
Now think about it, those things are the things that prevent us from being able to reach such a utopia. Do I think that we can, as a species, have some sort of new age of society where none of these things even exist? Well, we can, but most of the ways that can be achieved are considered inhumane and/or oppressive.

If everything were free - why would you need a charity worker? Get your own damn stuff. It's free isn't it? (See how quickly that breaks down?) There is not a sane person on this earth that wants to do something for someone else just because. There is always a motivating factor - love, money, power, sex, ice cream...
The barter system doesn't work if you have nothing to trade, so a currency solves that. You provide goods or services, and someone gives you currency in return. That currency represents value that you can now use to obtain the goods or services you want / need.

even if we did do that we'd essentially be switching to the exchange of services for goods. and Currency is EXACTLY that only with an added quantifiable standardized step in the process.Kiyotaki said:
