first off i have never seen firefly but i see it mentioned constantly in forums. basically i have to ask why is it so popular? the only thing i know about the show is that it got canceled off of tv and they made a movie. is it a storyline thing or is it a character thing why is it such a huge deal to people?

Because it was pretty good, but didn't have enough mainstream appeal so it got cancelled.

There are a number of reasons for its popularity, most of which it shares with any number of other Joss Whedon projects, but I think a lot of it has to do with the ensemble cast. The characters are all well-realized and well -acted, and there are enough of them that most people who watch the show won't take long to identify pretty strongly with their favorite.

I'd say give it a shot if you don't hate sci-fi; it's entertaining, and only ran 14 episodes (if you count the double-length pilot as two).

It's more a character thing and a universe-building thing than a story thing. The show was awesome mostly because of the setting. The characters were great too.

It was incredibly well realised. Good characters, setting etc. I love the show, but the plot of some episodes was almost unimportant compared to just watching the characters be hilarious or badass or both.
Also, what can I say, I seem to love Joss Whedon's work. I couldn't give you specifics, he just gets it right somehow for me.

It was well written with good characters and an interesting setting. Joss Whedon knows how to make series.
