Poe's law right here. I can't really be sure if this is cutting satire or if Cliff Bleszinski really is that bone headed.

Pro tip: we don't care about the chainsaw bayonet that much. It interrupts gameplay and is awkward to use, it's all show and no substance.

I wish I could say there was more to Gears of War than Chainsaws, but...
This.

Gears has always been an odd franchise for me. I could never engage myself in the characters or storyline enough to call myself a fan but at the same time I couldn't call them bad games because everything else was always so... competent.

However that said, it's sad to see such a successful development team such as Epic approach their franchise in the way outlined by this article. As Cliffy B said, they have finished the Gears Trilogy, it's done. Time to move on.

Some other dev teams would jump at the chance to do something different and take their franchise in a new direction. Although, sadly, not many of them. Alas, such is the way of the sequel defined gaming industry these days.

A non-linear RPG set before E-Day which allows you to walk around Sera talking to people? I'd play that!

Why not this:

Chapter 1: Battle at the very end of the Pendulum Wars. Skirmish with the UIR soldiers (using Mark I "Retro" Lancers) that ends with everyone being ordered to stand down, as the ceasefire has just been enacted.

Chapter 2: Jump ahead several weeks. Gears are making a routine patrol of a major city. Minutes later, the Locust make their first appearance. Things go to sh*t. Level ends with the player(s) being evacuated.

Chapter 3: Jump forward several months. Chainsaw Bayonet Lancers are introduced to player(s) prior to major battle. Continue game as normal.

x amount of in-between missions

Chapter X: Jumps ahead to Hammer of Dawn strike. Players either escape or are finally killed off, Halo: Reach style (not the most original idea, but would still be cool).

There. I've written you your Gears of War prequel. Where are my royalties?

Gears of War: now even MORE generic and lame.

Shine on GOW fans, you're beacons of light to modern gamers.

, neither setting would have made for a good Gears game.
Does he realize that the term "good Gears game" is an oxymoron?

probably not. I weep for humanity.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say this was the worst E3 ever. Is that too much of a stretch?

Never gave a crap about the chainsaws, rarely used them anyway. Should be about if they can make a great story out of them game, not the weapons that are the gimmick of Gears and not what the whole point of the game is.

The intro to Gears 2 shows fighting in the Pendulum wars and EVERYBODY has chainsaw Lancers. Did we do an ME3 style retcon for this or what?
Actually they all use retro lancers.
Hmm, you're right, I just looked back at the video. Odd, I coulda sworn I saw chainsaws.

perhaps the x amount of in-between missions could be detailing the COG's progressive push backwards into their nooks just before the hammer strike, and they could even use a few of the same characters, since dom, marcus, baird (im pretty sure) were in the army for a while before the pendulum wars ended. i think cole only joined up after E-day though

Wait, wasn't there an article a little bit ago about how Cliffy B. was upset that Gears of War has basically become a parody, or something along those lines? He might want to go back and re-read that, and then re-read the whole "chainsaws or bust" argument.

And even in the beginning when the COG don't have chainsaws, I don't think that it would take all that long to realize that they need something for "thick skin," and in the mean time the COG would have to improvise... which would mean Epic would have to get creative by coming up with something equally satisfying but not a chainsaw bayonet... oh deary.

You have a massive, well-liked IP set in place. I get not wanting to change the game up with your first departure from the trilogy, but you can't rule it out. Look at AC3, and 1313. You have plenty of space afterwards to build up fan faith in your post-trilogy abilities to go back to that period soon. But I would do it in one big jump, no increments.

So they can't set the game then because bayonets aren't effective against locusts, retro lancer aside isn't there another thing useful against locusts. It's on the tip of my tongue, it has something to do with the primary function of a gun. Lead comes to mind. Can't seem to remember right now...
