Why is everyone so down on Fallout 3?

Everytime someone talks about the fallout series any praise they give it is almost always accompanied by the phrase "except Fallout 3" why is this exactly? Did I miss the memo or something? I thought that game had great atmosphere and brought all the fun of a post apocalyptic wasteland with an awesome 50's vibe.

In fact it was because of my playing this game when my brother owned it that I got my own console when New Vegas came out, without it I never would have gotten into this whole gaming business

so what gives?

What? It is universally acclaimed by critics and fans alike. The only detractors are some long time Fallout fans that hate how the game is inconsistent with lore.

Fallout 3 is a good game. But most people who say that have played the older, much better Fallout 1 and 2.

You'll tend to find that the majority of those who dislike Fallout 3 played Fallout 1 and 2 to death. The complaints aren't entirely without merit, given the radical shift in the way FO3 plays compared to its predecessors.

That, and some inconsistencies with the overall lore.

I've noticed it particularly on this site. Funny enough, it seems these same people love New Vegas though. They're like the opposite of me, I think Fallout 3 is easily one of the best games I've played on the ps3 whereas New Vegas was easily one of the worst (it was practically unplayable).

The main plot is moronic much of the time and it is inconsistant with the other games. (this is coming from someone who really likes the game)

Basically this. Although FO2 is still my favorite in terms of story and freedom. Never played FO1. I loved FO3 but I hated Vanilla. I played my FO3 for 200h or so but it was HEAVILY modded. I hated the difficulty scaling in vanilla. It made no sense. All it did was make the game tedious to the point of boredom.

NV was relatively awesome coming out of the box. Still modded it to hell and back =X

New Vegas fits more into the general 'theme' of the Fallout series. Fallout 3 seems... unconnected except for names, really. It was a awesome game, but it could have very easily been called different and that would have shut up a lot of critism.

Yea, that's because, as people said before, Fallout 3 was inconsistent with lore, but Fallout New Vegas was not. Hardcore Fallout fans generally consider New Vegas to be the proper 3, and 3 is just a spin off you pretend never happened.

Fallout New Vegas is better than Fallout 3. But Fallout 3 is still a good game. And without Fallout 3 as the fundamental building block, there wouldn't be Fallout New Vegas.

Also, you really gonna need a "next coming of Christ" magnitude game if you want to beat Fallout 2. So, basically it ain't fair to compare Fallout 2 with the rest. That's like comparing Final Fantasy VII (or VI) with the rest of the series.

It doesn't fit the timeline.
It has many,, many inconsistencies.
My BIGGEST strife with it is that it's basically cool things strung together with a piece of string, or in this case a bombed road.
The landscape is as if only 50 years have passed.
They try to make their own game, but use existing lore to lure the fans and fail at it.
Megaton - A town constructed around a giant bomb. The remains of the white house. A city of children. An android that wants to be human, has a tissue transplant and a brain surgery.
These are just cool ideas they had, strung together with a piece of string. Nothing to do with the atmosphere, the setting... Yes, you can do this kind of little easter eggs once in a while. The plunger room from Fallout 3 was amazing. But still, this whole game was like that. Just cool sh*t.

I've never played Fallout 1 or 2, but hate Fallout 3 for entirely unrelated reasons.

I loved both Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

Never played the older games in the series though.

I do understand why the fans of Fallout 2 dislike 3 so much. I think it's a lot like Resident Evil 4 and the Resident Evil fans. They acknowledge that 4 is a fantastic game but it's just very inconsistant with the rest of the series and is pretty much a completely different series with the Resident Evil tacked on.

3 was my first Fallout game and I loved it and at first I just didn't get the hatred but since I've gone back and played 1, 2 and NV to death then coming back to 3 I do understand their dislike for it. It's just very different and the BoS just don't match up with their appearances in 1 or 2, the story is very silly and often doesn't make sense and their isn't as much choice as there are in the other games. Personally, I feel 1 and 3 are very similar in tone. They are both very dark with little bits of humour dotted around whereas 2 and NV where much more focused on the humour.

It's not about lore inconsistencies. You don't need to have played Fallout 1 and 2 to realize that Fallout 3's story is absolutely terrible.

There is that too. The main story was one of the worst that I've played through.

Because the story is complete shit.

That's why I don't like it.

Also many inconsistencies with general Fallout lore.

I'd say it's mostly because how dark and srsfaced Fallout 3 was
the gameplay, freedom and all that was great, whatever, but it felt unconnected from the humor and charisma of the original 2 and to some extent, New Vegas
also, to me, the writing
it just didn't even come close to the masterful writing the original 2 had
especially characters
the only character I gave a fuck about in Fallout 3 (outside mine, the playable one =P), was Cherry
and that's because she was the most attractive of the game (not really saying much, all the women looked manfaced)
