Why I think Slenderman is a popular horror icon right now.

Slenderman seems to me like a representation of the faceless corporate entity untouchable yet having an incredible amount of control over our daily lives. The business suit is an obvious one which is accompanied by the uncaring totally anonymous face then his very long arms represent the international reach of globe spanning corporations. He is controlling and inescapable just like some mega-corps you just cant get away from no matter where you go they have their chain store set up right there. Just a ramble.

I really don't think there is anything deeper there, someone just up a creepy character and people liked it, I highly doubt that whoever thought him up was setting out to make an evil corporation metaphor and even if they did I doubt even more that people read into that. Slenderman is popular because he is creepy and intriguing.

Yea he freaks me out because you don't know what he wants, what he can do or why he's even doing any of this. Also he blends so nicely into so many places and that doesn't help at night when you think you saw something.

I have never seen him as some corporation figure.

I always found him scary for an entirely different reason.

He can, literally, appear anywhere and everywhere without making so much as a sound. You could walk around your house, suddenly turn around and BOOM he's standing there at the end of the hall you just came down, watching you. You can't stop him, you can't fight him, you can't hide from him. No matter what you do he will find you.

That is fucking scary. The disproportionate limbs, tendrils, and crippling madness upon merely seeing his visage are all just icing on the creepy cake after that. (Or whatever his commonly agreed upon powers/abilities are at this point.)

What I like about Slender Man is that in many of his stories, he has a hidden agenda. He can appear in rooms at will and wipe people's minds, yet he rarely kills anyone and lets most of his victims go. He's like the anti-slasher villain. So what is it that he really wants?

Well if you watch EverymanHybrid he does have a couple of murders, well at least hes there when they find the remains, but you never see it and he just leaves bags of gunk so how he does that is even more horrifying.
