Why hasn't this game been made yet?

While pondering X-com and alien invasions in general I came up with this idea for a game where you command an alien invasion X-com style with tactical combat, a strategic world view, and mother ship management. I think it could easily be done my pretty much just replicating a lot of the original X-com and just adding a couple extra features like terraforming and other stuff you'd need specifically for aliens colonizing a planet.

As I was coming up with this kick-ass game idea I realized that there weren't any games (to my knowledge at least) that had any depth with planetary invasions besides just clicking the "Invade" button. The fact that such an awesome idea hasn't been at least tried by anything with a profile at all makes me lose a good portion of my faith in humanity.

Wow. It does seem odd that it hasn't been made yet. Seriously there are 2 million and 2 space games out there and not a one where you actually invade a planet manually.

I'm still waiting for "Man kind has yet to recognize my genius!" But anyway I guess I could see the appeal of it.

The same problem as with why a Pokémon MMO hasn't been made yet, that would be some epic shit right there!!

Oh, I would play the hell out of that.

It would be cool if the set-up was that the invaders were essentially interstellar refugees looking for a home (think Battlestar Galactica or the Quarian migrant fleet from ME).

That would serve to explain why they aren't just bombarding the place into a cinder from orbit. They want to live there after the local pests have been eradicated. It would also explain why they aren't just sending in the Sectopods (or equivalent) straight off the bat. They're in rough shape from whatever forced them from their home and need to build up their resources by pillaging the planet before they can equip a proper force.

The humans reverse-engineering your stuff would also allow for the increased difficulty curve.

Sounds like we should take Spore and X-Com, put them in the LHC and turn it on. Explore space, take over planets, evolve your aliens to make them better at exploring and taking over planets.

Whoa that'd be something worth forking out cash over. Honestly, would it take a lot of memory?

inb4 Shut up and take my money!

Sounds like a pretty sweet idea, who knows, maybe an XCOM DLC later down the line...

Wasn't there a Star Wars RTS where you controlled the Empire and did things like this? I never played it so maybe it doesn't exist/doesn't go very in-depth...

Obviously you are not aliens but it might be close enough to scratch your itch.

It has. Look up PokeMMO and it should be the first one.
As for myself, an RTS-sort of thing where you play as the bad guys preparing to do battle with the protagonists (I'll come back to this)

right there with you on that. ive ofen wondered the same.. closest thats come to it has been destroy all humans.. it would take alot of tinkering to explain why your technological superiority isnt completely overpowering

cultural issue to use minimum forces for instance or even you are the advanced vanguard who has to achieve conquest with limited resources so things are ready when the main fleet arrives

not to mention your motherships need a pointlessly obvious weakness
I was thinking you'd need to be cautious and discreet in the beginning of the game so the difficulty doesn't ramp up too much. Imagine you sent all your best troops and gadgets on the first mission without doing any research on the planet at all, some extra procedurally generated factors like viruses you could pick up from the planet or air that rusts all your fancy toys could incapacitate all your forces. Even without that you could just be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of numbers the enemy throws at you, since you made such an explosive entrance. Also as a way to definitely increase the difficulty as the game goes on they would slowly be reverse engineering all your tech, even by observation if you didn't leave any of your stuff behind.

Edit:

It seems we think alike.

That looks pretty cool actually :)
But I was thinking of a little bigger project than just throwing the old games into a server :/
I have had big plans in my mind for a Pokemon MMO that would be awesome :D

Good thing its TBS then. Go play it! :p

OT: I came to a similar conclusion when thinking about DLC for XCOM. Its an obvious and awesome route to go :p (failing that, invading the alien planet as humans would be cool too.)

The planetary invasion system from that game should have never been created, it was awful. However the battles in space were good.

I want a mmo rts with every player starting on a world with a few other people and then working there way up to the space age it would be great with all the politics and back stabing people leaking the locations of enemy's planets or training centers

So you would make a solider there would be a reproductive system with every person having to go through training so you could if your smart wipe out your enemys next generation of troops by attacking there training center

a great ammount of fun would be have pity other races against each other so you can strike when they are down

YES! YES! and if you want, you can team up with others to get to space sooner!
