You know what helps? Remembering that music is just music. Nothing makes an elitist snob cry like perfect indifference.

I hate all these pretentious kettle retards, sittin around being all black and shit.
Fascinating.

Do people sit around thinking about these things, figuring out "well, I only like this genre, this genre, and this genre. So that's all I'll listen to. EVER!!!"
Yes. This is how all metal works.

Ya know what... I don't mind most of the whiny indie bands... but I HATE the hipster scene.
Probably most anything scene since...Scene.lol.

Not gonna lie - for someone complaining about what judgemental, douchey music snobs hipsters are, you sound an awful lot like a judgemental, douchey music snob in this thread.

I like to call that "The Hipster Paradox"

Anyways. Most of the people i talk to about music are people from uni (I study music), so I manage to avoid all that.
All this hipster on hipster violence must come to an end!

*smiles* The world is full of idiots, and anything short of a "great purge" won't change that.

I never saw the point in them. My music conversations go like this:

Person: "What music do you like?"
Me: "Anything really... anything good"
Person: "Eh ok"

Even if they did come to mention a band that i like i know bugger all about music so it'd whittle down to the 2 of us mentioning random song names and describing our opinions with a single adjective.

I am stuck in my musical rut
friends say i am closed minded with music but i am a creature of comfort when it comes to music.
So my friends have learned not to talk about music to me
but i am not a asshole when it comes to the music i listen to.

If you have two people talking about bands they both love then the conversations can be interresting, and I find when I'm talking with my more musical friends about the way certain bands compose their music, guitar riffs and more specific things that don't just involve "Yeah I like band X, you should listen to song Y" the conversations are certainly more interresting.

Although that said, I'm still happy to have the standard "what music do you like" style conversation, if you're getting to know someone, in my view it's pretty important to know what their music preferences are, or if they aren't into music at all.

Why don't you harden the fuck up and speak with honesty?

You're acting like you want to sound interested in these persons' tastes and at least not ignorant. Do you need their approval? Must your preferences match theirs so you can be as uptight and douchy as they? Or do you think you'll be best friends forever?

God damn. Man up. Shoot straight. Tell them what you're fucking thinking.
He does have a point. Just remember that there are many ways to tell the truth and some are taken better than others.
