Why is it that gamers can play games like Kirby without being considered childish?

Kirby, Little Big Planet, Mario...

All lighthearted, happy games, filled with rainbows and brightly-colored collectables.
If in any other form of media, they would be considered childish. (TV shows, 'n such not withstanding. They got changed far from the original source) And yet, I see people as excited about them as they are games with grizzled space marines and ancient Greek threesomes.
On rare occasion, people are called childish for liking happy games, so I ask this:
Are adults allowed to like these games because society has come to a general consensus that they are legitimate, mature media?
Or is it because the individuals who play them are secure with themselves?
(Read the sentences above. I am not dissing these games, I am asking why the stigma of immaturity isn't applied to them in Western culture)
You've never watched Narutaru... I think you don't want to either (not what you think, absolutely NO reason it should've been shown on a childrens channel even at 2am)

Playing a game like Little Big Planet is refreshing after a stretch when all I play is one gritty violent shooter after another. It's a nice change of pace to control a little sack person solving puzzles in a mostly 2D plane of existence rather than controlling a gritty well armored soldier protagonist killing mutants in a wasteland. Not that there's anything wrong with the latter example, but we all like variety.

I guess you could say I'm really a child at heart [http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/446194]... heheheh.

I'd lilke to play Little Big Planet. I must admit now; I haven't done a lot of those "would-be" childish games, but those that I've done I've liked. They're just good. I dunno, I suppose gamers are a more open-minded species than the rest of the media outlets...
On second thought, retract that last statement...

But consider the messages/story/plot/discussion in games like these, I suppose. That would be ALL that other, more passive media types would have. I'd say gameplay is more important to say, Mario, than any tales of Peach getting kidnapped blah-di-blah-di-blah, wouldn't you?

He can shallow just about anyone he crosses. Whats not to like? I say there is nothing wrong with "kid" games. The same game tone or mood or atmosphere over an over again gets old fast. Nothing like a game of Mario or Kirby to end an all nighter of <insert M-rated shooter>.

Kirby devours every single creature he comes into contact with... Gears of war at least have the mercy to give a fast death, this is slow and painful death by digestion... The pink color is also only a disguise, like the cute creature from Men in Black that lures in people with it's cuteness and then tears people to shreds...

Not only that, but he wears their carcasses as disguises and uses their abilities to blend in, as to stalk his next victim. DOES THIS CREEP OUT NO-ONE ELSE?

I suppose many people consider any kind of video game childish, regardless of whether it's cute or full of zombies, soldiers and gore.

You show me an organism that can end the very existence of another organism by instantaneously swallowing it without a second thought (and smiling no less) and I'll show you something that is in no way '4 kids'.

But then again we do have a pretty twisted view of what is kid friendly.

"Hey kids want to make little animals beat each other unconscious?"
"Hey kids want to have an italian light sentient mushrooms on fire?"
"Hey kids want to watch little yarn guys re-enact the worst attack on american soil?"
"OMG Kids! Why aren't you playing a little pink guy that ends the lives of thousands of creatures per level."

(The above is in jest of course...I don't really think these things are terrible I just think that they aren't exactly innocent :p).

It's like loony toons, I still laugh when a 20 ton anvil crushes the skull of the coyote, yet I do think considering that children's entertainment is a little hypocritical when your ranting about the violent level of games (even back when the shows were still on I don't think they are anymore :((((((((((((((((().

I like Kirby and stuff. I don't really care if it is childish or not. I just like them either way (just like I still love Wallace and Gromit!).
If anyone insults wallace and gromit I will wait in the darkness and the moment their first born child breaths its first breath I will drop in shinobi style and it'll all be over.

Wallace and Gromit should be a required entertainment for all living beings :p. The fact that arson destroyed all their little figurines was a world tragedy.

Cheese Gromit! Cheese!

I think there is still the perception that playing happy and cute games like kirby is a childish past time.

With the Nintendo Wii it's broken some of these barriers but there's still the stigma of childishness about it.

I'm not an advocate that it isn't childish at all (if you watch the smash bros brawl advert where the guy says "go on Mario!" then you'll know what I mean) but really people are becoming less self-conscious about whether it's deemed childish or not and nobody's against people having simple fun so it looks like it's going to become even more common.

I think it's a question of quality. You brought up games like Kirby, Pokemon, and Mario that are considered by the vast majority of gamers to be great games. If you brought up games like 'Bratz letz rapez Englizh' then there would be a lot of people agreeing that those games are childish. You see this in other forms of media as well. You can watch Wall-E, or Animaniacs, or read Harry Potter without much stigma because they are perceived as being good enough to hold an adult's attention. A form of media can only be criticized for being childish if it can ONLY appeal to children.

Bratz have been pwned by Matel last I knew.

Which shouldn't matter...YOU HAD TO DISMEMBER THE DOLLS TO PUT NEW CLOTHES ON THEM!

Women are crazy already lets not show the little ones that by cutting off mommies head you can fit that wedding dress on her easier.

Some people believe all gamers to be childish, regardless of what game it is.

I have no problem with childish, cute or name them "innocent" games like Kirby, Bubble Bobble (Bust-A-Move), Animal Crossing, Pokemon or Chocobo. Really like most of them.

But you might get some strange faces if you mention you are playing some of these...
