I guess developers think online gaming is where it's at these days. Online gaming is cool and everything, but I wouldn't take that feature over being able to play with someone who's in the same room as me. Seems like a step backward, in my opinion.

^^^this pretty much debunks the arguments this thread ever had. A game made that you pretty much CAN'T play without 4-player co-op. Count on Valve to come through for us!

I've noticed fewer games are being released with 4 player offline co op.

He said offline. Left 4 Dead doesn't have 4 player offline co-op. Only two players split-screen.
And Shotgun, I agree with you. I miss playing Crash Bash, or Crash Team Racing on the PS1 in 4 way split screen races and battles. Same with Mario Kart Double Dash. That had 4 way split screen AND and system link up, so 2 or more Gamecube's could link up.

No, because you cannot have 4 player offline co-op with Left 4 Dead. Only 2 players offline.

I had the exact same concerns as most people here. Some of the most fun I've ever had with video games was with four people playing a video game. Hours spent playing Phantasy Star Online was well over the hundreds.

As far as why modern games seem to be lacking this feature, I can't even think of a good reason. It probably just didn't seem that important to the developers, in the same way that developers can leave out seemingly intuitive additions to a game. For instance (I'm not shamelessly bashing the Wii here--I've only got a Wii, so its games are the only examples I know) no online mode in the New Super Mario game, or Wii-games with no pointer control whatsoever (like the flashlight in Fatal Frame 4 being mapped to the JOYSTICK instead of the freakin' infrared).

I think this is also why it's crucial for game developers to keep hiring new talent. The old developers--geniuses and giants they may be--seem to get a bit stagnant, or miss features any current video game player could recommend in a second.

ohhhhh, we're talking about split-screen-esque games? Well, in that case, I'd have to say that I simply hate split-screen :/ it's as simple as that. I remember playing games on the N64 and thinking "goddamn, does this suck that we have to strain our eyes and share a screen."
I think that it's disappearing because enough people noticed this discomfort.

Lack of good 4-player co-op games? how about a lack of good co-op games full stop.
It makes me sad that there's probably less than a handful of offline co-op games, even less of those are four player, hell, how many offline four player games are there on these newer supposedly "better" consoles? And how many of them are actually any good?
I think multiplayer died with the N64, it is truly the best system for multiplayer in existence. Online gaming sucks, especially when you live in Australia.

Microsoft wants to push xbox live and prevent people from not buying another console and another copy of the game.

Same reason why there aren't any games with bots.

EDIT: I stand corrected. It seems one company is defying Microsoft and giving us Bots.

Hurrah for EPIC games!!!!!

So my new question is, name one company besides EPIC that's giving us games with multiplayer bots.
Valve does, if you know how to code it right. I guess. sort of.

Wow..that's strange. Most people I know miss the Split-screen gaming. I remember having a few friends over and having tournaments together. It was amazing.

Also, I don't mind sharing a screen if it means I get to play good games with my buddies.
Plus, then there's games Like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2, great four player game. But yeah, these new games are too shiny so split-screen puts too much strain on these new fancy consoles. Think about how loud your Xbox can be when just playing single player.

Dude, totally. I love the epic gaming that people can have on one console. But I prefer games like, idk, Super Smash Bros, because it's fun w/out the split-screen. The old split screen games were awesome, and I don't think they could've been handled any other way, but it was always a hassle for me to play the game I love at 1/4 the resolution.

Not many games had 4 player co-op in the first place, OP. All I know of that really ever had this feature was Halo.

I don't belive I've seen many games with 4 Player Co-op and right now the only one that comes to mind are the Super Smash Bros. games. That however is diffrent as they don't need to slash the screen in half. It's bad enough that I have half the screen gone, I don't need another half taken away.

Left 4 Dead=2 player offline.
Also, name the aforementioned popular games.

There's still plenty of online 4 player Co-op, but local 4 player has been disappearing, though maybe with the new games they realized that 4 people on one TV is a recipe for annoyance, small screens and screen looking. Though it is damn entertaning at parties.

I only know of a couple of good ones online. Like I think I said before, the problem with splitscreen now is that the systems probably can't handle it, and the developers could care less.

I'm going to be honest I don't think there were ever a lot of 4 player split screen coop games. Even back in the N64 days. Can you even name that many?

i feel ya, there def needs to be 4P offline co-op. Got two brothers and its annoying that we have to switch controllers and one has to sit out a match while the others have fun.
