Why has this never been an FPS?

Umm... all online exclusive games?

But frankly, people say they want realism, but they don't really. War is hell, we don't want to pretend to be in hell, we want to pretend to be in Valhala where epic battle and glorious quests are all but commonplace. Do you really want to play a game where you do nothing but watch your friends die while you hide behind a wall of sandbags praying?

Because REALISM SUCKS.
Just because something is more realistic doesn't make it fun. I mean, why not make a war game where your main charecter loses his legs, goes home, and kills himnself? Sure, it's realistic, but does that sound like a fun game to you? I think games should stay fake. Borderlands was the first FPS I've liked in a while because it went for fun, not utter realism. In that game headshot isn't always an insta-kill which can be frustrating, but funny. If I wanted to play an overly realistic war game I would join the military.

Also, I am sorry if I offended anyone with my point about a soldier losing his legs and killing himself. I did not mean to come off as a dick by saying that. If I offended you in any way I sincerly apologize.

Because traditional narrative structure revolves around a protagonist who is central to every event and makes the story progress. It's not exclusive to FPS's. Seriously, read, watch or play anything some writer ever came up with and you'll get the same basic story. Something bad is happening because there's an evil antagonist of some description and YOU are the ONLY ONE who can STOP THEM!

Of course, I do like things that attempt to escape from traditional stories and play with the concept a bit more, so I wouldn't mind a far more existentialist style of FPS where you're just another brick in the wall. Although, to be fair, that seems to be a recurring theme in a variety of FPS war games. You're just a soldier fighting one of a series of battles that help bring the war to a conclusion. It says something that I don't even remember the names of the characters I play in those games. oO

Isn't that the basis of every multiplayer war-themed game?

That's it. Why does everything have to be an epic battle where YOU are the ONLY ONE who can stop the enemy?
Because in every other situation YOU are the ONLY ONE who is a player-character.
Yeah the game would be pretty shit if you just watched as your buddies killed the boss and you sat there and was like "Hmm... I could really go for a coffee right now..." *checks watch* "I wonder whats on the tv right now... I hope I didn't miss Scrubs, that would suck ba-Oh hey, you killed him!"
