Gears has always been an odd franchise for me. I could never engage myself in the characters or storyline enough to call myself a fan but at the same time I couldn't call them bad games because everything else was always so... competent.
However that said, it's sad to see such a successful development team such as Epic approach their franchise in the way outlined by this article. As Cliffy B said, they have finished the Gears Trilogy, it's done. Time to move on.
Some other dev teams would jump at the chance to do something different and take their franchise in a new direction. Although, sadly, not many of them. Alas, such is the way of the sequel defined gaming industry these days.
