Guess a lot of reasons for the dislikes is that it aint World of Warcraft.

Good points include fast-phased combat though. A bit of an hack and slash with some RPG elements in an MMO. Hope it works out for them.

Its primary fanbase are jaded WoW players fed uyp with blizzards bandering to people who don't actually play the game.

Its primary haters are WoW fanboys.
Take that what you will.

I've been looking for a new MMO for awhile now. I tried Rift mainly out of curiosity and desire for a new MMO. To be honest I wasn't expecting that much from it. But I was pleasantly surprised.

My favorite thing about it are the Rift events. Especially the zone-wide mass invasions. It's really cool to get to take part in something so crazy and feels relevant too. I was incredibly ignorant about the premise of these Rift events, so when an invasion began it took me by complete surprise. There I was at level 12 fighting huge armies of demons attempting to take over the world. A near hour later, and personally helping in closing more than half a dozen rifts and killing the invasion boss, it was finally over. And it felt awesome!

It's nice that being so low level still gives you and everyone else a chance to take part in something so awesome. Being handsomely rewarded with rift exclusive loot, experience, and the sense of satisfaction. It's just a fun game.

This is... quite accurate. Although I personally haven't played WoW in so long I don't think it even deserves to be mentioned in my reasons for playing rift. I do consider myself to be a "jaded" player. mainly because I've had so many bad experiences with MMO's. Although I'm not so jaded anymore.

It's really fucking boring, like WoW, with the added annoyance of not being able to finish any fucking quests because rifts keep opening on my head where the least enemies are easily my match while groups come together and disband in the space 30 seconds which means I can't gather a party to any god damn things without forging out alone to have more fucking rifts open on my head meaning I can't finish any of my quests.

Because people have differing tastes and opinions and are therefore, entitled to feel differently about something?

Just saiyan. (Spelt that way purposely)

I'm going to guess that it's the same problem that brings down every other dead-end MMO:

Namely, the fact that it is like World of Warcraft but lacks the key ingredient of actually being World of Warcraft.

So anyone who doesn't want to play WoW also doesn't want to play Rift because it's basically the same thing. And anyone who does want to play a game like WoW is already playing WoW.

Worst of both worlds.

Hell, you'd think MMO developers would've learned by now.

Clerk at Gamestop tried to sell me on it when i got back into WoW, i asked him what they did differently. He told me you level you get gear, you do dungeons, and raids and pvp, and get more gear. but the presentation is better and there is no "right spec"

Ok...so it's exactly the same as what I have to do in WoW with slight differences, and now there's going to be people who have no idea what the hell they are doing, which happens in WoW but at least you can tell people are knobs by missing crucial points in specs.

The problem with any MMO is that they are all starting off with "lets make this like WoW but..."

So the main complaint is that it's not WoW but close enough. But isn't that a good thing basing your game around a massivly popular game isn't a bad way to design and well i liked rift a hellava lot more then WoW mainly because what it does does some things differently and those things that havent been done or i havent seen are great ideas, yes it has flaws, rifts opening up on you unexpectedly etc but it's a new game they have still got the Beta going so hopefully they fix those soon.

Finnaly when the words MMORPG come into your head what pops up WoW probably why? because it's the Biggets one out there it's so Big that it devoured an enitre gnre so whenever a new MMORPG comes out it must be compared to WoW questing, grinding etc but isn't that the main point of MMORPGs to have grinding PvP and all that stuff that keeps us hooked. It shoudln't be based on that it should be based on what it adds to the grinding,PvP etc.

I liked Rift but I quit after being bored at tier 2 dungeons, mostly because there was not enough tanks to go around everybody plays a rogue ( including me ) and they as a whole main-class are UP.

It's a good game, but I imagine it's caught in that horrible band of non-MMO fans not wanting to play because it's too much like WoW and WoW fans not liking it because it isn't WoW. I'm only playing it to waste time really.

Like a lot of people I was testing Rift because I wanted to go on a different MMO other than WoW.

To me Rift is just a re-skinned WoW, it's good but it bored the hell out of me after a levels. Obviously it's just my opinion, I don't hate Rift because I'm a WoW player, I just dislike it because I tried it and found it not for me.

I enjoyed it, in Beta and the first month of release.. however.. I didn't subscribe and am now back in WoW.

Many reasons..

One, I found alot of the animations and sound affects lacked "weight" and my wife disliked the animations so badly she couldn't play it... I generally only enjoy MMOs playing beside her.

Two, Rifts and Invasions were fun.. when that's what you wanted to be doing. It was extremely difficult to function when they were happening if you did not want to take part without going to another zone/server/character. Furthermore, at quiet times, although they didn't spawn so easily they became near impossible to defeat because of a lack of players. I foresaw this becoming a major issue as the average level of players moved towards cap and there were less players to help lower Rifts get closed.

Three, the level range of dungeon's and the chat channel restrictions made it very hard to get groups even as a tank. Removing people from lower level chat channels, not providing any sort of global LFG and making the dungeon's at the top end of a zone's level range meant that people would outlevel dungeon's easily and it was simply to much of a chore to do them.

Best make your own opinion on it.
Its like wow because its the GENRE.
Guild wars 2 and TERA are much more different from WOW but Rift is unique because of its dynamic world and class designs as well as a couple of other advancements like its looking for group system.

My page glitched and my ramblings disappeared :( I'm too lazy to type so much again SO (and i did it anyway, woe is me)

WoW - Storyline changes from Warcraft 3 when it was pure, [worse] balance issues from WotLK onwards, replacing grinding quests with piss easy ride-random-vehicle-in-circles-esque quests (which i think is worse), out of control health levels, losing any sense of difficulty with the grindy quests, cutscenes. There is more but i have a goldfish memory sooooo XD.

RIFT - Has everything that every other MMO has but does things in its own way which seems to be only a minor change but dramatically improves the atmosphere and gameplay, such as seemingly more intense fights that look a lot better not graphics-wise, it just looks better. The rift idea is a bit of a gimmick and can get annoying at times, but is the most fun I've had in an MMO when i wanted to do the rift. When i didn't, however, it became quite annoying. Its a simple problem to fix if they put their minds to it.

In the end - IMO things need to change dramatically. i want to see FPS style fighting with more passives and limited skills that are activated by simple combos, mini-storylines for quest-chains in each area that actually seem relevant to the main storyline and that make you care about the people involved, NPC or player. Shorter and more enjoyable leveling times, with more time and effort being spent on end game content that continues to grow week after week to keep end-game (its not end-game but i'll just call it that) from becoming stale. Classes and talent trees that allow for an array of optimum builds so it seems more like you are creating the character the way you want, and not just building it into some pre-determined mould. Crafting skills with a gentle learning curve, but recipes that need rare materials (makes it easy to level, hard to reap the benefits, at least for higher level gear). Massively versatile customisation options for how your character looks and how his/her gear looks.
Again, goldfish memory, moving on.

Except thats the end of my ranting... Apologies that only one paragraph was directly relevent.

I was in on a very early stage of development and played/tested the game for a very long time. I'm just burnt out on high fantasy. I think my level of burntoutness is over the point where I can never play a high fantasy MMORPG ever again.

For what it's worth, Rift was mechanically always a good game, but they made a big mistake about a month before release: PvP gear. That's what the damn WoW kiddies want, but it splits the game in two different progressions and that's when I take my money and go.
If anything, RIFT actually respects the playerbase's desires BY splitting the progressions. That way pvp balance won't affect pve balance and whatnot.

Did we play the same game? It was the most like WoW I ever played, just with everything better. AoE looting, polished and attractive environments/animations, but like gameplay wise, 80% of the skills were the same, or the same with minor tweaks, and combat worked pretty much the same. However, the Rift idea and the invasion idea is pretty cool, and I only played a trial but even THEN I was able to get dual spec. Seems like you can get 5 specs later on, and each spec you can pick your own skill trees for more customization. Soul system and whatnot.

If anything, it's disliked because it's too much like WoW with minor refinements, and not enough of a difference to really draw most people away.

*face + palm*
Yes, because Arma 2 is exactly the same as Quake 3 and Burnout is the same as Forza.

Just because the genre is the same it doesnt mean that the way you play the game is the same.
