It may be a simply stupid question, but when I think about it it's pointless. How difficult is it to grasp that people are going to disagree with you? Arguments can be fun, but only when your destroying your opponent with logic and sense, not when your fumbling around making nonsensical words like you use the palms of your hands to type.

It may just be me, but flamers tend to destroy the internet, so what's the point?

I fight. I fight people even knowing I'm wrong. Winning a losing battle is more rewarding than winning when you already know you have claimed victory.

Most of the time, the people being flamed are asking for it.

If you can't handle the heat, get off the internet.

Because it's fun to do

Honest answer really, Some people have no lives and look to fill there empty shell of an existence with flaming. Now if you provoke a flame war, Then you are nothing but a troll worthy of equal Damnation.

Anonymity makes jerks out of people.

Unless the trolling persona is their actual personality. In which case I shall hire a hitman.

There isn't a point, and it's not something thats come into being post internet either. People often say "You wouldn't be talking like that if we were face to face", fact is, in most cases, they would. Its amazing how many people give themselves an unfair advantage in life by freeing themselves of the need to make any sense. It's like they have a box in their brain with random words written on bits of paper, which, in the event of a disagreement, they delve into before throwing a fistful at you.

if im going to burn someone it's just so i can light my cigarette on them, but seriously i only flame someone who really deserves it, and usually it's just to bring their version of reality into... well... reality

Some people start one because they are bored and they have nothing else to do, and would watch people argue over trivial things that may not even be better than one another. For example

Spark the fires of a flame war. "OMG! PS3 SUUUUX!HALO 3 FTW! WHO'S WITH ME?" Yes, it's childish. Yes, it's puerile. Yes, in an environment filled with PS3 fans it's like shooting large fish in a thimble-sized barrel using hand grenades. But remember, you're being ironic, so it's okay. See how long you can ignite the flames for with the bare minimum input. We've managed about 5 minutes with only a single sentence.

i feel a paradox coming on where people flame about flaming
Wouldn't that involve saying that flaming is great, making that person a flamer, resulting in him getting flamed which is his favorite thing to do?

Depends on your definition of flaming.

One person's rational point is another persons burning volcanic inferno. I've never intentionally 'flamed' anyone.

I suppose people do it because they can't figure out how to express themselves in a disapproving way without resulting to whatever the hell flaming is.

I agree with you, I do indeed try my best to just talk it out normally using logic and well thought out arguments to dominate and smash all my opposition's arguments... these days it's kinda what I'm known for. However sometimes people can be really ignorant or obnoxious and rude and when they just keep pushing it and pushing it I can tend to get a little angry but I always try to keep an open mind, be respectful of the opinions of others and generally try not to make it personal.

Sorry, but typing "pwned" or "you suck" isn't quite the same thing as fighting. Internet arguments are no measure of courage or character.

Why hire a hitman? It's far more satisfying to do it yourself.
