I just do not understand from a perspective of the media sex and homosexuality is this massive dirty thing that you can never talk about with an serious debate unless it is inherently negative in some way. It almost make me feel detached from reality in a way due to it being so absurdly blown out of proportion. It likely world if it was not for people in my day to day life that like I do honestly do not care about other people's sex lives.

I suppose my questions are why the discrepancy and why is it considered dirty or even deviant or shameful?

This topic might be better suited for the politics/religion forum. But anyway:

I would like to point out that of the western countries I know, it's mostly America that's so incredibly prude and homophobic. Here in the Netherlands at least we're pretty open about sex, and homosexuality is mostly accepted. (You always have bigots in every society) I personally wouldn't know why America turned into such a prude and homophobic country, I would like to know too.

No idea. I saw a thread on some other forum about how there was a gay sex scene the in game of thrones show. They were all going crazy, because that wasn't in the book. Then I pointed out that there are a lot more sex scenes in general in the show, at which point I was ignored.

They may have just been mad at how blatant Renly/Loras was in the show, whereas in the books it's inferred by the reader and some characters rather than straight-up announced.

Well if that's the case they never said that :p They were just yelling about how there's a sex scene, not that it took away the implication. They never once talked about all the other scenes that weren't in the book, like littlefingers brothel.

Well I suppose homosexuality is still something new to people and those people will find it odd, scary, disgusting, or whatever crazy reaction they have, and make such a huge deal about it. When it comes to sex well all I can think of that people make a big deal of, is when it threatens their kids and fear it will influence them to be some crazy sexual deviant.

I imagine that men kissing isn't that appeal to a majority of the people who are watching it.

Somebody, somewhere might be having more fun than me, and that simply will not do.

No, really, it's the most sensible answer I can come up with, excepting people are just using it as an excuse for a fight and more or less anything would do.

I remember thinking it was pretty cleverly buried in the subtext too, but upon subsequent readings knowing what was it up it really is painfully obvious.

I don't really know anybody who hates gay people but I live in Canada I mean gay marriage became legal here years ago and has really stopped being a issue since. Hell every year in Toronto there is a gay pride parade that gets more and more popular with everyone gay or not every year.

From what I have gathered the issue is mostly a thing in the US and is mostly just a religious extremist thing there at least as far as the west is concerned.

Because we are one confusing ass society.

On one hand we understand that sex is a very personal private thing, but on the other hand we have this bizarre, perverse interest in knowing what people stick their stuff into or what they stick into their stuff.

The notion of homosexuality being "deviant", as well as the general prudishness many people exhibit towards sex, has very firm groundings in history. Naturally, this varies from place to place, and many countries (mostly in Europe) have adopted far more liberal attitudes towards sex and homosexuality over the past few decades.

Having said that, the aforementioned liberal attitude is a very new mindset which really only began to emerge in the latter half of the 20th century. Unsurprisingly, approximately 60 years has not been enough to erase hundred-year old prejudices regarding sex, and specifically homosexuality.

As far as homosexuality goes, we humans love conformity. Hell, we used to beat people for using a different hand to do things, what chance did/do homosexuals have?

Because god said "Thou must not be gay" and therefor it's a sin and shouldn't be done
I honestly don't know, there are many reasons people are for/against homosexuality and therefore massive debates occur

For the majority of the course of human evolution, like any social animal, our ancestors would've lived in circumstances wherein the sexual relationships of others would have had profound effects on the social hierarchy of which they were a part. Add to that the very real compulsion for organisms to pass on their genes to the next generation before their time is up and you have a recipe for some very socially obtrusive hairless apes.

So far as I know, its not over here in Australia. I haven't met a single person who counts it as that big a deal. I've seen shows on a 8:30pm dealing with the photoshopping of pornography for a more standardised look in magazines, and unless you're around little kids no-one really gives two hoots whether you say so or not.

And Homosexuality? That seems to be more of an adult or even older taboo than anything else really. I know one or two adults against it, about 5 elderly people against it, but not a single younger person I know really gives two sh**s.

It's not to me either, but it's the fact that they were complaining about it not sticking to the book as a shield for homophobia. If they really believed that, they would have been complaining about all the other added sex scenes and deviations from the book.
