Honsetly, gaming these days are missing the point. Many of you will say, 'We are moving on, so therefore gaming must be more advanced.'Saying that we need compelling stories, better graphics, and amazing voice actors.Well you know what?I stand for people who could give a care less about all that nonsense. And don't consider yourself's one of those people.Out of the short time i've been on The Escapist, the people i've talked to have not been so smart on things.I understand this is only my opinion, but I would've imagined at least one idealist, one person to agree with me.But instead I get people who constantly bow before the arsty bullcrap like Grim Fandango, No More Heroes , etc.Look, im glad people think half Life 2 was a good game, but it was a moderate shooter, with basic story telling, and a pretty physics engine.Go ahead.patronize me i've got nothing to lose.

Good games are good games, regardless of their 'artsyness'.

Also, the space bar is your friend. Hint: there is one after a full stop.

Uhm, nice rant? I'll share my opinion I guess...

I look for mainly two things within a game:
1) Fun gameplay.
2) A good story.

Number 1 is a must, I can't be playing a game and consider it good at all if the gameplay itself sucks. If I'm playing a game I want to have fun, not be pissed about not making a jump for the 18th time because of a bad control scheme, horrible controls, or because the ledge doesn't stick out enough.

The second is what bridges the gap between a good game and a great game. If I play a game that's both fun and tells a terrific, enticing story then I'm in gamer heaven. I loved Half Life 2 because the story telling was terrific, especially by the end of Episode 2. It may be a mediocre shooter but it's a fun shooter and I enjoyed it, so the storytelling on top of that is what makes it great.

Graphics are secondary to all of that; as long as they aren't so horrible they burn my eyes, I'll be good with it.

That's my two cents.

Ha ha, it's funny because it's true.

Seriously though I do agree with pyrosaw on some levels. For one, to keep living on nostalgia is to not move forward. For example, as he stated, by today's example, half-life2 might have been a great game at the time but is now shit compared to some other games. On a personal note, you're setting yourself up for disaster if you cave to fan craving and try to create the perfect game with perfect story, perfect graphics, and perfect everything else, (especially if you try to do is within your allotted time) because there is no such thing as perfect. Granted some people will see it as perfect, and these are the same people who still proclaim the games greatness years later. As for everyone else, no matter how great a game is there will always be people saying something is wrong with it, either because it's their personal taste (Grim Fandango) or our of spite (Modern Warfare). As much as I hate to say it, especially after this company whored themselves, more companies should strive to be like blizzard, and set that standard of excellence, to only release a game when they damn well feel it to be at its best. To look by example at all their games, most of them have been viewed positively, with thriving online communities even to this date, which is entirely because when they make a game, they make it right.

P.S.: Fighting pyrosaw, every game should have great voice actors, it's part of the goddamn experience, and voice acting can ruin the experience, as I'm sure anyone who reads this post can think of at least one game (infinite undiscovery lol) that had terrible voice acting that ruined the whole experience for them.

Wait...No More Heroes was artsy? I thought it was just fun and kind of quirky.
Hell, it wins points for the whole 8-bit graphics and sound references. Really funny and quirky.

You just dissed Grim Fandango AND No More Heroes, two of the most ideal examples of what games should be.

What DO you want exactly?

Gameplay and Story go hand in hand for me, if one side lacks a little and the other side delivers exponentially you still have a great, compelling game.

'Thinking' makes the lesser people's brains hurt for some reason. We shall stay here on our pedestals and laugh at them.

I don't want anything, I'm here to make a statement about gaming, The Escapist, and current day everything. And actually,I do prefer fun. That's what gaming was intended to be.

well, I can agree with you on HL2 being over hyped and the fact that games don't have to be artsy, but I could not get over the fact that you never spaced the first word after the end of a sentence, so I can't tell if you're trolling or you actually mean what you said.

My question was genuine, since I've been working on several games myself. Since the two mediums are related I often compare video games to board games, where one would ask themselves if they're playing chess because the pawns are made of marble or spending hours on Monopoly for the shiny metal hat. It's a bit of a philosophical wondering but it hits the mark.

For God's sake, i never said the games were bad, i just wish people would stop bowing down to things that are only okay.

I don't quite understand the point at which you stand. You claim you don't value story, graphics, and voice actors. The only thing left would be gameplay. Also, you are condemning Grim Fandango and No More Heroes even though by today's standards they fit the criteria you are looking for.
Please reply to better express your point.

Sorry, I now know you are on probation.
