First, before I have anyone trolling this post about how I "Just don't get anime", you can see by my avatar that I'm guilty as well. Code Geass ftw!

Anyway, about 80% of the avatar's I see are anime characters. Any idea why?

Because people think that knowing what anime is or saying the word anime makes you cool.

Nerds like anime.

Duh.
What is it with people and stealing my thoughts today? I picked my avatar to match my slightly misspelled user name, but I'll probably change it to Revy any day now.

Go to any social network and you'll find a lot of anime lovers. It's a nice change of pace from Western cartoons and some are actually *gasp* for more mature audiences!

Because they are like books, tv shows, and GAMES in the sense where nerds flock to them in fandom.

Funnily enough, I don't read/watch very much anime compared to some people. I dunno, I've always liked Western cartoons better as a kid. In anycase, anime is popular here because the gamer/anime lover demographic overlap a bit.

If its popular people will at something in their life look at it. I have watched probably no mare than 15 anime things. No idea what was going on. The only one that comes to mind is that Halo Legends anime episode. The one were the spartan falls off the pelican. Actually since I know very little about anime I can't be sure if it was anime. Take a swig from the nearest drink for every time you type anime.

For some, it's just another TV show with a difference language and culture.
For more, anime also gives some good story ideas and often some intellectual thoughts
(When they are not fighting more giant robot wars)
For others, it's the massive amounts of hallucinogens and lol's accumulated along the way.

It is? I always got the impression the escapist community just likes quality things in general and anime has things of that nature (although your mileage may VERY much vary) Personally I'm not crazy about anime as a genre. I'd like to see more interesting things from it but I wouldn't know where to look and it's quite possible that what passes for entertainment most of the time is a little too tied down to the cultures personal taste in delivery and execution rather than something that actually has a credible chance of being universally appreciated.

Anime is popular in young, libiral communities.
Are you suggesting that the escapist community is mostly liberal? You better be careful with that word I think it's loaded.

It's a fad, it has been a long time coming. The US, and then the other plebdoms, is adopting a mirroring fad, where they nerd over Japanese stuff, while the Japanese have been nerding over USAn stuff for how long, 40 years?

It's a foreign culture, easily accessible and easy to claim to be a fan of since they are cartoons with better visuals and a plot. Most of the appeal comes from the world-view and sensibilities of a foreign culture. Once you become accustomed it becomes preditable and boring, revealing the horrible secret that it's the same kind of pasty dribble that haunts the western media, but the paste was made in japan.

2026 is going to be all about the eastern european animation, just you wait.

That was an Angel going to kill the person she was sent to protect.

But here is a better one:

That is from the same guy who thought of that series. and between me and you it's flat-out Hilarious!

The reason I like anime I grew upon Dragonball z and Sailor moon.

I'd be up for that. Ever see the version of Winnie the Pooh which came out of Soviet Russia? It's pretty darned cool.

OT: As others have said, the escapist is full of nerds, and nerds like anime -- and one look at my avatar should tell you I'm guilty of both being a nerd and liking anime :p

Better question is: Why is MLP so popular with Escapist readers?

OT: It's just one of those....things. Hell if it keeps people entertained then I don't see an issue.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I have. nosoviet. I can also vaguely remember one film with a big eared gremlin and an alligator/crocodile, and another, jungle themed one, with a monkey, giraffe and tucan. I think they were all from Soviet Russia.
