Is it because they're usually easy to kill and there are plenty of them? Is it because you feel that you're getting ridding the digital world of some very ugly faces?

Probably because it appeals somewhat to the idea of "fighting for survival" as much as any survival horror does. Or because it's killing things of human-like intelligence and appearance that isn't human (just like, say androids).

They are the universes 'free kill' patsies. Think, is there anything else that is so hated that you can kill them without feeling bad? Sure, Nazis were evil, but alot of the Germans during World War 2 were just going with the flow of their overlord. Vampires are fun to kill, but are in that grey area of morality at times. Russians have worn out their 'welcome', and the Arabs are going the same way. Nothing more is satisfying then killing a zombie simply because the they have no morals and are easy to hate. Not to mention there is a chance you crappy boss is among the Horde.

Proving your power over another person is gratifying. Killing someone is the ultimate method of overpowering someone, but causes significant adverse effects.

Zombies, on the other hand, are just people that you're entirely justified in killing, giving you the psychological sense of power without the sense of guilt or negative repercussions.

...actually, I would like to see a game where Zombies aren't inhuman monsters. Have them re-characterized as just 'different'. Well, there's always Stubbs I guess...

More so, you're actually doing them a favor by killing them. Not just guilt free, you could see it as morally correct. It's a win-win for everyone.

I don't know, I always enjoy using a shotgun to blow off a zombie's face. It's just...so...satisfying.

yeah, a lot of earlier games relied on aliens or robots as the enemies since you aren't actually killing a human being.

Think of all the backlash MW2 got for the airport level.

Since a zombie isn't human (technically) you don't have to feel bad about blowing their heads off with a shotgun.

also: zombies are fun to kill! they are always fun to kill.

For me, there's the reason for indulging my psychotic side. A game where you run into a shopping centre and massacre thousands of people with a chainsaw just would not happen, but a game where you run into a shopping centre and massacre thousands of ZOMBIES with a chainsaw is perfectly okay. Because zombies have all the physical analogues of humans, obviously, but have had their personality and humanity removed, they can be butchered without moral deilema. As an aside, I think this is why games don't cause violence, but instead help act as an outlet for it.

Also, the survivalism aspect is appealing, since zombies are only a major threat en masse the only way to make them a strong antagonistic presence is to fight them in an apocalyptic scenario. The whole "last man standing" psychlogy, of being the only thing left to stem the tide, acts as sort of a moral initative for the player to enjoy the game; unless of course you're the sort of person who interacts with survivors on Dead Rising 2 just to watch them get surrounded and pulled down by shambling monstrosities.

Guilt-free murder. Murder in general would have sufficed for our primitive ancestors, but since the caveman era there's been such things as morality and ethics. So now it has to be guilt-free to be particularly satisfying.

Besides, with zombies specifically you're encouraged to 'cleanse the world' of their 'unholy filth'. So not only is it genocide - it's good genocide! What more could you ask for?

Whatever made the person who he or she was, is gone forever. Killing the animated physical remains does not liberate the soul or anything...so what exactly is the favor here? "Putting them out of their misery"? They have no conception of their own misery....no feelings/ emotions about it. In other words...it's all in your head man.

EDIT: Heh...kleine wereld he...landgenoot.

Because smashing things is fun.

And smashing things shaped like fleshy humans is even more fun.

No, I mean more like putting their remains to rest. I wouldn't want my animated body roaming around eating people's brains. I don't expect many people would. Sure, the zombie wouldn't know it, but it's the thought that counts.

Yup, het valt me op hoeveel Nederlanders hier zijn. :)

Because they are trying to eat you for absolutely no purpose and are unintelligent, shambling suits of necrotic flesh devoid of personality, morals and sense of self. They don't even have the sense of self for self-preservation, something which every living thing on this planet has otherwise. That and it looks like your old boss who screwed you over at every turn and then fired you over something pointless.

*whips out Shotgun*BANG!!!Take that Mike, you undead bastard!
