He's the Arbiter.

I understand you may not be familiar with it.

Just forgive me for being a corrective ass this once.

Whole-heartedly agree with you there. I love Halo and almost everything about it. The books have gotten a little boring though and if you read The Fall of Reach then the end to Halo: Reach was like a slap to the face. Cortana was already with Master Chief and the Pillar of Autumn was not on Reach during the attack and the Covenant did not stealthily invade Reach! It was A FULL BLOWN ASSAULT.

Halo was great until the fucking flood came into the game. A perfectly good Sci-fi game, awesome setting, and most of all interesting enemies (an intergalactic theocracy made up of a coalition of different species? Yes please.)

Then they go and throw it all down the drain by tossing a bunch of thoroughly uninteresting alien zombies at you. Not even interesting looking zombies either, they were literally big bags of brown.

Ugh.

*sobs* Halo fans! and not one super hater! This is awesome.

Everything you said is what I love about Halo.

I've lost track of all the different maps that I call my favorite.

MC's voice is basically the first thing about him that I liked and the fact that he doesn't speak much makes him seem more like a badass. He has one liners people would kill for.

Not many games get books or even cartoons. I haven't read the books yet, I still have to finish another series before I get started on the Haloverse and I liked Halo Legends. I got to see other Spartans POV and not just Chief's. And where Chief did come out he made me fall in love all over again.

The scenery is beautiful. Colorful and detailed, not a lot of games have that. Not just shooters but a lot of other games too. Everything is muddled, if you aren't playing a RPJ there isn't a lot of nature around and swaying grass and charred rock adds a lot.

The gameplay is the best I've ever seen, the weapons are diverse and so you actually use more than a pistol and an automatic. The music is literally epic. You are and can imagine going on a journey to that music.

I love Halo, everyone says the story sucks but they really never even try to understand it.
This is so true it hurts. Even without the expanded universe, the story to the series is quite good. It has a lot of depth that I think a lot of people don't see simply because they refuse to look past the existence of space marines and a supersoldier, as if the very existence of things that have become cliche (largely because of Halo in the world of video games) invalidates the entire story, which simply isn't how these things work.

Nobody hates Halo. Not really. They hate what she's become.

In all seriousness, though, I think it's less that gamers have animosity towards Halo and more that they resent its imitators.

I actually kinda enjoy the Halo games, I particulary like the Covenant.

I don't know why, I just like the whole gigantic, varied, religously zealous "slave army" they got going on...kinda like the Imperium in W40K.

However, if there is one thing I really hate, it's the majority of the named human characters, they all just annoy me so much, especially Cortana (yes I know she isn't human but she's on the human side) who I can't stand.

Oh, and most importantly; without Halo, there would be no Rooster Teeth.

People just like to hate on Halo because it's popular.
I don't think anyone who isn't being a troll can honestly call it "completely awful."
I'm not saying that it's for everyone, but anyone with half a brain could at least understand its appeal, and respect the opinions of those who enjoy it.
Anyone, good points.

It's weird, movie bob and yahtzee complain endlessly about brown/grey shooters with no weapon or enemy variety, where the environments are all essentially the same, but then the latest Halo comes along and isn't any of those things, but it still is "just another fps" according to them. It just points out that as much as they'd probably deny it, they are actually pretty big game hipsters, hating the mainstream because it's mainstream.
This is my biggest complaint about game critics in general.

They play Call of Duty/Battlefield/Rage whatever and complain about how everything is grey/brown supergritty and the guns are boring or whatever. Then they deride Halo for having orange and purple aliens and unrealistic sci-fi weaponry. Make up your minds, guys!

I like Halo. I think the gameplay is very well-designed, in the way it forces you to make very quick decisions without breaking the sense of flow (do I grab the pistol because my plasma rifle is out of charge, or try to hold on to this rocket launcher just for a bit longer in case I need it at some point?).

The set design is also really impressive. Stepping out of that drop pod in the first game was amazing.

I think Halo get's loads of flak for creating regenerating HP, but also for it being and exclusive and Microsoft flagship.
I think Halo ironically, is one of the less generic shooters out there, as it's gameplay is like no other shooter out there, and the world is substantially different.
One of the main point people pull up is the regen, but what other game uses the EXACT same health system as Halo, COD, nope head shots kill you instantly. Don't get me wrong, it did start the regen trend, but not many games if at all are willing to copy it in the same fashion.

The main thing that I only see as generic is the characters, but this was because they were one of the originals.

One thing that I would like to add is that each of the 3 main halo games, have added something that was evolutionary or perfected to the gaming world, such as the health system, multiplayer, and forge.

Well also for the Regen Health, ironically only Halo 2, and 3 had it. All the rest had medkits.

I think Arbiter is a pretty cool guy. Eh kills aleins and doesn't afraid of anything.

:p

OT: Yeah I pretty much entirely agree. The increase in threads like this makes me more happy. Is the Escapist getting less bitter? Or does the concurrent increase in "why is Half-Life so great" threads mean it is just switching around its opinions and staying just as bitter? Find out... AFTER THE BREAK. *cue adverts*
