Now there's your problem. Call of Duty games are particularly popular with the "Man these graphics are awesome! Hey, what button skips cutscenes?" crowd as opposed to the Escapist's prominent "Games are art" crowd. The same could be said for Halo games, and pretty much any easily recognized franchises. Here's the significance in that: When you enjoy art, you are polite. When you play a game, you talk trash. More than likely it's of a playful nature, rather than aggressive. It's then magnified by the confidence found in online anonymity, as morality isn't as powerful when you're actions do not effect you (and possibly when you associate games with "not real")
High five for elitism!

When one enjoys art he or she is not necessarily polite.
It's about the mindset you go into the game with(and I didn't mean "enjoy art" in a passive sense of the phrase, I meant when you partake in it, if that's causing confusion). Art can be anything from literature and paintings to video games, music, and movies. You turn to art with the intention to be entertained, while you turn to games to make your own fun. Politeness does not disturb the gaming experience as it is presented to you, while playing around and talking trash is typically for a good laugh's sake (read: "making your own fun")

On that note, there is a divergence between the relations. At times, either group of people will make civil jokes and actively enjoy the game's conversation. This is where competitive personalities come into play. As both types of gamers can have enjoyable conversations, both types of gamers can begin to trash talk if they value winning enough. Wanting to win often clouds judgement, as it's normally either your top priority, or not a priority. In the former case, psyching out the competition comes to mind before etiquette does. This doesn't necessarily discredit the relation; when art-type gamers become competitive, it is because frustration, ranking system benefits, or genuine competitive personality has shifted their view of the video game away from art; listening to music or watching movies aren't usually competitions while games are, in some way, always competitions.

It's like griefing without being an ass-hat. There's nothing they can do to complain about what you say to them. "That guy filled my head with useless trivia, Mr. Admin. Please ban him" sounds utterly idiotic. Reading off the questions and answers from an actual Trivial Pursuit card would be a pretty good way to go.

Really though, I just ignore smack talk online because it tends to be utterly mindless and boring. I only really talk smack when I'm playing a game with my buddies via LAN or local multiplayer (if we're playing a console) and then it's just to aggravate them into making a mistake because I know how to press their buttons.

EDIT: In case you're curious, Mike Mangini recorded 1247 snare drum BPM.

YOu have to understand, online gaming is different from most other forms of gaming. When you're playing with friends, you all know each other: any trash talk is all in fun and you all have a good time playing. If you play with people who are actually professional about it and love the competition and sport of the game, then most people tend to have respect, sportsmanship, and an at least decent sense of teamwork.

But online play allows for anyone and everyone to play together. Meaning that all the immature douchebags with serious issues, God complexes, and vulgarity disorders play in the same place that the serious players do. It's unfortunate, and there's not much that can be done to stop it.

But I think the game that's come closest is Halo 3, with it's MLG playlists. It has the rules of the Major League Gaming, so pros are attracted to it and noobs stay away. It's very nice, actually: now to add a similar mode to Gears of War 2, where melee does much less damage and chainsaw kills aren't worth as much as real kills...

Your three basic choices when dealing with a rough spot are:
- Change it.
- Love it.
- Leave it.
First is pretty much impossible in this case, second obviously doesn't apply... so do the smart thing (like I did) and say no to online gaming.
Nah, I love it when people talk trash to me. For example, I like making use of the fact that a lot of 13-year-olds on XBL are both very homophobic and not quite as good as me at my preferred games; though I'm not really gay, I'm certainly willing to claim to be so if it will unsettle the asshole on the other end of the mic... which also sets me up to give a fun lecture after I kick their asses about how homophobia is improper.
Hmm, that does sound fun. In fact, you're like Dr. Phil: the kickass version. xD

It's most likely a sociological thing, for instance they can talk trash on the internet because they know the people more than likely will never meet them and they are most likely treated like crap during a regular day. So they decide that this is the way to act to other people etc. as they feel they can't get hurt by the person they are "talking trash" to.

It's easier to be a repetitive dick than it is to start and maintain a friendly conversation. You have to understand that most of the dicks you bump into online are social retards. Even if they wanted to be decent in front of their douchebag friends, they wouldn't know how.

Just find yourself a group of people who don't act like assholes and stick with them. You're going to bump into dicks. Mute them or kick their asses and bask in the glory that is beating the shit out of shit talkers. When you run into another group of decent players like yourselves, stick with it for as long as you can and click their "preferred player" button. Everyone likes getting their preferred player button pressed.

It's mainly because they think nobody can do anything about it. Face to face, 99% of the people jerks would never be so rude, for fear of getting their face punched in.

Under normal circumstances, I'm nice and polite and game for fun w/o trash talk. But some a-hole ruins my good mood and turns me into a Dickasaurus Rex.

Try this simple sentence:
"Keep talking, you're giving me an erection."

Silence.
Remember, dicks online are actually frightened of homosexuals, pedophiles, and necrophiliacs, so pretending to belong to those communities works wonders.

I never run into this problem because I use third party voice communication software if I'm talking online, thus only the people I actually want to talk to are listening/speaking. No random assholes to ruin your night.
