I have been a wow player for a little over a year now and i have no plans to quit playing any time soon. People often say that the combat in wow is boring and takes no skill, well its an mmorpg and a damn fine one to, and i can't think of any mmo where grinding is fun. Being good at wow is not just following a rotation. The skill in wow is the concentration and cooperation to be able to work with your raid or arena partner(s) to out think your opponent whether it be non player or player "by knowing what the fuck to do". The reason why people play wow for years is not because of some addiction i hear all the time it is because the game is fun!
Downing a boss you have been struggling on for weeks or raising to the top of the arena charts with some of your best friends whether they be online or irl is one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I have ever had. a lot of wow criticism is that because of the fact the game is not fun unless you are max level but just because you are too impatient to level up does not mean that wow is a bad game! And i am yet to play a game that has been so entertaining that i could play nonstop for over 20 hours.

Not liking mmo's is no reason to single out wow as being a poorly made game that takes no skill.

Reason why i feel so strongly about wow criticism is the fact that it is a part of my life and i have been surrounded by bigots that play the trail for 5 minutes and say to me "wow is for fags its just right clicking!"

Lok tar ogar for the horde! (i play alliance to be honest but only because of friends)

Edit: People having there own opinion of wow is fine but it is the people with no experience with the game or the genre that needlessly insult it and the players.

Hate to say it, but you've been <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/experienced-points/6110-The-Secret-of-WoW>beaten to it. And nothing against you, but...his writing is a little easier to follow. ^^;

Besides, it's perfectly all right to criticize WoW, or even dismiss it as not something you enjoyed or were interested in. It's not perfect and people have different tastes, after all. Still, considering all of the hyperbole about how addicting it is, or how monotonous the game is, and how anyone who enjoys it is a lifeless freak...yeah, I sympathize with this thread.

I personally have no interest in WoW, but listen anyways, people are going to criticize games, no matter how much others like them, if you like it then take solace in that fact and ignore the people that trash on it.

So no one should criticize WoW...because you like it?

I'll admit that people can be a bit unfair when it comes to criticizing games they don't like, but it shouldn't bother you. Relax and enjoy your game.

FFXI takes 1000 times the skill of WoW. WoW is about how much you can do in a given time while on a game like FFXI, it's about timing. Anyone can spam but it takes patience for skill. I admit FFXI isn't the best MMO but where WoW fails, it succeeds.

I have plenty of legitimate reasons to not like WoW and there is nothing you can do about it. They are opinions after all.

Everything that ever does, will, might, could or could not exist should be criticized to some level or degree.

MMOs not being exempt from the concept of everything.

I tried WoW and had fun for a bit, but my friends change servers all the time, so I eventually quit. It was fun, but honestly, it's a game, and it's subject to criticism like any other game. Just because you like doesn't mean others have to, and just because they don't like doesn't mean you can't. But you're right about one thing: people who play WoW put up with all kinds of pointless bullshit. I never told any one except my friends that I played because I didn't want to have to go through the shit a lot of players go through. You shouldn't take criticism as a personal stab at you.

I hate it in the same way an alcoholic hates alcohol, because it makes me beat my wife and molest my children in other words I hate what it does to me not the game itself because when I play WoW I just can't stop...

except that WOW does have addictive properties and for that matter video games in general do, you can find the research in about 20 minutes using your schools library database search (finding a reputable source through google has been a little disappointing)

but I don't play wow because I don't like grinding, I played for about a month and jsut couldn't do it anymore

Without criticism, WoW would not have evolved as it has. Without people pointing out the blatant flaws in Blizzard's little gem, Paladins would be whining about having to heal, just in an ice-covered castle instead of the lava-filled cave. Warriors would be the only thing you could use to MT anything. Rogues would... well, Rogues have always been overpowered in PvP, and it'd take a severe change in design philosophy to uproot them.

The point is, criticism is necessary, especially in a constantly-evolving game like World of Warcraft, in order to keep content from becoming stagnant, keep classes from being too imbalanced, and keep everyone content and engaged (you can't make MMO players happy, not all at once, anyway.).

In addition, saying people shouldn't point out the flaws of something you like shows moral weakness on your part. If you're convinced that Warcraft is good, and you have valid reasons for thinking that, then you ought to be able to form a cohesive argument to combat naysayers when they arise. The fact that you're declaring here that no one should ever decry the downside of the game means that you are, quite possibly, insecure in your own decision to keep playing.

I disagree with skill required. Before the expansions PvP did take skill... when I quit you didn't "have to know what the fuck to do" you just had to scattershot, aimed shot, arcane shot and hit the bastard once with my weapon, and I would kill him. Literally, if he/she needed any more I would multishot. My multishot had a 50-60% chance on crit, so 3-4k dmg (when that was about 1/3 health) instantly. No skill, none. What-so-ever. My gear beat the other guys, I could do 10k damage in 5 seconds, while they can't move.

Thats why I stopped playing, and I refuse to go back, even though I can still feel the addiction a year and a half later. Raids went from intense 20-40 man dungeons to 10 man max. My favorite pre BC dungeon (Zul'Gurub) could be 4 manned in Burning Crusade. Pathetic, and disgusting. I clap for Blizzard for making a very successful game, but I will never play it again.

Oh yes, original WOW PvP was soooooooooo fun. I remember how an Arcanite Reaper gave warriors an instant 1 shot against casters, and how Shaman were nigh unkillable requiring the 'skill' to press a single button labeled frostshock. I remember how healers were completely and utterly useless in pvp because there was no way for them to survive more than a hit or two against even the more basic geared of dps class. I remember when the definition of pvp might as well just been 'ganking' because there were no battlegrounds, and I remember how even when those battlegrounds were implemented it could take hours to get into a single match which may or may not be grossly one-sided due to server imbalances.

I'll confess the old Southshore vs. Tarren Mill was entertaining and the original Alterac Valley was a hell of a lot more fun than the new version, but those aside original Pvp was absolute rubbish. Methinks your nostalgia is getting in the way.

And Karazhan 10 man was some of the most fun raiding in the game when it first came out. True it eventually became a grind, but then that's the case with all raids and instances.

Which is not to say the game doesn't have a heap of flaws. I'm not even playing WOW these days out of boredom. But when people get all misty eyed over the original game before the expansions I can't help but give a little sigh.
