This makes me mad yet I will still buy it. It sounds worth my ten dollars.

I loved Mass Effect, and Mass Effect 2 but after watching this video I have cancelled my pre-order

This kind of thing just goes too far and is the king of money grabbing nonsense I just can't stand. All I ask is that you watch the video and consider the implications.

Edit: The video in short explains that bioware and ea are forcing you to pay for a game changing character those of you who who have played mass effect will realise the significance of this kind of Team-mate.
It is a Prothean
The content is only avalible for those who are willing to fork out for the collectors edition or pay extra for day of release DLC
While I can understand your frustration with all of this, I have to say that I think you're looking at it from the wrong perspective, as are a great number of people.

Indeed, there are a lot of exclusive DLC codes that come with the action figures and art books and collector's edition and everything else. But here's the thing: they're not selling you the codes and giving you an action figure/art book/collector's edition, they're selling you one of the previously mentioned items and, as a bonus, giving you a code. Does it sweeten the deal? Indeed it does...but the DLC codes are not the entire selling point. People that buy such things are super-fans of the series. People that actually want to collect the action figures etc etc. They're buying those items because they want the items. If they get a DLC code with it, kick ass. But that's not why they're buying them. I dare say that anyone who buys those items specifically for the DLC codes quite frankly deserves to be ripped off because they're a frickin' moron.

So you can look at it as them wanting to milk more money from the game by having people buy the collector's edition or pay to download the character. Or you can look at it as them rewarding the fans that are loyal enough to be interested in all the other stuff that comes with the collector's edition by adding a free character to that pile of extra stuff while also offering other people the chance to download that character if they really want to.

I've heard rumors that the DLC is just to make the prothean a squad mate and that he regularly appears in the game regardless. I really have no idea if that holds any weight, but if it does, I don't need him as a squad mate

I found a trailer for the next part of the Mass Effect Saga:

Yeah, that's not blowing things out of proportion at all. This is the same mission and character that were announced way back when, the only difference now is we know what it is. A single character and a single mission, call me crazy but I don't think it's that important to the story. "BUT IT'S A PROTHEAN!" Yeah well Legion was a Geth that turned the entire ME lore on it's head and I recall him doing jack shit...oh yeah well he released a virus that killed/brainwashed the heretics...AND YET THEY STILL POPPED UP AND WILL CONTINUE TO POP UP IN THE NEXT GAME! So yeah, overreacting and maybe I'm wrong, maybe it is a major part of the story...WE! DON'T! KNOW! YET!

Oh for fuck sake. If the DLC pisses you off so much then buy the game, just don't buy the DLC. All this "waah waah let's boycott stuff!" bullshit is just getting tedious at this stage.

If you want the DLC then buy it.

If you don't then don't.

Exactly why does this deserve a big ***** and moan?

Because this website is 30% drama queens that's why. Frankly these isn't even a new DLC, we knew about this one for awhile, now we just know the details, hell Bioware even said "By the way if you don't want to buy the CE you can still download this for half of the extra price of the CE" people are mainly going on about how this is a major part of the story, even though Bioware has said that it isn't, and these people know nothing about this character, other than he exists.

The lack of or overabundance of DLC plays no factor in my decision on purchasing a game. So long as they don't sell me 1/2 a game at full price and require DLC to get the other 1/2,
Well, thats the thing. The DLC character is a FUCKING PROTHEAN. A LIVING, BREATHING PROTHEAN THAT JOINS YOUR PARTY. Did you play the first two games? If you did, you know that is a big deal. That is the most important character you will ever be able to recruit into your party out of all the games right there, and EA is holding him ransom.

I mean, come on. A PROTHEAN!!! Fuck! A prothean! Its such a big deal, I dont know what else to say, so im just going to keep repeating myself! A PROTHEAN IN YOUR PARTY!!! YOU CAN TALK TO HIM!!! AND HES DLC!!!
This was my reaction as well. I didn't buy the Collectors Edition thinking to myself, "If the DLC squadmate is really cool I may pick him up."

By "really cool" I meant someone unique and badass enough to spend an extra $10 on. NOT A FUCKING PROTHEAN!

I will probably just watch youtube videos about the character's involvement in the game and hope against all hope that my wallet will tell EA this kind of shit is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

I dunno....I reckon it's more "We're the downtrodden little man and we gotta rise up against the big faceless corporations to stop these injustices!" than simple drama queen.

Anyways, I know I'll be buying the DLC and I'll be happier for it. It's only ten bloody quid that'd just be getting spent on booze at the weekend if I don't get the DLC. Besides, due to the fact that I managed to get the game on pre-order for ?36(GOD BLESS YOU AMAZON!) the price of the game plus the extra 10 for the DLC still works out cheaper than the ?55-?60 I'd have to pay if I bought it from a store or Origin.

And, I am going to buy Mass Effect 3.
I have enjoyed your logical, reasoned and well-debated reasoning and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
I'm sorry were you expecting him to write a thesis paper over why he wanted to buy a bloody video game?
In a thread dedicated to the reasoning behind the rationale behind one's purchase? Yes.
So you were expecting him to write a college paper over why he wanted to buy a game...am I the only one who thinks that this website is way too freaking dramatic?
Your never alone there, but that's a different story for another time.

OT: Want to know why I am not going to buy it? I don't want it...

It feels like EA are going for a monopoly over the gaming industry and it does put me off from buying anything with their branding. I mean it won't stop me from buying games I like how ever, unless there was so many people that EA would report huge Financial losses.

I have never seen such douche-baggery stem from a game before. Ever since ME3 has been announced you loser elitist fan boys have done nothing but cry. WAAHH BioWare's CEO hurt my feelings... WAAHH Diana Allers has big tits and that offends me... WAAHH theres optional DLC and that offends me for some reason...

Grow a f*cking pair, BioWare doesn't give a rats ass if you buy there game or not. While you are sitting there fapping on March 6th, me and the other millions that will buy are going to be having fun. Bioware doesnt care if there revenue is $1,000,000,000 minus $60.

Now because I'm an achievement hunter if this "From Ashes" has achievements then I guess I'll be getting it, if it doesnt I wont bother. ME2 had tons of DLC's like new outfits or weapons, and did I get them? No. Did I whine like a tw*t that they were there? No.

Don't like BioWare games? Try russian roulette, but dont forget to fill up every chamber!
You're my hero :D

I want to see everyone link their STEAM XBLA and PSN accounts in their Escapist profile when they say they won't be buying a game or boycotting a company ect. I bet a lot (at least some) of them will buy it anyways.
no prob, I'm not getting ME3 and my steam account is linked to my profile here :p go a head an check after it comes /end sarcasm /pretending ME3 is coming out on steam at all.

Actually, I like the idea of more characters being added as DLC. I would have really liked if all the extra ones I bought for the Disgaea games had a bigger (or any) part of the actually story too. I don't buy into the idea that this is anything other than extra added bonus content for a game that is probably already filled with great content. At least that's what I hope anyways.
to be honest, i agree with you, DLC characters are generally ok, like Sheal, she was funny and tough and all that, but ultimately, had no real point as, the golems where more or less a foot not in the DA lore.

Portheans or any other race that is constantly referred to, or hinted at having to do with the lore in a major way, are a totally other matter, it'd be like Capcom getting off they're asses and making Breath of Fire 6 (LMFAO ... like THAT'LL happen XD HA!) and making the dragon powers DLC you have to pay for (hint: its a core game play mechanic) or Square making er ... >.> a good game? i guess (sorry got nothin there ...)

You guys know that the Prothean is a character for the Collector's Edition right?

And people are bitching because EA and BioWare are giving people who don't buy the CE a chance to get that same content with a price tag. Stop complaining already.

Its something meant as insentive to buy the CE, you are being given the chance to get it even without the CE. How can people not understand this?

I am going to buy Mass Effect 3 because I enjoyed the demo and I am looking forward to the conclusion.

If there is all this extra DLC giving new guns, art books etc. etc. I don't really care, I don't have to buy it, I'm not being forced, so I won't buy it.

It doesn't seem any different to Shale DLc or any of the character DLCs for ME2 or DA2 or anything.
The difference is Shale wasn't huge in the story. A prothean is something fans wet themselves over.

OT: This is a huge kick in the balls for us fans, like huge. Even if I did preorder the Collectors Edition, this is horrible. This is the last game I am buying from EA, ever.

Zaheed and Kasumi were pointless, you couldnt chat with them. So unless the Prothean is a proper team member then im not gonna waste my money on it.

Yes. This Dlc is annoying, but you would be more annoyed if it was only release with the collectors edition only. Its your choice whether to buy it or not, but i wouldnt NOT buy a game over something so pathetic as DLC.

As many others have said, you guys realize this is simply part of the collector's edition right? As in another piece of swag for people who drop the money on the collector's edition? What you guys are doing is the same thing as if you were complaining that you aren't getting the N7 patch, robotic dog companion, art book, or the N7 hoodie. I totally understand how ridiculous launch-day dlc usually is, but this isn't one of those cases. How about we work to make gamers NOT seem like entitled brats for once?

Ehhh...

Origin alone affected my decision on the game.
This. I have plenty of other things to play without being weighted down by a clunky piece of
assness that was worse than Steam on it's first year.

Mass Effect 3 is a somewhat loss but I have other less obnoxious things to play to fill the void.

That actually makes a lot of sense.

The guy is an important character, there's no way he's not in the vanilla game. I'm guessing, like you said, it's just to unlock him as a team mate.

This doesn't bother me, I've never really understood the amount of rage on this website whenever something like this turns up.

Maybe I'm just too mellow.

Or maybe I've let the corporations 'brainwash' me, whichever you prefer.
