Why is Catherine getting such great reviews.

I have not yet played this game but i have watched and read reviews on this game as well as a few gameplay videos.

I am very interested in the story of this game and the unique style of which it is told. BUT the gameplay that i have seen of this game looks quite boring and repetitive.
If perhaps i cannot afford Catherine at this moment might i be better off watching Death Note while playing Minesweeper and then rating it 9 out of 10.

If this was an anime series without the gameplay (obviously) would it get great reviews?
I almost feel as if people feel obligated to like this game in order to be a "real gamer" hence why IGN gave it 9 out of 10.

I prefer a review like the escapist one because it does not give the game a score but explains the game to the viewer.

Please do not take this thread as a hater thread, i am very interested in what you all have to say especially the people who have played this game.

OT: It's a puzzle platformer. That's all that really needs to be said about the gameplay.

Because the experience as a whole is great to these people, myself included. The last time I played a game with the ironclad tungsten balls that Catherine has was Killer7. I actually love the puzzle gameplay, and the story is fantastic...

I strongly say play it. The demo is no indicator of what you're about to get. The block puzzling is frenetic, the story is gobsmackingly amazing, and the localization might be the best I've ever seen in my life. Try the full game for two hours, then decide. The demo was a bit disjointed.

A mini-rant that doesn't pertain to you at all, OP:

I'm kinda tired of the generalizing people make about its gameplay. It's as easy for me to say "You don't like Catherine because you're too insecure about being seen with a game that seems to wear its sex appeal on its sleeve" as it is for haters to say "It's Qbert with tits" or whatever. See, I can do it too. Honestly, if I were to continue the generalizing such haters make, I'd say people baselessly hate on Catherine as a duty to be a "moral gamer" in a stupid attempt to be some upstanding ambassador of games.

Is it THAT hard to believe that people play games for the entire package, rather than individual parts? I'd NEVER play the individual components of Catherine separately, but together, combined with the aesthetics, you got a fucking sexy and outright solid game that makes zero apologies and rewards you greatly.

You don't need to like specific games to be a real gamer. That's what some people like to tell themselves for self gratification. Catherine, while I definitely might enjoy the story, is just not my type of game.

Not playing one certain game shouldn't label you as a "non gamer".

Its has a good story but dull gameplay for me. I just hope people don't treat it like the next coming of Christ just because its a "different" game. Not to say its a bad game, but nothing mind blowing or game changing... well in my view.

What i meant by that non gamer comment is when i told people i was not getting Duke Nukem Forever because i was fairly certain id be disappointed by the result i got a lot of hate comments saying i do not understand that generation of gaming which is complete bs.

I enjoy the game because the puzzle sections are challenging and fast-paced. Especially boss stages that will have you on edge until the end of the level.

Plus, story's nice.

Indeed comments like that are completely wrong and annoying as hell. Like I said in my post I kind of hope this doesn't repeat itself in Catherine. Just because I don't like the puzzles and think the game overall is good but not great, I apparently somehow "don't get it" and "have no real taste and appreciation."

God I hate people and that mentality.

Wait. So you haven't played it, the only things you know about it come from reviews and gameplay trailers, and you've already decided it's shit? And not only that, but you are taking those judgments based on nothing and questioning the judgments of professional reviewers so have actually played the game? Do you not see what is wrong with this picture?

How about you actually play the game before deciding it's shit, hm? What you've said here is like reviewing a movie based on the trailer, except even less inaccurate because movies are passive experiences that only last an hour or two. You are basing 15 hours or more of interactive gameplay on a few minutes of passive images.

I would imagine it's boring and repetitive in the same manner all puzzle games are 'boring and repetitive' in that the core mechanics of the puzzle must remain relatively stable.

If you change up the mechanics too much, then the game would feel disjointed, the gameplay would lack cohesion, and it wouldn't feel like you were getting better. The challenges wouldn't seem harder, just novel, which would defeat any sense of progression.

The only real puzzle game that comes to mind for me in Kickle Cubicle. The core mechanics were essentially the same throughout "Kick block into water to make bridge to get item", but as the game progressed, new mechanics for moving blocks and new enemies to impede your progress were introduced to keep the gameplay fresh and ramp up the difficulty.

Well, a lot of people simply like it because it's a pretty hard game, has an interesting story, and is simply a new experience. The only real gripe I have with the game is the values bar, but that's it. If you don't want it because it doesn't look like something you'd be interested gameplay-wise in, then whatever. I'm not gonna make or loose money if you do or do not buy the game, so go buy whatever games you really want and don't let people pressure you. All I can really suggest is to try it out if you have some free cash...where as you can choose to not buy it and simply go do whatever you want.

Wait...does that seriously say "Family/Puzzle" for the genre?

I haven't actually played the game, but I would not want to play this around children based on the trailers and gameplay footage I've seen.

Um...this is exactly what he just finished talking about. He said it's a good game, he just doesn't like the gameplay/puzzle games in general and doesn't want to see people over worship it or lash out at him simply because he didn't call it "THE BESTEST THING EVER"...like you just did.

I imagine it's getting good reviews for all the reasons the reviewers are pointing out when they tell you it's good

Here's a question, do you normally like puzzle games?

I don't like FPS games myself, so all those games look like boring crap to me, reviewers have to look at games as if they're a fan of the genre.

"Family/Puzzle" is probably one of the selectable genres in The Escapist's database.

I suppose that says a thing or two about puzzle game norm, and how Catherine doesn't follow it.

It's all a conspiracy that followed your inner thoughts (Because Reviewers are Norse and Greek gods mixed into one) to make you buy a game that you don't seem to like.

Or you could just play the puzzle sections and make your mind then. Puzzle games are more fun to play than to watch.

Note*I like that new Captcha (Solve media). It says "kiss me".

Wow. Are you sure you quoted the right post? You didn't read my post at all, did you?

What I said has absolutely nothing to do with that. I was simply pointing out that it's rather ignorant of him to make ANY sort of critique of Cathrine if he hasn't even played it, positive or not. I don't care if he actually thinks the game is shit, I just think it's ridiculous that he thinks he can decide how repetitive a game is if he hasn't played it himself.

Screw reviews. If you don't want to play a game, just don't play it. But don't go around saying you know how it plays when all you've done is watch a few trailers and read some reviews.
