Why is it that everyone thinks that the vocal minority of Xbox live users and CoD players are...

I'm always weirded out by these threads. Why? Because it implies that you don't have everyone muted. Who the hell plays COD with the voice chat on?
The sort of person that talks shit on the mic. I love playing games with voice chat on because the stuff people talk about amuses me greatly.
Ok, fine. But does anybody have it on apart from those two reasons? I for one have never played, nor seen someone play a game of COD with the voice chat on.
I don't think anyone would have it on except for those two. Although some people might not know that you could turn it off. Which is completely reasonable.

Nothing can compare to the pure hatred produced by one annoying child.
Worst one I've ever seen was a kid who sounded like they were 10 yelling "I will perform fellatio!" into his mic for over a minute straight (only broken up by the short breaks he would take before starting again). Wasn't a recording either, he began to call out other players once people threatened to mute him, this went on for roughly 10 minutes before he was booted.
20 childish adults are still more preferable than one childish child.

Because those little shits are the ones that stick out most vividly in our memories, so we automatically generalize based on the memory of them.
This. Plus I'm sure you'd find that the majority are actually kids in late elementary through high school. Also its worth noting that guys go through puberty around this time. Shit people started mistaking me for my dad on the phone when I was 14.

That makes sense. Those poor people, though.

Mmmhmm. I used to one of them, only in Reach though.

It's just generalising dude. Also I reckon they're the vast majority rather than a small and vocal one, but nevertheless Xbox Live isn't completely filled with people like that, or little 12 year old kids.
I very much agree.
I think that most of the "preteens" described that aren't as annoying as described have their mics out because they (or we, being me) don't want to deal with such an annoying person.

They're not all bad. Just the ones you hear.

Well in my experience with Halo 3 and Reach, it's because most of the ones with mics are either 12 year olds with high pitched voices, or nasally 14-15 year olds bragging about their skill 'til they get slaughtered. Then they sound like the 12 year olds.

I think part of it is the way they choose to behave on the mic and the other part is the gamertags they choose to represent themselves.

seriously, even if everyone was nice and polite...the amount of noise/feedback from shitty mics is enough to drive anyone insane.

If you're witty and have a sharp tongue and a microphone, you can get the man-children to shut the hell up by beating them at their own game.

I remember having this exchange with some boastful and loud one (I think his name was madcow.. I don't remember) in front of my 13-year old cousin when playing Halo: Reach.

He decided he'd want to have some verbal trash-talk confrontation with me, since I'm... there? I don't know for sure.

I forget the entirety of the exchange, but I do remember rhetorically asking him: "So who's your girlfriend? Your left hand or your right hand?"

He was silent the entire game, and left the end-game lobby as soon as the game ended.

I have yet to encounter people looking to start verbal fights with total strangers on PSN ever, but on Halo and CoD, it is practically a rite-of-passage to have an encounter with at least one.

Also, I'm not the kind of guy who values the merit of males based on their ability to attract mates, since that is such a very shallow and primitive means of measuring a man's worth, yet every attack singles and "virgins" all the time, it's friggin' hilarious to see them still acting like it matters.

All I say is thank god for the Mute option.

My policy on Xbox Live now is if you're a dickhead for no reason (no matter how small) or an arrogant loudmouth you just get muted pretty much straight away.

Works perfectly.

I do it for, ya know, tactical reasons. People can tell you when they're in trouble, or help you out when you are. It's quite useful.

The kids that sing annoy me. Why sing? Why the hell sing? Or thr ones where you can hear some shit dance or rap music in the background constantly.

But most trash talkers I ran into on xbl were kids, the rest were older players..........with the mindset of a 12 year old.

You're obviously playing a game other than COD, then.
