Why hasn't Marvel cashed in on some MCU themed video games?

Considering the millions, or more likely billions, of dollars they have gotten from their movies, you'd think they could afford a game studio or two. Or four.

While they have dabbled in some mobile games, which of course were shit, I want to see some AAA level games. Remember that canceled Avengers game? It actually looked pretty good. I'm not so sure if it was designed to release alongside the movie, but here you go:

There was a Captain America game for the PS3/Xbox 360. It got some good reviews.

I'd like a Black Widow/Hawkeye 3rd person action/RPG with stealth elements and whatnot.

Movie adaptation games targeting adults don't really happen anymore. At least, I haven't noticed any recently. They'd do better adapting the source material rather than adapting an adaptation anyway, imo.

They released an Iron Man game some time around the release of Iron Man 2. It was actually pretty decent, although maybe not AAA. Honestly, any big AAA movie-game tie in seems doomed to fail unless it's a Lego game.

That game was terrible in a "so bad it's good" kind of way though, plus it and the Iron Man game didn't do so well, to say nothing of the Thor game which was abhorrent and forgotten (something Marvel is probably happy about).

I think the reason they've not make more big games is due to the fact that unlike their expose into movies and television, their attempts to brake into the video game medium have for the most part been an unmitigated failure. Given how they turned out (I'm pretty sure the Thor and Cap games where both flops) they probably figured it's not worth the effort to try beyond the potential of a new Lego game.

Probably because those buying these games are more and more often people who grew up playing games, and where thus savy enough to know the cancer blockbuster tie-ins are statistically. I know I wouldn't trust a game whose title is the same as a movie coming out around that time.

It's just too bad Marvel has gone on a crusade against it's already existing games. Deadpool is no longer able to be purchased new (it's even been removed from Steam for those who don't own it) and Marvel Vs Capcom is out of print with no plans for the long overdue sequel.

Oh there is an Avengers game, you just have to assemble it!

Ok in all serious, ain't movie related games suck 90% of the time (the only good one was Goldeneye and the old Star Wars and Disney games) since they are pretty much a quick cash in that is unless they are the Lego versions like Lego Avengers.

They want to promote their online isometric game? Personally, I'd definitely buy into a Marvel game that is more like DCUO. I'd love to create an original superhero in the Marvel universe.

They have been, with a game called Marvel Heroes. Making quite a lot actually, if Gazillion is to be believed. A hack and slash semi, sort of casual game with some pretty fun mechanics but the unfortunate problem of 'Too many heroes, half of them are crap in the current met- OMGAWD ARE U PLAYING EMMA FROST WITHOUT A FREAKING SPEED MINION AND NOT 7.5K OMEGAS GET OUT OF MY DAMN RAID AND DONT COME BACK UNTIL U'VE GOT ICEMAN OR SOMETHING JESUS'

But yeah, fun game. I play it. Can you tell?

Seriously, they have a very very shitty problem with power creep, now many of the most beloved heroes aren't getting the attention they need to thrive in the new environment versus the recently buffed Avengers who were only buffed because their movie came out recently, not because they actually needed those buff damage wise. Yes. Yes. You've guessed it. I want a fucking Emma Frost buff. I want an Emma Frost QoL. We've been asking for it for over a year now and only got minor changes, really. I mean Jean got like 2 qols before we got one - and people complained her QoL was crap its like 'thats not how it works, help us first then try and help yourself for a third freaking time I mean come on!' -....I don't have a problem.

Also, don't play this game if you don't like grinding. Cause there's a fucking grind. And rng. Wanna get a GotK? Get ready to grind Kurse like there's no tomorrow. Don't wanna grind curse? Hope you like Legendary Quests, do about 34 of them and you get a blessing! Trade about 12 blessings for a GotK...OH YOU WANT A DECENT ONE? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA GET TO REROLLING
Want a unique item - you know those aren't tradable, meaning you have to grind for those?

You....want a coat of the skull? Do you know what your asking for? May I suggest taking drugs and just imagining you have a CotS?

Do you have 7.5k omegas? Damn. Tough shit kid.

But the biggest gripe is the League of Legend's gripe: you have to grind to get heroes. You get these items called Eternity Shards. About 1 drops every 6-8 mins. Up to 10, if you're lucky. Up to 20, if you're using an Es potion that you have to buy. Some heroes cost 600 Es. Yes, that includes Rogue.

A few starting tips in the spoiler, if you're interested.

Completing certain story quests gets you free, cheap items. There's a list on the forums for it.

Run your cube shard terminals daily, you'll get a couple omegas and cube shards.

Cube shards, again, used to buy exp, rif and sif pots.

Returning to base/a hub zone will pause your in-game buffs. Using an ES potion? Return to base every ES drop. Use story mode for farm es. Don't farm es with a single target damage hero because you WILL waste time. Don't farm es until you've got at least 1 lvl 60 hero.

Don't prestige until you've got 200 percent experience boost from leveling other heroes.

The best heroes currently in the damage/solo play meta for 5/16/2015 are as follows: Hulk, Captain America, Venom, Juggernaut, Iceman and Rogue(with a particular build), meaning they have the lowest/cheapest cost of entry regarding doing high damage/just plain doing well at early levels. I suggest Captain America or Hulk for ease of use.

There are three different damage types. None of the top dpsers (assuming you all have the best items) are mental-type damage. All of the previous 'best heroes' I've listed are non mental. (CA, Hulk, Venom, Juggernaut - Physical. Iceman - Energy. Rogue - Mix of all three for highest known damage build.)

Other heroes who do good in solo play are: Just about everyone.

Personal favorites: X-23, She Hulk, Squirrel Girl, Moon Knight and EmMa FrOsT-

If you really want to level fast, get Cyclops first. He is a very good aoe targetter and the only hero that gives a worldwide passive buff of 10 percent bonus exp to all heroes through passive usage after hitting lvl 50.

Heroes that, if you don't have the correct build/knowledge of, you can ruin your whole game experience and/or heroes that are frankly boring: Nightcrawler, Rogue, Cable, Taskmaster, Loki OH GOD LOKI U NEED A QOL SO BAD.

People will tell you that ES is a countdown until 8 minutes, then they will drop. I have proven these people to be liars/idiots time and time again with a full 'special item find' built Loki made to grind ES and gotten ES as quickly as 5 minutes, 7 seconds after a drop. It's an increasing percentage chance that resets after a drop, not a solid timer.

Rogue does not look like 90's animated Rogue by default. You have to buy a costume for that. Yeah, I know. But if I put this as the first line in the post you would've stopped reading and downloading.

ES drops (quantity wise) are influences by a stat known as Special Item find or 'SIF'. You can stack this, for what little is actually matters. It shaves seconds off the timer and increases your chance of those oh so sweet 10 stack drops - but its not worth it. Trust me. The only reason I have an sif build was because I was curious and tried to make it work. And its on LOKI. Even if I built him/her with all the best items it wouldn't be worth it.

Note: The game isn't nearly as brutal as I've set it up to be. It's actually very casual. I just...OMG WHERE ARE MY EMMA FROST QOLS-

i) The Iron Man video game was one of the worst in the last ten years, Iron Man 2 was very slightly better.

ii) Disney Infinity already contains Marvel characters.

iii) Disney doesn't give a damn about video games (see EA Star Wars Deal, the untimely release and death of Epic Mickey 2).

iv) Disney/Marvel are trying to minimise the number of products that contain MCU characters likenesses. Sooner or later Downey, Hemsworth, Hiddleston and co are going to disappear, whether through age, money disputes or simply not wanting to do it anymore. When that happens Disney will want them gone and replaced as fast as possible with as little in the way of ongoing royalties or visible connection as possible. That's how Disney rolls.

The 2 Marvel Ultimate Alliance games are pretty good. I played them on X360, they might be available on other formats. You can design your own superhero team of 4 and can choose from all of the Avengers characters from the films, plus a few X-men, Spiderman, Blade, Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider and a few more.

But yeah, I think we need a new Arkham quality game for some Marvel characters. I think the key difference between the Arkham series and all the crappy Marvel games mentioned in this thread, is that the Marvel games have just been "get a basic game out quickly to cash in on the film release" whereas the Batman games have been treated as their own product, and given enough development time to reach their potential.

There were games for Iron Man, Thor, Iron Man 2 and, Captain America but I don't know if they sold well. In fact I think Iron Man 2 was the reason Sega had the rights taken away from them but that doesn't explain why another game developer couldn't have been given license to try their hand at an Avengers game. The footage above looked great for one thing but...you know what, if I remember correctly, there was a Wii U launch and, Kinect game that featured The Avengers. It didn't have anything to do with the movies and it looked like garbage so that could be another thing holding back production of The Avengers: The Movie - The Game.

Well they did. Iron Man 1+2, Thor, The Incredible Hulk and Captain America all got a videogame, they did one for each game until The Avengers came out.

I suspect they stopped because the games didn't sell overly well and received a lukewarm at best reception. Disney's cash cow relies of the longevity of the MCU as a quality brand that will drive ticket sales for more obscure and tangentially aligned properties. Having poorly received products attached to that has the potential to tarnish the brand, and they won't risk that for products which aren't making substantial amounts of money.

They know licensed movie tie-ins are crap, and probably haven't come up with a good original concept ala Arkham.

Because they don't need to. Videogames are a gamble at best. Makr a multimillion dollar Marvel movie, in 2 years and make hundreds of millions of dollars assuredly. Make a multi million dollar game in 3 years and it's 50/50 that they break even.

Well, Iron Man 1, 2 and Thor were dogshit. The Incredible Hulk game was average. Captain America was surprisingly an entertaining kind of open world game.

After Lego Marvel Heroes though (which kinda is an MCU game, it refers to the events of Avengers) was so goddamn amazing. I guess they didn't want to fuck with greatness?
They're making a second one that more closely follows the MCU, rather than 'MCU but with everything else as well' like it was in LEGO Marvel 1. Due out later this year.

With the introduction of the Inhumans, a superhero-themed RPG would definitely make some bank. Not an MMO, though. I'm thinking of something Elder Scrollsy set in the world of the MCU. I'd love that.
