I liked the 8th one more, because I played it first. But FF7 became so pop because it had a wide advertising program all around the world (as far as I know) and that made it a lot of people's first RPG and therefore their favorite (nostalgia etc)

It's all about preferences and personal opinions.

I've felt that the storylines have gotten weaker while the graphics have gotten stronger.

In my opinion, 7 was one of the last ones with a great storyline and the first one with decent graphics.

There was an scene in WebZeroes that really captured the tension among gamers regarding FF7:

Alex: "That game taught me the truth about love and identity."
Nate: "No, that game taught gamers to cry over a ***** that deserved to get stabbed."
Alex: "You take it back."

A lot of people liked it because it was their first Final Fantasy, but personally I just think it was the best-made game in the series. I loved the materia system, the story was excellent, and the gameplay varied it up with different combat scenarios and fun minigames. It just had everything an excellent RPG should have.

my favorite ones are 8 and 10 but 7 maybe because it was first to be released on the ps1 and it pushed limits for the time.

You hit the nail on the head right here; personal preference. If you didn't like it, you didn't like it. What you like however is not the law of the land. Likewise other people liking something doesn't mean you will like it.

I don't like God of War. Do I go around questioning peoples decision for liking it? Nope. I understand that people have preferences, and they will often conflict with mine. Just accept that people like FF7, and let it be. If you hear something about FF7 and you wish you hadn't, ignore it. Pine for more FF 8+9 news, if it will help. Just let preference be.

Seven was the first Playstation one therefore, it was the first *fingerquotes*3D*/fingerquotes* Final Fantasy. Also, as was mentioned earlier, it was many people's first. I enjoyed the seventh but, my favorites would be eight then, nine. I think my first was actually the numberless Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest on the Super Nintendo and I would love to get my hands on that again

All the FFs before 7 were far greater. especially 4 and 6.
And for the record, there were a couple of FF games released before 7. Though I think it was the first where they didn't give you Americans the easy version :p
Well that is really opinion and I get sick of people saying all the FFs before 7 were greater they weren't. They are all just as good as each other it is all down to opinion which is the best. In fairness to FF7 it did popularise JRPGs in American and Europe. It is easy to complain about the game when it is Square to blame for spamming so many bad spin offs.

Still if you didn't like the original game fair enough but the earlier ones were not far greater. They were just different. FF 7 left the medievil settings of previous games even though it was going that way by the Steampunk FF6. The Materia system is one of the best magic systems in all the games. It allows for nearly any combination of spells and skills to be used while still limiting you to 16 which is more than enough.

I think 7 was the first JRPG that a lot of people played (including myself), so I think it's a nostalgia thing.
Personally, I thought that 7 was THE SHIT until I played 9, now I don't see anything special about 7.

I personally liked 7 the best as well. Yeah, it was my first FF game, loved it. Part of the reason so many people love 7 so much, I think is because of the characters. At first, you're saying "Who the hell is this spiky haired guy, and why should I care" Then as the story progresses, you start learning more about the characters. You really get to know all of your characters, and then Sephiroth comes in. A guy who's pure evil, who cares for nothing but the world's destruction. He comes in, kills a bunch of people, and eventually kills off one of the main characters. Basically, by the end of the game, you want nothing more than to see Sephiroth dead. As far as evil villains go, I'd put Sephiroth up there close to darth vader in badassness. The story plays out pretty well and if you can just get past(or even like) the whole "hippie tree hugging save the earth" crap in it, you pretty much like it.

VERY VERY TRUE! I miss the materia system so much. Definitely the best magic system in FF.

I've only been saying that for years now. 7's okay, but now I dislike it partly because of how popular it is. 8 was the low point in the series in my opinion.

My favorite's are 9 and tatics, and as for why people liked 7 I guess because it's the first FF game they played.
This. 9 is my favorite as well.
That is exactly my reason.
I don't MIND a "Meh" game. What I DO mind is when fanboys overhype the shit out of EVERYTHING to the point that "Meh" game becomes the symbol of all that is wrong in media and gaming, and the reason why companies like Square are allowed to pump out shat like FFXIII and FFVIII and still make lots of money.

Its the last generations Halo, like it or not. It made a genre that was unpopular to the mainstream and made it popular, except JRPGs were damn near unknown to the mainstream. Super Mario Bros. also can fall in this category.

6 and 9 where the best I think. Though, to this day, I believe that 8 was the begining of the end.

I think the gameplay of VII has been bettered by X and XII personally, although I loved the materia system. Also, I've not played VI and IX, which I've heard are very good. However, I belive that VII will ALWAYS be my favourite, for the following reason:

VII packs an emotional punch unequalled by other games. Not only are the big set pieces very dramatic, but the game also contains numerous quiet, subtle moments where character is developed. What's more, every character has, not just a backstory, but their own story that has an actual conclusion by the end of the game. You really get the feeling that every character has undergone their own personal journey. Perhaps as a result of this, the characters of VII resonated with me on a personal level far more than those of any other entry in the series, or any other game, period.

For the record, it wasn't the first one I played, either.

It's because FF7 was the games that MADE IT in N. America for Japanese RPGs. The story was made for a broader audience. FF7 was the first FF in the series to stray away from having magical fantasy lands as the major plot point. It was a futuristic, sci-fi, soap opera with swords. Name another game like it at the time?
Someone didn't play 4 or 6 did they. 6 had more sci-fi elements in it than 7 did. 7 just had a couple large guns, o wait, so did 6.
About FF4. The story may have had Sci-Fi elements but it was still your typical fantasy setting with Knight, Kings and Queens and a heavier focus on magic then FF7. And as for FF6 the World was steampunk but with an even heavier focus on magic. And the way society work in the game is comparable to the 19th century combining with high fantasy setting, with court magicians, emperors, and espers. FF7 was set in more of a "near future" setting with less emphasis on magic being thrown into your face and was heavier on the sci-fi elements than FF4 or 6. Sephiroth contributes to that by being a bio-engineered human, Shinra's weapon project in general contribute, and Vincent as well.

Cloud wasn't emo in VII, or even Crisis Core, he was just emo in Advent Children.... And I just don't care for driving games.
*does a double take* Cloud wasn't emo is VII?! WHERE THE BALLS HAVE YOU BEEN OF COURSE HE'S EMO JESUS CHRIST ALL HE EVER DOES IS WHINE AND FLIP HIS 7 POLYGONAL HAIRDO.
I can't call him emo in VII because he had legit reasons to be depressed. In Advent Children(awesome fights aside) he went from a cool, confident character who had overcome and coped with his messed up past to save the world, to a whiny emo on some non-existant "I want to be forgiven!" trip...

This is true, he did have SOME reason I suppose. Forgive me, it's been a while and I decided to save 30 bucks and buy a brand new (well, LIKE brand new) copy of FF Tactics and I haven't borrowed it from my friend in recent years. But it all boils down to the whole "Identity Crisis" formula that Square produced from 7 to 10. And maybe 6, but that was actually pretty cool with Terra.

Yeah, I mean, I'd be pretty messed up to if the main villain got inside my head, making me think I wasn't real, etc.

I'm glad they at least kept it consistent with Cloud. He's only emo in Advent Children. He was cool in Crisis Core. Well, what little you saw of him.

I love this scene! If only Cloud had a better voice actor, and Zack's VA but a little more emotion into it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKJwVbKWh5U
