In the end - IMO things need to change dramatically. i want to see FPS style fighting with more passives and limited skills that are activated by simple combos, mini-storylines for quest-chains in each area that actually seem relevant to the main storyline and that make you care about the people involved, NPC or player. Shorter and more enjoyable leveling times, with more time and effort being spent on end game content that continues to grow week after week to keep end-game (its not end-game but i'll just call it that) from becoming stale. Classes and talent trees that allow for an array of optimum builds so it seems more like you are creating the character the way you want, and not just building it into some pre-determined mould. Crafting skills with a gentle learning curve, but recipes that need rare materials (makes it easy to level, hard to reap the benefits, at least for higher level gear). Massively versatile customisation options for how your character looks and how his/her gear looks.
You're definitely going to want to look into Guild Wars 2.

Shoulda stuck with it, things have gotten much better since the "free month after purchase" expired. Still a few arseholes about, but no where near as bad as it was.

Actually there is a great deal of exploring to do in Rift, admittedly in a smaller world than wow, but still plenty of exploring. But you are correct about the rail ride and raid grind, questing is easily Rifts weakest point and gearing up for raids is just the same as any other mmo at level cap.

But there are elements that beat wow hands down, 9 specs per class, with one of them being a dedicated PvP talent tree, no flying mounts, zone wide events, better character customization, a "wardrobe" so you can cover up that unsightly clown suit in favour of items of your own choosing, better armour design (even the most hardcore of wow fanboys cannot deny tier sets have plummeted downhill of late) and more perverted armour for the lady avatars (if your into that sort of thing :p).
Hmm...really?

Because I've been kinda...thinking about coming back but I always had shivers about all the yelling for DBM. Glad to see that allot of these little turds are gone now.

Hmm...might be time to...try it again...perhaps...*ponders*

Because it's just World of Warcraft for people who don't want to play anything mainstream

Hell look into Guild Wars 1! That and DAoC have been the only two I've ever found worth playing.

It was only a matter of time before this turned into a "WoW clone" crap storm... sigh... so glad it's a culture I never participated in.

If anything, RIFT actually respects the playerbase's desires BY splitting the progressions. That way pvp balance won't affect pve balance and whatnot.
Nah, this is purely what many players think they want. It invalidates PvE gear for PvP, insulting PvE player's intelligence by saying "you just PvE so you can PvE moar!". Short sighted PvP oriented players want it to have some reward from PvP, but don't stop to think this makes PvP purely stats which invalidates any respect they could get from skill as skill is invalid. And PvE+PvP players like me? We just say goodbye. There is no reason for an equal PvE and PvP player to stay in such a system.

This is the end of that discussion, before it begins, because I've had the exact same discussion through a decade of this, and I'm fed up with the close minded people who try to refute it. It's old.
I'm not saying PvP gear should be useless in PvE or vice-versa, I'm just saying it's difficult to balance those without making them two separate games. I do understand what you're saying - why should you need to work up two different gear set ladders? Why should gear even be a -question- in PvP? I don't think it should be, and that's why I play Bloodline Champions and other such arena-combat games. I don't want to lose because his number was bigger than mine because he's played longer and gotten all the season's gear, I want to lose because I was outplayed. In most MMO PvP, that doesn't work that way, and most people doing only PvP don't -want- it to work that way. Some of them want only the highest of the high to be able to compete with each other, and everything else to be a roflstomp.

If they did matchmaking based on "Gearscore" or something along those lines, I would feel a lot better about PvP in MMOs. Otherwise it's pretty tough to out-skill someone who is out-geared. It's doable and that's the only way you'll get the gear and really become a wrecking machine, but that's why I prefer games where everyone has equal-ish gear, and whatnot.

Either way, my point was if they didn't make the game have two separate elements for PvP and PvE, damage, scaling, survivability, and control would all be really wacky, especially for glass-cannon classes.

It's World of Warcraft with some of the classes turned into talent trees for other classes, and random inconvenient invasions.

That's why i disliked it, anyway.

The monsters design were just 'meh'. I only played during the head-start and got to level 30, and I was just tired of seeing a massive army of trolls in an invasion who looked exactly the same and took an eternity to kill.

I don't like Rift simply because i don't like MMORPGs. I hated what WoW did to me. I essentially became a drone for nearly 2 years so no; MMORPGs are evil mind controlling mediums created secretly by the government in order to harvest our souls. Would you let them harvest yours? :O

It's called a genre for a reason - every game in it is going to be like the other.

*face + palm*
Thats like saying Company of Heroes is just like Starcraft, which is just like World In Conflict.
Or that Operation Flashpoint is just like Call of Duty, which is just like Half-Life, which is just like Team Fortress 2.

Even games within the same genre can still be very different from each other, though its interesting that it doesn't seem to happen all that much with RPG's, despite how different they could be from each other.

Eh, I played a trial version and admittedly didn't play very much of it because I couldn't get higher than level 15, so you could take my opinion with a grain of salt. Anyway, I thought it was pretty neat, but much of it did feel just like playing WoW with the extra gimmick of having Rifts spawn in everywhere. The Rift events themselves were fairly interesting, but I can imagine that they eventually get tedious or even unoriginal after awhile, because really one wasn't much different from the other. The class/talent system was interesting from what I saw, but seeing that I wasn't able to get far in the game, I wasn't able to experience too much of it, so I can only really say that it seemed interesting. It's not a bad game, but it wasn't really anything special... and was more like WoW than it advertised.

I won't play Rift for two simple reasons:

1) My current main MMO is Aion, and I'm loving the shit out of that still (50+ content).

and..

2) Guild Wars 2 will inevitably take all of my MMO time when it comes out.

That is all, on my end.

So rift the new MMORPG has gotten alot of bad and good word so why do people dislike it and why do you like it
Best make your own opinion on it.
Its like wow because its the GENRE.
Guild wars 2 and TERA are much more different from WOW but Rift is unique because of its dynamic world and class designs as well as a couple of other advancements like its looking for group system.
While WoW is the most popular title in the genre, there were MMOs before WoW. Ultima Online, anyone?

Yes I know that, EQ from my knowledge was the sub genre starter that we play today in 90% of mmorpg.

I got RIFT earlier this month in a Steam sale, and got a character up to level 30 or so, and I do enjoy the game, but I really don't like the quest design for the most part. The RIFTs and other stuff make up for that but still, the quests can get really dull after awhile. Haven't played it in a bit, I got distracted by Dawn of War II.

I have to say at a low level, it does a great job at drawing you in, which alot of MMO's seem to fail at but once I hit around mid level (level cap is 50) it kinda loses momentum.
