So before I start this thread, yes this is on XBl, however my buddy has a PS3 which I play extensively and the people there are just as much of an asshole as the people on XBL.....they just have deeper voices.

So I was playing MW2 the other day with a full party and we were all listening to my friend tell us how his house was broken into a few hours ago (Don't worry he's fine). So we're all listening when we find another full party and before he can get a sentence off their entire team immediatley starts talking trash. We didn't even say a word except a few chuckles when one of them would say somewthing like "Hey fucking ******, i'm gonna spank your ass like I did your mothers last night." We're not assholes, so after a little bit of that they start making fun of our clantag, GG. They apparently couldn't tell what GG stood for, or maybe they had never uttered the phrase "Good Game". So the game finally starts, and we kicked their ass, 7500 to 3650. In the lobby they are STILL talkig trash, or at least they were before we muted them. So, Like we always do after a game, we sent them a message saying good game. And they fucking backed out. No apology or anything, they just couldn't be around anyone who wasn't an asshole for some reason.

So I ask you fellow Escapists, why everyone such a dick.

EDIT: Yes this is on MW2, but I have been meaning to start this thread for a while because it's not like people are only assholes on MW2

If you want Yahtzee's explanation

Normal person = Total dickwad

If you want a better explanation (thanks to Penny Arcade I might add)

Normal person + anonymity + audience = Total dickwad

I'm not sure, but how did you win 7500 to 3650? I wasn't aware you could get 50s....

Sorry, that's bothering me.

Because, POPULAR online shooters are full of dicks. On the other hand, unpopular online shooters are full of nice people.

Case in point: CoD and Halo's communities are full of assholes.

Shadowrun, on the other hand, has quite a nice community.

And F.E.A.R. 1...the community is kickass. In a ranked match lobby, I was able to get everyone in the match to agree to a melee only match. It was a blast.

People can find a reason to be angry about anything and feel they need to tell you so. If they get annoying Mute them. End of story. And if they get worse, report them. It's what it's there for

Microphone+anonimity+lack of retribution=Absolute freaking dick who will push every little gripe and insecurity they have onto you because they can and there's nothing you can do about it. that's about the long and short of it.

OSN and XBL's admin systems are pathetic, people who behave like that on PC games tend to get banned within seconds. Sorry to be a self righteous pc dick but it's true. XBL and PSN needs some kind of user based admin system that works immediately, even if it just prevents specific players from joining a game you're already in (or prevents you from joining a game they're in).
An 'I do not wish to play future games with this user,' button is the only way I can see it working, since there's no fair way to actually ban players, maybe players getting a lot of those flags on their account could be investigated. The current system takes too long if it works at all.

On XBL people really don't have to worry about what they say and who they say it to. So they tend to act like dicks because they think it makes them cool.

A level of anonimity & the fact they're nothing more than a streak of piss in the Pissific ocean.

You can go up to someone in the street, give them as much grief as you want, and it's a good chance you will be buckled on the floor in less time it took you to say "American/Limey twat". Do it online and hey(!), you get away with it 99999 out of 100,000.
However, it still isn't right you saying everyone is a total prick. I've been in games where I find more friendlyness than I would with people from my area, and in most cases beyond. Not everyone you meet is willing to go through entire campaigns with you after wrongly joining your game, just for the sake of helping, or for that matter willing to give a huge in-game sum to a noob player or guy/girl in need (I've seen the former).
My friends list was made on games like Gears of War, something where you had control over a match & those who came. Me and friends would make a game, randomers would join, we'd have a great time. If we got a dick, he/she would be warned by me or a mate and they'd usually shut up/stop glitching or leave. If they continued, they'd just be kicked and they'd all recieve a file complaint. I actually got 3 players banned through that, so it does occassionally work.
As I said, I got half my friends list of games like that, had some of my best gaming moments with them and a fucking good laugh. Keep looking and playing, you may possibly find them.

Anyway, if you want my advice for Modern Warfare 2, do what I do on the 360 version... MUTE EVERYONE

Your three basic choices when dealing with a rough spot are:
- Change it.
- Love it.
- Leave it.
First is pretty much impossible in this case, second obviously doesn't apply... so do the smart thing (like I did) and say no to online gaming.

Human nature.

Could screw with them. Online sociology is a game in itself. I like to see how creeped out I can get morons without actually insulting them.

Though more that likely I'll start tapping the mute button.

I remember playing a MP game on the PC and was surprised at how civilized the players were.
I was playing a round of 1 v 100 recently and managed to get the #1 spot during Extended Play, which made a player feel compelled to send me a message which read, "fagget." Stay classy Xbox live! :)

Like HELL it does!

Oh, and to add my own thoughts to the discussion? People are dicks on a massive online ANYTHING because they can and because you can't do a thing about it.

Jesus, who are you people playing with? Am I seriously the only person who rarely encounters people like this? I have no problems with both the Xbox Live and PC community. I think you guys are just taking a few bad experiences and judging the entire community based on them.

I personally ban all use of microphone speak in all games I play.
Disabled them in L4D. Can't stand those @$$h0les there.
So you disabled microphones in a game based heavily on teamwork? I have to say, that's pretty dumb.
