Why is MGS so popular?

Granted I'm not that into stealth games and such, and that I've only played snake eater. I just don't understand why metal gear solid is such a popular game. This isn't a thread to insult, but I'd like to know what aspects of the series make it so damn good(or popular) who knows, I might even play it.
Edit:It's pretty late >_>

First off MSG? Second, can you really not like a whole series out of one game, and finally if you don't like stealth games than you obviously won't like it. There's no reason to persuade you to play it, if you already dislike the genre.

honestly until i started patrolling forums and whatnot, i had no idea about the game basically, (not trying to brag or anything) but i know a ridiculous amount of different people from different gaming groups/areas of my city and near none of them have played MGS, as i've asked them before on their opinion of if i should've picked up the patriot one for the ps3

so the popularity might just be an online thing? or maybe certain countries/states?

but from what i've played it seems pretty..unique in its area of expertise as a game, and it has a steady fanbase from what i've seen so why not?

I think people generally are in the later MGSs for the characters or the cut scenes but I think quite alot of the time it's the box that gets people.

Ok i have the honor of having played the original mgs 1 on a playstation 1 (those ancient things that were coffee breakroom grey) It just has a strong and twisted story always. It's made like a thriller novell where the main character does not know the entire background of his mission which just makes it more exciting and compelling.

Then there's the Characters and bossfights. Lots of guns and real reward of stealth in a game compared to others. Granted one needs to play on hard for the newer games to have real effect when being spotted.

Mgs 3 is pretty good. It's just hard to quite get the story when it's really something that has happened 40 years in the past compared to the other games. You should defenatley try mgs 2 and see if you like that, nr. 4 is like no stealth(mostly just disguised and can run past ppl anyways) and just lots of cutscenes.

Unfortunately, you played the bad one.
MGS3? The bad one? I thought that was the best one!
MGS3 is the best one by far. Big Boss is probably the coolest character ever. I even cosplayed as the damn guy! haha

My personal ranking of the MGS games I've played are as follows:
1. Metal Gear Solid 3(I loved playing as Big Boss and Snake Eater is an amazing song.)
2. Metal Gear Solid(First game I played on the Playstation and it brings back fond memories.)
3. Metal Gear Solid 4(Revisiting Shadow Moses with PS3 graphics was amazing.)
4. Metal Gear Solid 2

With that said, I loved all of the MGS games because I grew up on them, I actually enjoyed the story, and I can't think of anything more entertaining than running around in a box while trying to stop your twin brother.

Probably because it was one of the first game to introduce the concept of Stealth in a time where everyone and their pet had a Playstation. It also delivered a cinematic experience that few games had at the time. Additionally, the boss fight against Psycho Mantis was unique as well, a boss that actually 'read' the content of your memory card, weird and awesome at the same time.

And like many others sad, MGS 3 was definitely the best one, although I didn't mind playing as Raiden in MGS 2, or enjoying the fun VR missions of the first one.

I like it because of all the small details in the game.
A great example is in MGS3 and your locked in the cell and there are so many ways to get out, instead of one linear pathway.
Also its very popular in Japan and the soundtracks are very well put together.

MGS is what made me interested in weapons, and knowing about weapons makes MGS better.

MGS3 is easily the best. It easily has the best codec calls. Para-Medic and Sigint are my favorite 2 support characters.
Look up some of the conversations on youtube, you will be amused. Here is a good one:

i will be the first to admit that the MGS series isnt actually that fun (other that the boss battles, which are always fun). but i still absolutely love the series.

reasons:
1)very likeable characters blended together into a batshit insane plot with totally kickass cutscenes that are also usually batshit insane and sometimes fourth wall breaking. most of the evil characters are incredibly unique and badass.
2)kojima's twisted sense of humor. some of it dark as hell and i love it.
3)some of the random gameplay curveballs they throw at you in the middle of the game are unexpected and awesome. example: the torture sequence from MGS1
4)the sheer amount of hidden content stuck in the game. you have to look around, do random actions, and call random people at random times to find them all. an average player probably sees about 70% of the games' contents on their first playthrough
5)they all look very pretty for their time

and yes, MGS3 is by far the best one. a few steps down, MGS4 is pretty good too.

I'm curious if there are any MGS fans who didn't start on MGS for the PlayStation. There are some gameplay isues that I found with MGS3 Subsistence (despite it being the most developed) that had me thinking it was quite primitive. Maybe it's a series that just doesn't age well.

I think it was one of the first games to give you choices in this genre, like you get a boat load of guns but are rewarded for not using them. With the prison scene there are a few ways to get out, one of which being to use tomato ketchup to look like blood to get the guard to come in.

I think it was the first game to let you snap on to a wall and take peak round the corner.

The plot is much better than your average "something wants to take over the world and it must be stopped", mainly 'cos they already have taken over the world ...

The characters are freaking awesome, boss letting herself be branded a traitor and hated by the country she loved, that she died for.

It (at times) doesn't take it's elf too seriously, either by codec messages or being able to kiss a poster, being able to lay on your back on a bed and stir at a poster of a Japanese model that refills your psych gauge, to Johnny having the shits all the time and hiding in a box to sneak around.

There is also lots of hidden extras, like in the first one if you crawl through a shaft a number of times you can see a girl doing exercises in her underwear (she starts them off dressed).

The games are always REALLY hard, on easy there an absolute cake walk but on the hardest setting on MGS4 they can smell you ...

I love MGS. The plot, extremely likeable characters and the intensity of the stealth is just fun. I never grow tired of playing them. (I have all 4)

I played the first that was pretty good.
but in the sequel the japaneese smell took it over.
