Why do people want Episode 3? Ep1 + Ep2 + x = HL3. Take a crack at it and solve for (x). Maybe that will clear things up for you.

I wouldn't see why the episodes would be Episode 3 if they're titles start with "Half Life 2".
Unless Valve said that the episodes were supposed to represent Half Life 3 I don't see why people would think that the episodes are Episode 3. Did Valve say anything about the episodes representing Half Life 3? If you know please tell me.

To everyone saying they'd rather have HL3 rather than Ep3, there are incredibly relevant plot points taking place in the episodes, and while I'd like HL3 too, they need to release Ep3 before they release a whole new game in the franchise.

Eli friggin' dies in Ep2. That right there makes the episodes imperative to the grand scheme of things, doncha think?

I don't care what they do, all I want is for Valve to finish the story of Half-Life. I don't care if they make the last of the series a novel, or a comic, or a strait to DVD movie. I just want to finish the story.

I also wouldn't mind it if people would stop being so oblivious, and notice that L4D2 is just a $60 expansion pack so they could focus on other projects.

I'm looking at you, Xbox owners.
If you're really that obsessed with knowing the end of the plot, here it is.

OT: I can wait.

We want episode 3 because it's going to continue where episode 2 left off. I'd much rather have a 15 hour game then a 6 hour episode but I really want to see what that thingy they where talking about in episode 2 does and how that one science lab from that other game will tie in. (I'm being ambiguous for spoiler purposes).

either one would be fine by me aslong as the game starts where or some time soon after Episode 2 ends.

They have said this, and they are. If they make another full length Half Life game after Episode 3, they'll probably call it 3, but the numbering system for game sequels is so royally fucked that it hardly matters. That would be like saying there are only five Resident Evil games just because the newest one is Resident Evil 5.

As long as it picks up from episode 2 call it whatever you want, Valve will still own my soul.
What's that Valve? Eliminate your competition and you will release episode 3?

I recall Valve saying that the episodes were essentially like a Half-life 3.

If they do make a Half-life 3, we'll kind of need to know what happens in episode 3 before we can understand what would be going on in it.
Not if they're one and the same. Maybe they're saving up Episode 3, Portal 2 and something else for a black box kind of thing.

Gabe Newell had a brainfart.
That's why they're called Half Life 2 Episode 1, 2 & 3 as opposed to Half Life 3 Episode etc.

e3 first then HL 3, and while on the subject matter...
HL2 2004
HL2e1 2006
HL2e2 2007
HL2e3 ?
See any problems? How big of a step forward was HL2e1 or HL2e2 from the original HL2 not so big there were some visual enhancements but the rest was as it was before. Baisically they have to make new levels and take the story forward, which is what they did with the first 2 episodes. Thats fucking it, how is that taking so bloody long. Make the damn episode 3 and then HL 3.

Because Episode 3 is the end of the current story-arc. HL3, if it ever came around, would focus on different events.

I.e. HL and all it's add-ons revolve around the Black Mesa incident, HL2 + Episodes revolve around City 17 (well, not so much now...) and the Combine.

You don't know how long they've been working on it; they could have started proper development on it yesterday for all we know.

Why are people calling the half life episodes the same as half life 3? They're more expansions than sequels.

That's true. It's the same with Grand Theft Auto games. Many games are like that. I don't see why developers make odd numbering systems for sequels. It confuses people like me. I didn't know that Valve said the episodes were basically HL3, and so I thought they were two different things.
