By the way the greatest sport is soccer, and the greatest American contribution to world sport has been Basketball. I love football, but it's weird it doesn't translate well to other countries. Just one of those cultural things.
That's not really a fair criticism of football. Basketball wasn't very popular in the rest of the world either until the Dream Team arrived in the Olympics. I think the problem is that the rest of the world just thinks of it as another version of rugby, when it really isn't.
Just stating the facts: I love football, I recognize the greatness of world football(soccer), and love basketball, which the world has embraced. My favorite athletes of all time: Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Joe Montana. And Rod Laver. are we digressing from the thread subject? Nope, these are great American sports heroes, and one Aussie!

Odd guess- January 20th??
I have trouble sleeping with the prospect of Obama becoming president, it is the worst thing. No it is not because he is black,I know that is why most people voted for him,I even considered voting for someone twice as Black as Obama.
Can I ask why? I'm not an American but I followed the election pretty closely and I thought he was the best candidate. I liked that his focus was Economy orientated not war orientated.
He doesn't know what he's doing. Let me just say, maybe this will help, but my political philosophy would fall most into a socially conservative Libertarian. He wants to make America Socialist. Why should someone who works hard for their money give it up to someone just so everyone is on the same level? The redistribution of wealth they call it. Places where there is Universal Health care have higher taxes and inferior service. I think he also wants to raise the minimum wage and that will put more people out of jobs because the companies won't be able to hire as much. The thing that strikes my moral core most is his support of post birth abortions.
So, he wants to raise taxes for people with higher paying jobs to help fund health care? That's not sarcasm, that's a legitimate question.

And, what exactly do you mean by 'post birth abortions'?

Why should someone give up their hard earned money unless they choose to on their own free will?
Because Laissez Faire does not work.

I can provide plenty of support for that if you want.
That doesn't answer the question. I'll be damned if I work my ass off and then have to give 50% of my hard earned money to some welfare sponging jackass, because he doesn't feel like working.

Just putting it out there. The original idea for basketball was thought up by a Canadian professor working in America. Americans made the sport popular but they didn't create it.

Laissez Faire is the economic principle of free enterprise. The government takes no action in the operation of businesses or the welfare of it's citizens. It is the most extreme form of capitalism on the social economic scale. Which means no welfare, worker's comp, minimum wage, minimum age for work, FDA or other socialistic ideologies. As for an example, I'll direct you to the industrialization era and third world labor. If you want an actual text, read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair.

Edit: changed political to social

The answer is quite simple really.

Because in spite of the fact that the vast majority of the world looks down on this fictitious american steriotype of a gun toting environment hating gay bashing idiotic backwards power obsessed overly militant group of malcontents with nothing better to do than pick on the rest of the world the vast majority of us can and do shrug it off and go on about our normal lives without any major prejudice or feelings of hostility. Funny thing is that I have known people who have come here from various Europian nations and every one of them actually found the average american to be more hospitable, courtious and genuionely friendly than anyone in their home nation. Now this is England, Italy and Germany we are talking about so take that for whatever it means to you.

The point is that we are awesome because we can take the bullshit of the rest of the world crunching us down and stereotyping us by saying we all act like the bottom 1/2% of our population without really holding any ill will in return.

Also Alton Brown.

I'm from America and America is not awesome in any way. This land was stolen from the Native Americans who were nearly wiped out and so very few remain. America is just one big bully out for global dominance.

You don't have to quote economic terms to me. I never said Laissez Faire was a good ideology to have. Its an extreme form of economics and extreme forms of anything is not good. Conversly the exact opposite of Laissez Faire isn't good either.

I've already read The Jungle. The first half of it was alright, but the second half was a pathetic attempt at socialist propaganda. And in case anyone has forgotten, everything in the Jungle took place almost 100 years ago. The U.S. has kept almost none of the policies from that time period.

Anyway that point that I was trying to make in my previous post is that the average American (regardless of IQ) thoroughly enjoys their freedom and usually will not give those freedoms up (unless they are astronomically stupid).

Also, the U.S. isn't any better or worse than any other country, and I'm getting tired of all these damn America hating threads. I'm surprised the Mods here don't delete them with the same gusto that they do for anything else that attracts this many trolls.

I will say this though, the U.S.'s time as a superpower is coming to an end. We are trying desperately to hold on to our power, as all superpowers are wont to do.

As for the healthcare part, isn't Cuba's far better than your's, Britains, or anyone elses for that matter?

how so? According to the WHO, we're ranked 34th overall. We're first in quality, selection, specialization, and a few others. we're ranked 54th in fairness. Healthcare prices here are supposedly too high for a good fairness rating. By extension, competition in the healthcare system isnt fair, either.
I think really I was just pushing for pro cuba there. I believe France and Italy should be first and second, am I right on that?

Ho hum, why do we bother. I am enjoying everyone bashing on the good ol USA. Why bother defending against such idiocy? Why is America so awesome? I will tell you. I have everything I will ever want, and I earned it with my own hands, never having to ask anyone for a hand out. I have never lived in fear of the enemies of my government, nor have I ever feared my own government. I have traveled the world defending this nation, and seen those nations that are apparently so much better than mine, and found them lacking. I have never been negatively affected by any media or government corruption that in any way decreased my happiness or standard of living. Is my nation wealthy? You bet, and it shows in the %GDP that my government gives to all of you. Are my peers wealthy? You bet, and it shows in the charitable donations that they give to you, by far the most per capita of any nation.

It is easy to throw stones at the Ivory Tower, but at the end of the day, you all live in it's shadow...
That made me laugh. You guys over extend your budget each year so much so that your health care system is rubbish and your education system lacking. Your country was the butt of every nations jokes since George Bush was first elected. Who the hell are you to say that your country is so much better then everyone elses? America is not without its flaws. Nor is any country.

Sorry, I'm not usually an America basher by any means, I just found this guys post so pretentious it made me ill.
yeah, I can see how our health system is so broken, since I know of TWO people with no insurance and no jobs that are getting absolutely free health care. One a free kidney transplant, the other free care for severe diabetes. The broken health care system argument is broken. it's called medicare and medicaid, and our government is the largest health care provider in our nation. That argument is carried by rich folk who wouldn't know a down on their luck poor person if they tripped over their dead body. Besides, practically every major medical advance has come from the US, so enjoy! But please, continue to bash, I love being on top, looking down at all of you! Have a nice, American influenced day!

The Outstanding Public Debt as of 06 Jan 2009 at 12:47:45 PM GMT is:
$ 10,640,644,915,744.11

The estimated population of the United States is 305,410,748
so each citizen's share of this debt is $34,840.44.

If that's what it takes to be awesome, I'll stay in Blighty.

America is not awesome because it lacks 2 very important things:

The NHS and the BBC.

Mmm free healthcare and Dr Who.

Oh and for every medical advance coming from the US:

Come on over. We like people, despite what you may have heard. :)

Americans, as a people, are different because of our notion of the 'melting pot' culture. Are we physically or socially "Superior"? Well, errr.....NO.

Do we celebrate our achievements? Yeah, and we should.

I think too much is made of the Americans that go around spouting off their opinions as if they were facts, and our media-based culture being thrown in the faces of everyone else world-wide probably doesn't help.

Our government is just as corrupt as any other one, but our system has established checks and balances that keep it in check. The fact that Americans' political mindset is that of a pendelum and we don't vote in three Presidents of the same party in a row also keeps it level.

America's government is no more corrupt than it could be for a nation its size.

As far as Patriotism and Fanaticism goes, Nationalism is in between and we are nowhere near the level of 1936 Germany.

America has plenty of artists; the nature of art is different, nothing more. I worked at a family-owned art gallery for 8 years. We like our stuff. :)

Lastly, no one likes "blind bravado", but you said it best when you mentioned that most of this came from the 13-year-old American kids, etc. I am 29 - most Americans are proud of our nation and our accomplishments.

We like other peoples, because America is formed of other peoples that have come together for a shared vision of freedom and prosperity.
Very nice answer, leave it to the escapist to find some well informed people with coherent arguments. My opinion is mine and only mine, no one needs to share it, however, as most opinions, it can change I spoke only out of my personal experience in regards to the american country and it's people if I'm mistaken please do forgive me, but, just as I said, opinions are our own and no one elses ;). Still, your answer enlightened me a bit and I may start to think diferently...someday ;P.

I quite like the "you can accomplish anything" optimism american culture appears to have. Here in England most people are pesimistic and cynical. Including me.
