Honestly, this game only gameplay mechanic is something MMORPG fans always complain about, level grinding (or dungen grinding), please if you like Maplestory tell me why, don't tell me its the party quest because my friend tried to pull off that excuse, I know there are only four of them. Four missions cant make a game fun.
The only things fun is scamming noobs with a buddy but that loses its fun when you realize that the only you can do is sell the item or use for more grinding

I think it's because it combined my love of rpgs with my love of platformers. The platforming element makes fighting monsters more fun than the normal "click on monster till it dies" rigamarole. You actually have to time your attacks to keep the monster back; you actually need to outmaneuver the monster rather than just stand there all day attacking it.

Short answer: it's not fun. Maple Story is shit.

Long answer: it's not fun. Maple story is shit because it has the second worst MMO community (surpassed only by Runescape), has only a handful of very specific, cookie-cutter builds that you must follow to be successful with each class; is one big, fat anime-filled grindfest with absolutely no deviation...

Now, it's been at least three years since I played Maple Story. Maybe it's changed-- it would be very narrow-minded of me to assume such a popular MMO is completely stagnant...

But that's what I'm going to assume, so fuck you-- and your little dog too.

Because it's all the drivel of an MMO with none of the charm.

That said, i don't think it's crap, it's just not for me.

Maple Story was a waste of time for me. I played it for an hour straight trying to figure out what people saw in it. The graphics are charming for about the first 3 minutes but get old and annoying after a while because it's the same crap over and over again with zero variety. Gameplay is typical MMO fair, coma inducing gameplay with grinding up the wall.

It's not fun. Just my thoughts.

- the graphics are nice, I love cartoony anime 2D! (this drew me in)
- the battles are real-time, not point&click (this kept me playing)

- grinding >< (this made me lose interest)

I remember playing a while ago and see this thread thought why didn't I play it much, so tried it again. Now I remember.

The grind is stupid especally for the beginning of a mmo. Most MMo's you can get away with no feeling to much of the grind at the beginning but one this i felt it like a wet fish to the face. Another thing that turned me off was the controls, i think the platforming idea but cant it just be pressing left and jump at the same time instead of how it got me to do it? Press left hold it down for 2/3 secs, tap jump for 2 sec release both at same time. The look doesn't bother me that much, its looks like a flash game.

I played for an hour, not once did I find it fun. The only person I know that likes it is my brother, though he also likes glittery things and Runescape.

I do enjoy the look of the game, the backgrounds what whatnot. I don't like maplestory though because it's so uneven in terms of play. In their new dungeon you go from fighting Lv 25's in one room to fighting Lv 70's in the next! I was a Lv 90 archer type and I got 2 hit killed. There are so many things wrong with that. Another thing I HATE is those secret everywhere in hell teleports where you push up. You'd think at least in towns they will tell you where they are, especially in some towns it's the only way to get to the exit!

It's the epitome of nearly every MMO out there: grind yourself retarded so you can play barbie with your avatar.

I myself wanted to make an awesome looking character, but I was already beta testing ROSEONline, which is another MMO, also about grinding.

Got bored of both games after a while, because progress just went way too slow, and all you do it just kill whatever monster spawns near you with the same skills/spells over and over.

Then, a year later, I played on someone elses WoW account for 5 minutes. It was ROSE and MapleStory all over again, but with 'epic' gear that can be grinded. So basically it's Barbie, but in the end there's only one good set of clothes/armor.

I got to about level 18 before I went: "This really isn't fun at all." stopped playing it and never tried it again. That being said I hate all "em em oh ar pee geez" so it's not really maple story. Though I did have one problem in particular with it, Why the fuck is it called maple story? I have yet to see any Maple
Syrup,
Trees,
Leafs or
even a mention of any of any of these items.

Don't forget about those zifing evil worms that look harmless and easy to kill and then one-hit kill you and have seemingly unlimited health.

Oh please that's nothing, for their special holiday event they had a giant Lv 100+ cake walking around IN EACH TOWN. Making you scared of even going into town without dying, not to mention towns are suppose to be safe havens for you to go AFK or something.

I haven't tried it, so I'll reserve judgement on Maple Story's gameplay. However, it is fun for me to see that Maple Story may have been the vector for a virus infection on the International Space Station [http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7583805.stm]. Well, one of the laptops aboard it, anyway... nothing critical. (Still, NASA, c'mon... surely there's room in the budget for anti-virus software.)
