Why exactly did we have to go through Ravenholm?

What I want to know is why aren't there more operational vehicles? I would have circumvented the creepy creepy place as much as possible, and used a motorcycle to do a backflip and land and keep going, too!
OK, maybe not a motorcycle, but still, he could have gone around the town. It didn't look that big, and not having to do physics puzzles would prolly save a lot of time.
Because that would require playing through more Vehicle sections, and you will be hard pressed to find ones that are worse than the hovercraft and dune buggy.

Yeah, pretty much this. Besides, the Combine won't follow into a crab-infested town.

My question would be, why does the Combine use Crabs as a weapon in the first place? It seems a little imprecise and easy to evade.
The combine have infinite resources - headcrabs are terrifying. Saturation bomb an area with headcrab shells, and not only will that town shut up, but every other one will shut up too. Weird thing, people don't like being transformed into still conscious mutated zombies.
Well yeah, but....Why not just use actual bombs?
Because Actual bombs are expensive and throwing a parasite in a tube and launching it out is a hell of a lot cheaper and is guaranteed to cause panic.
Wait wait wait....You're saying that finding and capturing incredibly dangerous (yet very tiny) creatures, holding them captive (that means feeding, etc) then packing them into rockets (which must be designed in a way so that it can not only carry multiple crabs, must they must be able to survive the landing) and launching them into areas where, for all you know, the intended targets will escape and/or just kill the crabs....Is less expensive/practical then just making the straight up bombs, weapons that are less easily evaded and that even humans, who are probably thousands of years behind the Combine; can mass-produce easily?

Come on.

This doesn't knock down your argument in the slightest, but they could probably just breed them.

Other than that I agree with your argument.

OT: Hm...

I thought it was a waste of time anyway. You get captured by the Combine anyway. Well. You let them capture you, I guess.

If your Gordan Motherfuckin Freeman you should be able to. The laws of plausibility are overruled when there is that much badassery in one human being.

Because it is the best, or at least the most memorable, level in the entire game. Enough said. As far as transition goes, it flows better than suddenly switching to Xen in the first game. Now, for an actual reason for in-universe sake...

Black Mesa East was under attack. That entire force was tasked with looking for Gordon, and it's a safe bet that as soon as he showed up, Doctor Mossmon (however you spell it) sent the word out. That was a lot of soldiers, since they were able to capture Eli, since I'm sure many people died trying to save him. Alyx probably already knew Gordon could handle himself, both from what she'd seen and stories her father told her, so she figured that Gordon would be able to safe enough. All other exits were blocked when that tunnel collapsed, and the gravity gun can't move boulders or heavy objects, so he couldn't dig himself out. There would have also been the risk of further cave in if he or Dog had tried to move the rocks. And there would have been no way for Gordon to hang on to Dog's back while he climbed. Have you seen the way he moves when he's in a hurry? Too jerky. So, that's my answer.

Alyx said don't go to Ravenholm just to gtfo. D0g took you to the Ravenhom tunnel then stuff collapsed but it still makes no sense D0g apparently has the strength of 15 retarded gorillas and could have easily recleared the path.

They probably just breed the crabs and then place them into the bombs before they hatch or are born or whatever they do. Even then, it can be a psychological thing. how many times have you had one of those suckers sneak up on you? Even then, do you know what the worse part of a zombie apocalypse is? Fighting and being forced to kill your own friends. Heck, the people underneath the head crab guys are still alive during all and killing the head crab would kill them in the end.

The bigger question is - are the resistance too inept to raid museums and steal WW1 era german helmets as headcrab defense, or did the combine see such an obvious threat to their reign of terror, and 'suppress' them all? :O
this! or is it like aliens and the headcrabs melt their way in or something :S

My hypothesis: Gordon is a fatty, or at least too big to fit through people sized holes in his hazmat suit.

This also explains his inability to prevent Alyx from getting shanked by the hunters in Ep 2

this really shine a whole new light on the series, Gordon is not the charismatic mute to whom trouble is bound, but is that annoying mute who keeps screwing up the resistance's plans. this would also explain why all the npc's would reminded you that your name was Gordon and what you should do next every ten seconds, and ask you if you needed ammo and health like you were a 2 year-old.

MY WORLD HAS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN!

I am pretty sure you were trapped and the only way out of there was through Ravenholm. Only other exit would have probably gotten you killed by the Combine. Besides, meeting that priest made Ravenholm all worth it. That entire level was pretty great.
Marik2 said:
Yeah my thoughts exactly the priest was a cool guy.
Are you kidding, I fucking hate that level! God damn Headcrabs. Though, I agree that the priest it cool.

Well I thought it captured the feel of actually fighting in a zombie infested place.
Well, that's why I hate Ravenholm.

Good job, Valve!

That should clear up that debate.

OT: I loved the physics playground of Ravenholm...but black headcrabs still haunt my nightmares. >.>

Why? Because.

All the reasons given here are valid, but in the end this is the only true one.

You may as well ask why didn't Freeman side with the Combine and lead armies to crush the Resistance. Because.

Why did they always have to stop running and have a chat and a cup of tea, therefore allowing the Combine to catch up with them? Because.

Why didn't he just hop in his dune buggy with Alyx and disappear for the horizon? Bec... No, actually there is no answer for that. His one moment of extreme stupidity!

It makes sense on most fronts.

The man pulling the strings has a goal for Gordon, and that tower lies beyond that cursed patch of hell. The revolution that backs him wants to win the war, and Gordon is an excellent disruption. With enormous resources nipping at his heels and even more placed in a desperate attempt to slow him down, the Resistance is free to maneuver. Sure, Gordon's passing brings destruction to a few cells here and there, but sacrifices must be made to win the war. Alex, clearly not knowing that Gordon is an unstoppable killing machine, tells him to go in the one direction that does not lead into the waiting arms of the Combine, to certain death for most anyone.
