I'd be glad to do the job if they wanted to pay me for it, but I don't think a large enough portion of the audience here cares.

I don't think every harem has that self-insert protagonist. The crappy ones do though. Bravo Girls, Rosario+Vampire, and To Love-Ru all have really easy insert protagonist. Massive beta males? Check. Rely on the girls for everything? Check. Somehow has a harem even though he's boring as crap? Check. I don't agree with Noucome though, the protagonist is actually considered attractive, so it makes sense girls might like him. And every girl besides Chocolat had feelings for him before his powers. I haven't seen The Index series, so I can't argue with you there.

I actually don't care for the moe genre, but it has slowly invaded even some mainstream anime. Hiding in the cute girls with big eyes. I too don't see the point of moe, I even tried to watch my first Moe series this anime season. Four episodes in I just gave up. They somehow even have less character and story development than harems. But I still think they have a right to exist.

I think an anime guy could work well into the Escapist, but he would need a few things first....

1. He would need a personality. He can't just be another blogger or somebody who writes columns. He has to have a persona that the everyone who visits the Escapist will recognize. Yahtzee is a cynic. Bob is liberal progressive. Jim is a corporation-slamming narcissist. This guy can't just be the overexcited "weebo" who likes his job. He has to bring "something" the Escapist hasn't seen yet.

2. He has to be good. Like really good. Like look at a dvd box cover and be able to tell the plot, who the cast is, and why they all suck in a single sentence good. Like, somebody ask him who would win between Sailor Moon and Madoka Magica and then answer the question seriously like he was a co-host of DEATH BATTLE good. He has to be the most unique anime guy the Escapist could find.

3. He can't shy away from the more raunchy parts of anime culture. When he reviews Queen's Blade and they introduce the character who fights her battles using her own breast milk, he can't be the type to shake his head and go "OH, JAPAN." No, he has to break out his notepad and record that shit like he was watching a conspiracy documentary. He has to be straight-faced in the face of all of Japan's kookiness.

At least, these are the qualifications I think he should have.

We used to have a review section dedicated to anime, but it died out. However, I don't remember seeing an "anime review series".

I would suggest GRArkada and his series Glass Reflection since he has good clean series with excellent production on Youtube. One thing that I'm not sure about is if he would be distinct enough so that Escapist members will not grill him and another thing that worries me if he would be able to produce reviews every week. That latter makes me think that he would be more suited to Channel Awesome, but they have enough anime guys as it is.

They should have an anime guy,but make sure the person does not know a thing about anime and basically film the reactions.

To my recollection, didn't the reviews only come out when a series was released in North America?
I have no interest in reading a review for a show I finished 3 years ago.

Also, it seems like the Escapist has a large anime viewerbase, but I don't think it actually does besides a bunch of people who watched Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist and then only recommend those.

I'm pretty sure I saw a thread on here asking for your favourite comedy animes and someone wrote Cowboy Bebop.

As for my distaste for moe, most of the shows that people prop up as bastions of moe are stuff like K-on or A-channel which have no dramatic tension, no conflict, and are nothing but just cute girls doing cute things and I just smack my head in boredom.
God I'm so sick of hearing this. It's like people don't even watch the shows they're complaining about.

One day I'm going to write a thesis length dissertation on why K-On is a great show.

When I look at anime, I see a medium that is able to challenge people's morals and view of the world by making situations and worlds that don't exist in real life but reflect something in humanity; the moe stuff squanders that potential just to make us feel nice and comfy.
So what you're saying here is every anime has to be supernatural or surreal? Does every anime have to be a combat Shonen? Or a Satoshi Kon wack job? What is actually wrong with fluff content besides that you don't like it? There are enough studios not producing it that it shouldn't matter.

Why does it upset you when Anime isn't 100% only shows you like? You're coming off as kind of insecure to me. Like if people look at some moe or harem they'll assume all anime is like that then paint you with the brush as someone who watches that kind of thing.

A) please give an abstract since you seem so invested in it

B) It's not just shows i don't like getting made that concerns me, it's the continual pandering of the otkau and NEET with low quality crap that concerns me

Edit: also I would rather we have shows like Psycho pass, Ghost in the shell and Madoka to fill the ranks: shows that either are commentary on something in real life or decontructions of established tropes

There are whole web sites dedicated to anime and manga that are well more geared for it than the Escapist. Have you tried Anime News Network? With so much already out there, why do they need a part time specialist here?

I'd totally watch a show regarding anime..either new or old, reviews and all that.

I'm fairly new at anime (have maybe a dozen under my belt) so this would be really appreciated.

Probably because "there isn't room." In what? I dunno. The budget, I guess.

The staff also probably don't think such a series will get enough hits to justify the cost.

That was literally the first person I thought of, in terms of an "Anime Guy" in general... I mean, I kinda like him better than the other "anime people" on Channel Awesome...

OT: I think the job of doing just anime reviews would probably work best with more than just a one-person thing... Sure, anime is a medium, but the genres it encompasses is too vast for just a single person to "objectively" review every single new anime, both subbed AND dubbed... In fact, if it was just two people, one task of reviewing just subbed anime and another person reviewing just dubbed anime, it could work since the last thing we need is a single reviewer bringing in "subbed vs dubbed"-like vibes whenever the anime in question has both available...

Regardless, I'm sure some of us here would happily take the job, even for free... But, again, I personally don't think the task should go to just one person, like with MovieBob doing movie reviews basically...

Because as far as escapist from what I have seen on the forums is concerned anime fans are the scum of the earth and have to walk a very fine line before non stop character assassination.

Then some of the anime fans here are the uppercrust types who are all Ghost in the Shell or GTFO despite liking Kill la Kill.

And as I mentioned despite being a gamer site you can't be too nerdy or whatever I metan look up the Miyazaki quote or anything about the word waifu there is way too much of chip on the shoulders around here to worry about anime specialist.

You are better off with places like anime newsnetwork thought their forum can be very derp over there too.

I do admit that our little community is a bit immature or elitist with their hobby.

this brings up two questions

1) what would it take for the anime community on the Escapist to improve

2) this is a personal one, i assume that you think of me as one of the elitists?

There's not really that big an audience probably. Anime fans tend to fall into the category of that guy with tiny statues of anime girls (me<,) and those people who haven't really watched anything past the 90's or early 00's because they only see cute girls doing cute things (i.g. "Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shells are the only animes worth watching" crowd.)

Most of the anime to review would probably not be of interest to the latter group.

are you a person that regards anime as a passing fad from the 90's? or do you just not know how popular anime is? i doubt that many anime fans watch anime just to see cute girls doing cute things" as you say.. Bleach, Naruto, Soul Eater, Black Lagoon Deadman Wonderland. these certainly wouldn't gall into your "cute girls doing cute things" close mindedness.. also not all anime fans have figurines of tiny statues of aniem girls.. i've been an anime fan for going on 10 years and have plenty of dvds and manga.. but I've never seen the reason to but statues.. and the same for my friends that also love anime.

The most probable reason for not having a anime person is either money or the fact that this website is mostly focus on video games.. they do other stuff too, but mostly games.. anyone can do an anime review and there's a forum page for talking about stuff like anime... there probably wont ever be "anime person" if so they would have done it by now and many of us, like myself would have jumped at the offer already

1.For the anime community is escapist to improve is there one? I mean there are people that like anime but like I said there is so much "otaku" "NEET" and "shut in" accusations and platitude finger waving or enjoying a genre or trope instead of outright hating or being annoyed by it. Or the worse blaming cardboard cutout anime group on why anime "sucks". Their is just too much negativity here and other anime dedicated forums so I don't know what to do to improve it.

2. I will admit you do come off that way but it is nothing super personal but you might of been caught in my crossfire at discussion I have had on other anime related sights and the stuff I see here on escapist. I mean your not the first but GitS is part of the holy trinity which includes Bebop as why x suck why can't it be Bebop GitS etc.

I guess my gripe is I own Cowboy Bebop I love that series and right now it is next to my complete season of Tenchi Muyo GXP which would probably get venom here.

Anime is just a vast medium and everyone is too much into bashing tropes when technically it should be cliche's to realize whats out there and maybe not try to find the next Bebop or whatever and enjoy your genres and shows based on merit.

Why doesn't someone here just start review threads? If their threads grow enough in popularity they might get hired you know?

I see, thanks.

I guess my issue with harem and moe shows is that most of them are really underdeveloped in the charcter depatment. So many of them feel like they either waste my time with "cute girls doing cute things"(I really need to make an abbreviation about that) or they have a super dense passive protagonest who somehow get every single girl. It pisses me off that shows like that are getting popular and being bought while the genuine good shows like GitS, Psycho pass and Bebop (I would also argue Kill la Kill in the same way a Paul Verhoeven movie is dumb but with subtext) sometimes get sidelined. It doesn't help that something like Ikki Tousen gets 4 seasons while many concepts are probably in the backburner

Also, I want to enjoy anime but I see so many examples of lazy characters, mediocre execution or just plain blatant fanservice that makes me just want to throw my hand up and condemn the whole media
