what makes it so great?

characters
plot
story
graphics
innovation
creativity
beauty
timelessness
gameplay
flow

basically - anything great that could be said about a game is DEFINED by FF7.

Heh, thankfully the wall of text that passed for my last post didn't put people off the thread altogether... :)

It's interesting to see what other peoples' stand out moments of FFVII are. For me, it was coming out of Midgar for the first time. I'd been running round the city for a long time now, and it felt like so much had happened there that I sort of got it into my head that's where the whole game was based. Then came this huge escape from Shinra HQ on a motorbike (you do not want to know how badly Cloud's insurance went up after that little jaunt) and suddenly I was outside and the entire world opened up to me and I realised just how immense it was. I think my brain might have melted a little at that point.

I also remember the excitement of trying to find out WTF was going on. That's another thing that worked well for me, was the way the game threw you right in the thick of tha bombing mission, and you were loaded up with what turned out to be false misconceptions about who you were and why you were there. Watching Cloud's mind unravel came as much of a shock to me as it did to him, I reckon. :) And realising that Tifa knows some things he doesn't but is holding back... Yeah, it was all too easy for me to get sucked into that plot.

The game also served as a source of frustration when I unlocked Vincent. Mainly because here was this guy who was right there at the start of the Jenova Project, working for the enemy and is, in this fangirls' opinion, seriously hot, and there was almost nothing there about him. Apart from the aforementioned "Lucrecia!" of course. ;) I wanted more!

Oh, and the steampunk style setting was really cool.

It was the first one on the playstation, so the newest generation(at the time) played it first.

Having played four, five, and six before seven i found the game quite underwhelming. As well now that cloud is a sad emo kid, no longer the sarcastic jackass, what charm was left in the series has pretty much melted away for me.

It's loved because it's actually a decent game. It had its flaws of course, but there weren't many console RPGs at the time that were like VII.

FF6 was my favorite.
FF7 adding NOTHING new except a 3D engine and a variety to magic and whatnot.
7 did to add new stuff

whiny emo protagonists, not like Cecil at his worst ether :p
and featured a moms boy for a villain, who got no personality dose very little 'evil' out side screwing with cloud and killing a girl that, by all rights, had no real chance against him anyway, but he stands around looking cool >.> so we have fanboys now to

-.- thank you FF7

*goes back to playing FF6*
Oh god I hope you're just a terrible troll.
:p ment to reply sooner but site was having issues that day and i forgot, then Space Marine came out and was busy

no, not trolling, its my OPINION, it be trolling if i said it to start shit.
it was said in jest to be sure, I'm rather sarcastic in person, but its also how i feel about the game, 7 is GOOD, not great, just good.

Oh, look. It's this thread again.

In case you haven't noticed, the entire internet shares your opinion. Final Fantasy VII, just like World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, Halo, and others, is almost universally looked down upon because of the claim that it is "overrated" and therefore worthless. The internet is made of people who want to stand out, so any time something becomes popular, everybody turns against it because they think it makes them look edgy and anti-establishment. It doesn't. All that's happened is that Final Fantasy VI has gained the worst fanbase imaginable. I can't remember any instance of someone pitching Final Fantasy VI to me without taking a dump all over Final Fantasy VII in the process. You are not a beautiful flower of individualism because you love Kefka Palazzo(who is the exact same character as DC Comics' Joker) and loathe Sephiroth. Nobody likes Sephiroth.

...I think he's alright, actually. Final Fantasy VII in general is perfectly serviceable. Time has not been kind to it, but the ground that it broke is something that merits respect.

Barrett taking Cloud on a "date" at the Gold Saucer. After this, humor in FF games went downhill.
