Oh, and about it being a grindfest, I've never been bored with any of the stuff I had to do. I've been playing the whole game through quests and instances, and it's still entertaining. There are "kill X of this monster" quests, but even these I've enjoyed. I love the quests like "Defend this person from enemies attacking across the bridge for 8 minute", or "Escort this person from point A to point B (The area is packed with monsters) within the time limit. Also, fighting BAMs (Big ass monsters, this is actually an official term used by En Masse) with friends is amazing.
I've had a chance to experience Tera with my friend, and although the combat is better than I had expected, no. It's nothing special. I had the same amount of fun playing this as I did play WoW near the end of my subscription. I've yet to get into a beta event for it, but Guild Wars 2 looks so much more promising at the moment. It's breaking more ground, reinventing how we not only play MMOs but how we think with them.

Dynamic events aren't new, neither is non-targeting combat. But never has an MMO try to perfect these concepts to this level. I've yet to see an MMO reward you for exploration the same way Elder Scrolls does. I've yet to see an MMO where you can do whatever and still reach max level no problem. I've yet to see an MMO bring this level of personalization to one's character.

If Tera came a few years ago, I'd be praising it. But it didn't. It's coming out now, and it's not going to last in my eyes.

Even if a good part of their breaking-the-mold plan is introducing 12 year old girls in short skirts to the landscape, its a start.
Think that's actually kind of a thing in Korean MMOs. Playable characters that look like (and most likely are) little kids.

Them Koreans.

after trying the open beta i personally like it even though its not that dissimilar from other MMOs of, "kill X or fetch X" for one difference though and i'm sure you've heard it before already; the combat system. now while it might be a moot point for those that didn't try your list (Dragonsoul, DDO and Spellborn) Tera is a refreshing breath of fresh air for someone whose had nothing to do but WoW for the last 8 years >,<. now don't get me wrong WoW is still a good game but as we all know its old and getting stagnant; the same old, "auto target and spam ability" has really destroyed my interest in the game. I gave SWToR a try and while better is still basically a, "WoW in outspace" system that while impressive I still found uninteresting.

now the combat system around Tera is nothing new but it is for a majority of people who have tried your list OP but wasn't impressed by it (tried my hand at DDO and even the starting area was a snore for me). Different strokes for different folks I say, me i'm having fun with Tera Online and i'm gonna go with it. my rule book is, "if i find something entertaining i play it, if I don't find it entertaining I chuck it," which is the reason WoW and SwTOR are taking a back seat. True I might grow bored of Tera someday thats a given but for now i'm having a blast with my slayer =D

No because of the art style and character choices.

Seriously, there's furries and there's pre adolescent girls in their underwear.

No.
