Yay another homosexuality thread

I have not researched this but I imagine it should work.
The church doesn't want to marry gays so what about ship Captains?
They could by-pass the church completely.

some people offend very easily on this site to you people I say sorry I am not trying to upset anyone.
In the USA, the captain of a ship cannot perform marriages unless he is also some sort of person who is specifically licensed to do so (like a minister). It is a common myth that they have that power, but it isn't true.

because being married by a captain holds the same authority as being married by a priest: none, unless you have a marriage license.

weddings are ceremonial. you can have as many weddings as you want, say "i do" as many times as you want, but you won't have the same legal rights as a married couple until you have a marriage license (which is what gays want: the same legal rights as straight married couples). the problem isn't that priests won't marry gay couples, the problem is that the government doesn't grant them marriage licenses.

Boats are for riding ponies on.

You don't need a church to get married, you can get married by the state*. Though while I can understand why churches won't allow gay marriage, there is no reason the government shouldn't allow it. There is a separation of church and state for a reason.

I believe the point is they want their marriage to be legal, and recognized by all. If they can't get a marriage license, it does not make them married, regardless of who did it.

The only way I could get married by a ship captain was if it was on a pirate ship and I was fighting fish-people and members of the East India Trading Company in the middle of a maelstrom.

Which I don't see as being particularly likely to happen.

Plus I'm pretty sure said marriage would not be considered legal since "owning a boat" is not all it takes to qualify a person to perform legally sanctioned marriages. There's a bit more to it than that.

Well, I can think of two reasons why not:

1: Because, being on a boat would make them instantly want to break into song, singing The Lonely Islands I'm On A Boat. Because, they would be on a boat, and that's what all sane people want to do, having heard that song.

2: Because of very hazy legal ramifications and uncertainty. There seems to be no guarantee that it would be legally recognized. And as a previous poster mentioned that ships still operate under the laws of the country whose flag they sail under, it may be illegal.

Marriage is everything to do with the church mate, it is the 'holy union between man and woman'.
No, it is not. It is a legal contract between two people recognized by the state. You can have a religious component if you want, but it does not count unless you make the oath in front of a judge.
