Because apparently the episodes are Half life 3, even if it's not named as such.
It's just calling the 2.3, 2.6 and 2.9 wouldn't sound very good.
Also if they did call it HL3 they'd probably have to put in new features and weapons, and Valve doesn't seem fond of changing much.

I was under the impression that HL2 Episodes was a way to use the same engine by releasing games based upon the Half-Life universe with the same arc.

Once they finish the last episode before a possible Half-Life 3. I will buy all of them in a bundle to play them all at once! The older episodes will be a lot cheaper by that point hopefully.

That way I will be able to experience them all straight through for the very first time in a marathon of pure awesome! :D
Hmmm, good point.

Tehehehehehehe! Ain't I a stinker! That was another reason why I decided to ignore them until they were finished. Unfinished stories drive me bonkers!

Most people are fairly sure that Valve are releasing HL3 next anyway. It's been in development for too long, they might as well make it a full release.

Likely because Half Life 3 will likely further the plot threads that ep 3 leaves dangling.

Also because we want a late night cuddle up scene with Alyx which is so coming in ep 3
(I wish)

Episode 3 will be a full game and I'm pretty sure it will be the end of the series. If it does come out and the prediction is correct, then there won't be a Half-life 3.

I don't know where you got the idea that it was only a small addition.

Must... suppress... urge to... spoil plot...

Nah, just kidding. I'm not like that.

Considering how long they're taking to make it, it'd better be full game lenght (and I'm not even a big HL fan). But if they choose to call it HL2Ep3 or HL3 or Suzy that's their problem.

I thought the point of the episodes was to release shorter games more frequently, and it's sort of worked, half life came out in 1998, half life 2 came out in 2004, then ep1 2006, ep2 2007, though it sort of stopped and we really need ep3 to finish off the series. As far as i remember these episodes were supposed to be in place of having a half life 3, which begs the question, what happens after episode 3?

Frankly, it could be called Half-Life 7 for all I care. As long as the next game in the series picks up where Episode 2 left off, I'm happy. Valve does this on purpose, and the longer it takes for them to get this series going again, the more I think Portal 2 is going to tie into the next game.

I guess because Half-Life 2 hasn't ended yet and Episode 3 will finish things up nicely before they can start on Half Life 3.

I would probably rather have a full game (Half-Life 3), but the episodes are very enjoyable.

They made HL3 pretty much episodic so it wouldn't take as long for release as HL2 did.....this has not become the case.

It's like a season's finale seeming to be delayed indefinitely, I mean imagine how many fans of the TV show Lost would have been pissed if its finale was delayed for god knows how long...probably a lot more pissed then when they realized it sucked...=/

I honestly think that they are both in the same. I think they are going to pick whatever sounds catchier to them, to be honest.

Personally I say Ep.3 that way it ties the story arch. So I can see why the shift to HL2 was needed because it's all new compared to HL1. But Half Life 2 follows pretty much the same theme

I don't care what they do, all I want is for Valve to finish the story of Half-Life. I don't care if they make the last of the series a novel, or a comic, or a strait to DVD movie. I just want to finish the story.

I also wouldn't mind it if people would stop being so oblivious, and notice that L4D2 is just a $60 expansion pack so they could focus on other projects.

I'm looking at you, Xbox owners.
