Why in movies and tv shows no one cares if they kill innocent people?

Ok so there is a good guy with loads of guns and there is an evil guy running a company and the building is protected by security guards. Why is it ok for the good guy to shoot these seemingly innocent security guards. They probably are working to support their wife and kids and most likely have nothing to do with the bad guys evil plans.

Is it just collateral damage, they are need to die for the greater good?

Or am i just thinking too much?

The scene in whichever Matrix film it is, with the big car chase up the motorway, annoyed me for this reason.

The simple answer is: "Because they're doing it."

Yeah the good guys don't think about the security guards family and friends, as seen in Austin Powers. Security guards and buildings that gets killed and blown up, are just collateral damage without further meaning than death and destruction. After my mind.

Well I'm sure the argument will generally come down to motive. The 'Good Guys' kill to protect themselves and others while the 'Bad Guys' kill to further their own aims.

For me the more...annoying moral assumption is why is the 'Good Guy' seen as merciful when he lets the 'Big Bad' live at the end (which seems to happen all the f'ing time). The 'Good Guy' just spend half the movie/show/book/game casually killing dozens of guys many of which we're little more than the villain equivalent of blue collar workers. They don't call the shots, they don't matter to the 'master plan', hell most of them are probably just trying to make enough to get by with the only skill set they have. But then the 'Good Guy' gets to the 'Big Bad' and arrests him, pretty much guaranteeing that he'll be able to do more evil in the future. It just drives me nuts.

A great evil for a greater good. Presumably, not killing those inconvenient innocents would result in more deaths in the end.

It is the same reason why the "proper balance between good and evil" means the good guys win while evil rots in jail.

I don't know what that reason is, but I know that the reasons are the same thing.

I think this might clear it up. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6lzEhoXads&feature=player_embedded] It's actually very related to the topic.

I have been thinking about this also. Some scenes from films annoy me like in the first matrix where they kill the security guards at the end. I did not like the scene as much because of it. Why didn't they just sneak past them? You know, go in through a window? Ah well I just get annoyed at those heroes killing my henchmen. I have to pay for those guys.

makes sense.

so the security guards shouldnt have been working for the big bad guy to begin with.

in some scenes or shows they only do non fatal shots, why dont they always do that.

Well, in defense of the Matrix which has come up a couple of times now. Remember that Agents can become any person who is connected to the Matrix in a matter of moments. The only way to be sure you're not going to be facing some super ninja is to kill EVERYONE who might be able to get in your way. The logic behind this for the characters is clearly a 'needs of the many' argument since they believe they are working to save the entire human race.

I really cant think of anything to add to that....says it all really.

N.B.
All henchmen employed by EvilErimne's Diabolically Evil Empire Inc. Are covered for accidental death by hero/heroin.

Because they are the "good guys". It's only wrong when someone else does it.

Also, the good guys in those movies win, and kill the bad guys. Who do you think gets to tell their side of the story? Who is going to question the good guys, who have big guns and kill lots of people without caring about it?

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, or at least that's as close as I can think of.
