Here we go again. As for hate against scientologists, it has more to do with the number of celebrities embracing the church and that all so typical "hate the big dog" attitude of most people.

Now, Before I read one more response on this thread and become inevitably enraged, religion is a horrible point of discussion on these forums it always leads to ignorant and rude comments that would not have resulted otherwise. These topics are some of the largest points of tension on these forums.

Note the constant: "that goes for all religions" that is being thrown into every other post just to make sure said posters get there yahtzee driven poke in that a focus on Scientology would not allow.

For 2009 I encourage all members of the escapist to avoid topics like this and avoid commenting in them.

There are many forums that are built for and encourage this type of discussion, let them have it.
Aye, and hear here (or look, I suppose.).

Scientology is a scam, no other religion charges you money to learn the core of the teachings. They are brutal on critics, going so far as to follow and harass them, and they even raided the IRS in "Operation Snow White". They don't deserve their tax-exempt status

"I?d like to start a religion. That?s where the money is."
-L. Ron Hubbard, creator of Scientology

It is more Cult like at the moment but maybe it will become a real religion at some point.
Oh boy! One more organized religion to look forward too! I sure can't wait!

Most of the points you made are quite valid, but I remember trying to find out what Scientology was all about and I have to say that it's basis seems to be a little more crazy than some other major religions. But that is just my own opinion.

Germany said it is a cult and gave it the banhammer. I agree with Germany.
What exactly do you mean by banhammer? Can Germany simply ban religions it doesn't like?
It's not a religion. They put in a request to be recognized as such and the Germans, after an investigation, said "fuck no."

Because it's not. a. religion.

They act like a classic cult, but I think they want to be a reglion to avoid tax.

EDIT:

Ace, it is a religion. You just need to broaden your term for religion. It's a belief system.
Calling it a reglion means they get tax brakes, they do not derserve anything. So they are not a reglion, they are a cult who tires to coerce people into joining and then tells them to ignore friends and family. I call that a cult, not every member is crazy, but as a whole it is.

If you really think they are a reglion, you need to broaden your term for scam.

I generally don't like any religion, I just don't care much for their ideas but will happily go about my business ignoring them and letting them get on with their business too. However Scientology really annoys me, not because of it's general 'cultishness' but because of the name. Not only have they put '-ology' onto the end like Astrology did but they put 'Scien-' onto the front which just isn't on.

You may have guessed that I am somewhat of a science type person which I am, so even if it is all just harmless nomenclature I almost find it offensive. And that is the only reason I have a problem with them. If they were the Wacky Space Men Cult I would just be satisfied with laughing at them and their silly ways.

The reason why I do not approve of Scientology, is that it's adding another faith into a world already plagued with conflict often surrounding religion. I don't think it should have been much of a surprise to them to find people opposed to their church. Charging people isn't the only issue -- it's that they're charging people when there are so many religions that don't. Then again, I guess you could say it's the "consumers'" fault. Why buy a Big Mac from a street vendor selling them at three times the price, when McDonalds is having a giveaway?

Better question: why have a Big Mac at all? I've had one throughout my entire life and it wasn't all that great. The special sauce was good, though. But it tastes almost exactly like ketchup and mayonaise mixed together -- there's definitely something missing, however.

Another good question: where will you find a street vendor selling Big Macs?

Personally, I believe that people should be able to forge their own beliefs. But really, those who cannot do actually contribute to society, because churches tend to make large donations to charities.

My arguements are fallacious, that it kind of the point of this thread. People parrotting the usual Scientology is bad because they did "X" and "X" is evil can be countered by saying X is also present in government, relgion and other social political groupings.

It must have something to it surely because belief system that has run for nearly 60 years flies in the face of public opinion in such a major way and is universally hated still takes on new members every year.

Why do people continue to follow the path of scientology despite being aware of everyones view of it. Surely Travolta and Cruise would have realised it was a public relations nightmare to have such a crippling millstone around there neck and decry it openly if there was absolutely nothing to it.

Their attitude towards the fields of psychology and psychiatry is just reprehensible. They actually think their fool religion is mentally "healthier" than freaking science, and they regularly protest the practice of psychology/psychiatry. THAT is when I said, "That's it, you're done. FUCK YOU, Scientology."

That's how they get new members. They convince you that they're the cure for your depression, bipolar disorder, childhood trauma, what have you, instead of therapy or even maturity. Makes me sick to my stomach.

Come on people, lets be honest. It's not us that hates Scientology, it's the alien spirits possessing us that are making us fear the truth! Only by buying the Church's mind-cleansing subliminal tapes can we hope to rid ourselves of the psychic trauma that has been inflicted upon us! The entire field of therapy is in league with the aliens - don't trust them... ¬,¬

well for me it is simply because it is a religion, not only that but it is a religion that doesn't have an interesting mythology, the mythos of the abrahamic religions is very dynamic and interesting, although it has alot of its rituals from the egyptian mythos, at least in the abrhamic isn't that chaotic. the ancient pantheon of the greeks however is one of the best of all religious stories, because it models its philosophies into something naturally that is a part of the world. in the same way that lovecraft built his cthuhlu mythos.

then again not much of the scientology doctrine has been revealed which makes it hard for me to judge the story, and there is no way im going to pay a fortune to join some overpriced book club, especially if the story is a rip off from the book of law from thelema(as far as i know)

so for me its three things,
1: it is a religion
2: it is possibly a bad book
3: its an elitist faith for elitist people from space!

As far as the OP mentioned about Travolta, if I recall some articles I saw, he had taken his son off of a few medicines several months ago and admitted that he was suffering from "severe" seizures at least once a week.

So, at least in his case, it was a bit more "If your kid starts to convulse after you take him off his meds, maybe that wasn't a bright idea." Granted, I suppose the religion was frowning on John's use of secular healing.

Overall, I suppose I have issues with religion as a whole, but philosophy ends up being useful, and taking various religious texts as philosophical texts are much more interesting. That being said, Scientology is based around science fiction texts, and I just simply can't find the philosophical importance of "The Courtship of Princess Leia" or "Heir to the Force."

Scientology is the new kid on the block, so it gets picked on more. Its as simple as that. I reckon if you really get into the nitty-gritty stuff, you would find that a lot of Scientology's beliefs are about as credible as beliefs from every other religion out there.

I think the really interesting thing about Scientology is that most people upon learning about it will immidiatly call bullshit on it, when you can call bullshit on all the older religions over similar issues; for example alien souls infesting our bodies / God is inside all of us.

Just to clarify, I'm one of the many people who call bullshit on Scientology, mainly over the money issue.

Isn't scientology about god having omething to do with aliens? ( this is probably complete bull, so don't judge me by it). Still, it's the fact that most religious people won't like scientology because it's unpopular in itself, and most non religious people (like me) won't like scientology anyway.
