Because, POPULAR online shooters are full of dicks. On the other hand, unpopular online shooters are full of nice people.

Case in point: CoD and Halo's communities are full of assholes.

Shadowrun, on the other hand, has quite a nice community.

And F.E.A.R. 1...the community is kickass. In a ranked match lobby, I was able to get everyone in the match to agree to a melee only match. It was a blast.
This is the same for all games I think. The popular games are generally full of dicks whilst the less popular games aren't, they're full of people who are there to enjoy the game part of the game, not the trash talk. If you want games with good comunities play older games.

Just today I was playing MW2 on my friends Xbox, some guys were being dicks, I was the party host, I just bailed forfieting the games for those fags.

People as a whole are stupid, ignorant, and arrogant. If you add in the confidence boost that you get when you are on xbox live, you have a recipe for disaster.

There are no consequences from it, thats why. You can literally do nothing to me if I'm a dick to you over any multiplayer system, especially if its within the rules (corpse camping etc).

It's a huge reason I'll never play multiplayer on a console.

I'm not a dick, honest.

The TF2 servers I play on are filled with nice people. And WoW is probably better than most, considering how many a-holes that play that game, it's been really long since I met a complete a-hole there :)

Speaking of MMO's. One of the few places where there are consequences to your actions. If you make enough people angry, and it can have negative backlashes, at least sometimes.

Because they get bullied at school and it's the only way they can get at someone without being thumped for it. Shit themselves when shouting at a real person but put them in front of a screen and you watch their bollocks grow.

There's nothing really that can be done about it unless you own the server, except weather the storm. Fighting back only encourages them, but a perma-ban sorts it out completely.

You repeated yourself there by saying the same thing twice.

OT: Whenever people start acting like foul-mouthed idiots on any online game I'm playing I just aggravate them right back. Not by swearing and trading insults, but by just spouting whatever random thoughts come into my head.

Jerk Player: Oh man! I totally owned you! Fucking pussy ass ******!
Me: Did you know that epileptic seizures were once cured by performing a radical bilateral temporal lobectomy?
JP: WTF?
Me: Mike Mangini holds the world record for fastest single stroke snare roll.
JP:...*leaves*

I find that the Counter Strike community as a whole aren't that bad, and that's a hugely popular game.

The vast majority of the online FPS community is held to gether by racism, homophobia and "Little Person" syndrome sufferers.

Don't tell me you're surprised that this conglomeration of asshats are offensive?

"Hey fucking ******, i'm gonna spank your ass like I did your mothers last night."

Arse hole or not, I'm going to be using that one as a come back. I'll exchange the word "******" though.

If you want Yahtzee's explanation

If you want a better explanation (thanks to Penny Arcade I might add)

Normal person + anonymity + audience = Total dickwad
All too true...

This is why I hate playing with random people on the XBL areas at times...and why I generally avoid it. It just ends up with 11 year olds who, just because you cant see them, believe they can trash talk and make a total annoyance of themselves...

Its sad when you think about it. All people want to do is unwind not listen to people who whine and swear every other statement.

Now there's your problem. Call of Duty games are particularly popular with the "Man these graphics are awesome! Hey, what button skips cutscenes?" crowd as opposed to the Escapist's prominent "Games are art" crowd. The same could be said for Halo games, and pretty much any easily recognized franchises. Here's the significance in that: When you enjoy art, you are polite. When you play a game, you talk trash. More than likely it's of a playful nature, rather than aggressive. It's then magnified by the confidence found in online anonymity, as morality isn't as powerful when you're actions do not effect you (and possibly when you associate games with "not real")

There is such a thing on XBL... It's called "Avoid player" or something like that...
