Why hasn't it been made yet?

Its a very smart idea, (I'm not trying to toot my own horn here) but why hasn't Microsoft and Sony created a gaming network that lets Xbox Live players play games with people on the Play station network? The two companies might be enemies in some areas but this could be beneficial for both of them. It would make some serious Cash. Post comments if you think its a good idea or why its not, or what would be the outcome.

The outcome I guess would be players opting to simply buy the cheaper machine, rather than having to consider which has the best online profile, leading to far too many people using the crappy Xbox Live interface, and PS3 players becoming rare, and elitist. Maybe.

Probably because of competition reasons. I've actually thought of this myself, and, though it would be very awesome, there's close to no chance it will ever happen.

Something more likely that would be kind of cool would be online connection between PCs and 360s in-game, since they're both owned by Microsoft. Another problem with either of these might be that it would cost a lot and be very buggy, though. But I guess I don't really know, as I know very little about modern technology.

Because the integration of the two will cause massive tempers to ensue resulting in mass chaos and potty-mouthed 10 year olds. Plus they are rivals who in the competition are conspiring to constantly rip-off the other's idea.

the two systems work differently. Ultimatley one would have an advantage in online play be it from controller layout to connection speed or graphic quality (yes that really helps in dark areas or when sniping really far-off targets). It may work if it was an opt out of ability but then that would lead to different lobbies and ultimatley a split in players rendering rarer and less played games near impossible to play.

Sony and Microsoft holding hands, frolicking through the flowery fields, Kumbaya and all that? I'd honestly like to see it happen, but I don't think it will.

They weren't already?

All joking aside, though, that wouldn't work too well. Would cost a LOT just to implement as well as a lot of time securing legal/copyright issues. Besides, we already have the world wide web if you want to interact with people across platforms.

Would probably have alot of trouble with friends lists. I'm not sure on this, but I think they each use their own servers, so it would be very difficult.

It would probably also interfere with ads being pumped into your face.

I think cross platform interaction ought be steadily encouraged rather than forced too, I just don't think I'm ready to have MGS4 rubbed in my face as a mandatory experience. Not until Rising, anyway =P

Putting aside the 'It's Not Going To Happen' issue, I wouldn't mind seeing Xbox Live/PC integration, it would provide some interesting gameplay elements. Not to mention the fact that Microsoft runs what shows on my monitor and my telly... It'd make all kinds of sense to link 'em.
